Beautiful condo but the heat made it difficult to enjoy.
The condo is ideally situated, with beautiful views of the ocean. However, there is absolutely no cross breeze in this unit in the main living space, and it was sweltering. The master bedroom was the coolest area and we ended up spending most of our time there. We had all ceiling fans running and 2 free standing fans on full all of the time, and we were still too hot. Our 5 month old was sweaty at night in just a onsie. We have been to Hawaii 5 times and never have air conditioning but this is the one unit that needs it. Perhaps it is the situation of the only opening windows/doors. And of note re: the view - the living room has 6 huge windows as shown in the photos. But 3 of the blinds do not open. We found a note when we arrived that they are out of service. We called to ask when they would be fixed, and were informed they had been out of service for a while. No one fixed them during our 8 day stay. This obstructed the view by half the windows.
But a beautiful condo. Just too hot to enjoy. We would therefore not stay here again.
Mahalo Mark for the feedback. Unfortunately, when the trades and breezes die down, some units can get hot....especially on the water with all the windows. We apologize on the blinds, that should not have happened. I looked into it and it seems parts were ordered and just did not come in on time for your stay. Again, we apologize. They are not fixed. We understand the heat and have many other properties that have AC so we will find the perfect spot for you next time. Aloha and a hui hou.
The view was incredible. Fell asleep every night with the sound of the ocean right outside the master bedroom slider. House was well stocked and the perfect location to watch sunrise and sunset. Absolutely loved it!
Excellent location to the beach, sunrise and sunsets. Staff was very helpful
We could not give the property 5 stars as there were structural issues as the building is more than 40 years old and has a few leaks during rain storms.
Mahalo William for your review. Makahuena is older, but the AOAO is working hard to keep it updated. Know that the roof is on the schedule to be replaced soon, but in the meantime we will alert them to the leaks. Mahalo for letting know and sorry for any inconvenience.
Perfect Honeymoon Suite
My wife and I stayed in Makahuena 3103 during July of 2013 for our honeymoon to Kauai (VRBO won't let me put an earlier date than 2015), and we had a phenomenal time there! The view from the lanai (porch) is probably the best view on the island as it overlooks a rocky cove of crystal clear blue ocean with occasional sea turtles venturing into toe cove. My wife and I spent time each day enjoying the view from our room. My poor wife got a severe sunburn and we stayed in our suite the next couple days, but she claimed that the view was so good that she didn't feel like she was missing out on being in Kauai. The master bedroom is very nice and I believe the bed was a king size. The master bathroom was probably the nicest we've been to at any suite or resort we have been to due to the cool sinks, plenty of room for two people, and the double shower heads with two different settings. Very clean and nice as well. The kitchen was nice, clean, and well stocked with dishes, pots, and silverware. The living room area was spacious and good for reading and planning the day's adventures. The windows overlook the ocean, so it is gorgeous! Note that this room is really a two bedroom suite, and while we did not use the second bedroom or bathroom, they were both nice and well kept. The location was also very convenient as Poipu is kind of the middle of the island, in that about an hour and a half either way will get you to Tunnels Beach to the North and Waimea Canyon to the West.
The other day my wife and I were reminiscing about our amazing trip to Kauai, how much we enjoyed our suite there, and how much it would cost to return, and I stumbled upon this VRBO page, and decided to post a review:) This suite is a splurge for a lot of people, my wife and I included, but you can cut costs by making breakfast and lunch in the suite. My wife and I found that our time at Makahuena was definitely worth it and we look forward to returning in the future.
Mahalo Daniel for taking the time to write a review and are so glad you have fond memories. We look forward to hosting you again soon.
