Why Rebecca Holder chose Cushing

For much of our lives, we embraced the spirit of a "sojourner," traveling from place to place, learning about cultures and people as we work and at play. Our mode of travel, most often, has been a sailboat. In fact, we named one of our boats, "Sojourner," a 52-foot Tayana, that we sailed around the world on in the early 1990's.

Our Sojourner logo included a simple representation of a globe....a symbol of our quest to see the world. You will see the Sojourner "globe" on the fore peak of the entrance to our home and above the double doors of the boat house.

To some, Sojourner's Rest may seem a bit of an oxymoron. How could a who travels from place to place, stopping only temporarily in each spot....ever rest? To us, the fact that we, as Sojourners, have chosen our house on the coast of Maine to rest makes it very special. Here is the place we have chosen to watch the cherish the eagle's sweep....and listen to an evening of "no human noises."

Welcome to Sojourner's Rest....

What makes this house unique

You have read about our home and know about its physical structure , its amenities, both inside and out. You have seen the pictures and noticed the Maine cottage look of the exterior and the Arts & Crafts style of the interior. Now we would like to share with you the "soul" of our home.

In 2005 when we designed the house, we read The Pattern Language. A classic in the world of architecture, it encouraged us to link "social graces and structure," to incorporate organic materials, and to design energy efficient systems. We recognized an alignment with Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie designs and the Arts & Crafts/Craftsman Movement, a style that appeals to us for many of the same reasons.

Our vision was to create human-sized spaces that invite people to talk to each other. Whether folks choose to chat around the fireplace, at the bar in the kitchen or over a meal in the dining room, they feel comfortable in an intimate space. And, at the same time, they can gaze from one space to the other in an uninterrupted open design. In the summer, the outdoor gathering places extend the opportunities for quiet contemplation or "happy hours" in the sunset. From the screened-in porch, the eye-to-eye view of the eagles and ospreys is inspiring.

The unity of style and design, featuring red oak and the clean, simple lines of the Arts & Crafts Movement in every room, merges with the natural patterns of the land and seascape outside. In over ten years, we have still never tired of the "Oh WOW" thrill we feel when we walk through the front door and gaze without interruption to the water below.

The house has become a special gathering place for our family .... most especially our son, daughter-in-law and two grandsons who visit each summer. With the guest bedrooms in the lower level they have their privacy, without being relegated to a distant guest house. Swimming, fishing, kayaking, sailing, watching wildlife...all have generated memories we hope they never forget .... we know we won't.

Magical Maine

  • 5 of 5

We spent a perfect week at Sojourner's Rest in early July! The setting is so peaceful, but there was also plenty to keep tweens and teens busy. The dock is just below the house and was perfect for swimming off of, fishing and kayaking. We also bought 2 floats at Walmart in Rockland and just paddled around. We spent many contented hours in and around the water! The kids rode their bikes almost everyday - to the tennis courts, to the other dock or just exploring the neighborhood. There were plenty of beds and room for all, but our boys chose to sleep in the turret (upstairs screened porch) all week. I don't think they've ever slept better! The house is equipped with everything you need - even a full kit for cooking your own fresh lobster! We took advantage of this and enjoyed a fabulous fresh lobster meal on the patio at sunset - perfect! We had such beautiful weather that we really didn't feel the need to venture too far from the house and its amenities. We did spend late one afternoon in Rockland, which is a quick drive up Rte 1. Very cute shops and restaurants, and we loved Project Puffin - an information center/ museum dedicated to maintaining the puffin population. The Slipway in Thomaston had great food and atmosphere - right on the water and very close by. We have been visiting Maine for years, but had never ventured to Cushing. We are so glad we did! Sojourner's Rest was the perfect spot to unwind and spend time with our family and friends. This was by far our best visit to Maine. We will definitely be back!

Peaceful Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Sojourner's Rest! The setting is so serene and the views are gorgeous. My favorite part of each day was sipping coffee on the deck in the morning while watching the bald eagle soar among the trees. The dock is just beyond the house and was perfect for kayaking, swimming and paddle boarding. Tennis courts are nearby and the surrounding area is quiet, private and simply beautiful. The house itself had everything you could need and we loved the layout...plenty of room for our family of five and everything was so comfortable. We enjoyed some delicious dinners in Rockland, chartered a sailboat for a sunset cruise on Penobscot Bay in Camden, and took a day trip to Acadia National Park. This home was the perfect place to stay to enjoy all the charm Maine has to offer. We can't wait to return!

A retreat to be experienced

  • 5 of 5

This home defines peaceful. We can’t recommend this wonderful get-away enough. The detail and comfort in every nook caused our cares and stresses to immediately melt. Our best memories include bald eagle watching, taking hikes around the area, and watching the tides and boats on the bay (while savoring a fresh lobster dinner). Within a short drive are fabulous restaurants and charming little shops in town. Next visit we will time our stay to coincide with blueberry ripening.

It seems that there’s always one place you go that sets the standard for a perfect time away from a hectic life. For us, this is that place.
