In the heart of the French Broad River Gorge, Myra's Cottage is tucked in a mountain cove we call Owl Holler and borders Pisgah National Forest. Located near historic Stackhouse and just a mile above a main whitewater access point for the French Broad River, Myra’s Cottage offers serene comfort for retreat, recreation and renewal. Resting in a meadow surrounded by forested ridges and two creeks, the cottage provides privacy in a beautiful mountain setting. The cottage has access to many trails that are located on the surrounding 100 acre property including a mile hike to the knoll for exceptional views of Bluff Mountain.
The modern cottage includes two bedrooms (queen & double), fully equipped kitchen, dining nook, living room with sleeper sofa, bathroom with tub/shower, carport and a large screened porch that overlooks Barney’s Branch. Washer/dryer, dishwasher, ceiling fans, wood stove, window air conditioner, central heat, wireless internet, TV with DVD/VHS player and video library, and all necessary linens ensure convenience and comfort. The Ping Pong table on the porch challenges you to relive your summer camp days or offers an opportunity to learn a new sport.

Myra's offers you the opportunity to "unplug". Cell phones don't work here. You can truly relax from the constant interruption of the usual total media immersion. Of course, you can drive down to the river or up to the highway to get reception if needed. And there is a local land line phone for emergencies.
The back to the land movement was the genesis of Myra’s Cottage. Ginny and Danny bought Owl Holler from Gilbert and Nita Stackhouse in 1978. Gilbert was the grandson of Amos Stackhouse who moved to Madison County after visiting Warm Springs (now Hot Springs) and falling in love with the mountains. Aiming to live simply, we embraced the mountain culture that honors the land. We learned to fix it, make do, or do without. We harvested Hemlock trees from our land and built our house. We planted trees and birthed a son. We developed organic, sustainable gardens. We continue to garden extensively and enjoy sharing vegetables, berries & flowers with our guests.
Danny Wyatt purchased this cottage in 1978
Danny’s mother, Myra, joined us in 1986. She had become a Canadian after a three day romance with Louis Hildebrandt, her second marriage, and they lived near Calgary until his unexpected death. Danny built her a house down the holler where she lived until 2009. Myra was an amazing woman and we honor her memory by sharing her cottage with you.
Wonderful solitude in the midst of Mother Nature. Secluded yet within 12 minutes of Hot Springs or Marshall. Great one mile hikes to either the French Broad River or the knoll with spectacular views of Bluff Mountain and the Spring Creek watershed.
An amazing private cottage in the middle of the forest with the perfect host who had a fire going when he greeted us at the late hour we arrived. Beautiful forest, creek and waterfalls at our fingertips. Would definitely recommend a weekend in the great outdoors here.
we enjoyed our stay immensely! Hope to go back soon!
Beautiful land with gently flowing creek. Wonderful owners attentive and accommodating.
A great "home for the holidays"...my sisters' family of 4 really enjoyed the space, especially with how well stocked the kitchen was for use in preparing Thanksgiving dishes to share. We will definitely rent again for guests to stay close by to us here in Marshall...Thanks Danny!!!
We LOVED Myra's cottage! It was the perfect get away for our family of six. Ping pong table was a hit! Be prepared to make your meals as there are not too many options close by. We planned on making our meals anyway, but the cottage is stocked with essential food items, which was a great help. Our host was so gracious and provided us with fresh veggies and fruit from the garden. Hiking trails are nearby including some on the property. It's true there really is no cell reception, and wifi is not for streaming movies. But it really was no big deal!! Cottage has lots of DVDs for adults and teens. Thank you Mr. Danny for sharing your valley with us!
The Graber Family
Danny was a wonderful host, providing fresh vegetables from the garden, and answering all of our questions. The cottage is fully equipped and feels just like home, but better. The surroundings, both on the adjacent property and the background of the mountains, river and small mountain towns also helped to make our stay very enjoyable. I only wish that may wife and I could have stayed a week instead of only 2 days.
Myra's Cottage was a perfect place for my sister and I to stay for our annual hiking vacation. There are many hikes to choose from close to the cottage, including some options on the Appalachian Trail. The cottage is very clean, the kitchen was well-stocked, beds comfortable, lots of movies to choose from after a long day of hiking. Danny and Ginny were very helpful and accommodating. The property is very special, with two short walks on the property - one up to a bluff with a view and the other to a beautiful waterfalls. The cottage is very clean, and the large screen porch a great place to relax. We hope to be back there.
Near historic Marshall, where you can explore the local shops downtown, including a coffee shop, artist studios, and local craft shops. Also near the town of Hot Springs, which was voted the "Best Mountain Town" in 2013 by Outdoor Magazine. Hot Springs has multiple restaurants, outdoor outfitters, numerous festivals, and a spa.
