About the property

Coveted Location on Cascade Beach Road, on private, cobblestone beach

Completely renovated in early 2017, the Cedarwood Hollow Cabin rests on the very edge of a private cobblestone beach on Lake Superior. Located on a quite stretch of Cascade Beach Road, halfway between Lutsen and Grand Marais, Cedarwood sits along the boundary of Cascade State Park. This authentic timber-frame chalet has been completely renovated to retain all of its original charm of a bygone era, while updated with all the modern amenities - including a 48" Italian pro-stye gas range in the kitchen. Offering an abundantly spacious layout, the Great Room is home to a wood-burning fireplace, dining table, game table, and picture windows so close to the Big Lake that it's waves practically lap at your toes. The master bedroom has a King Bed and its private entrance directly onto the deck allows guests to fall asleep to the soothing sound of gentle lapping of waves. The 2 full bathrooms are outfitted in spa-like fashion, with an oversized deep-soaker tubs and heated floors. With the 2nd and 3rd loft bedrooms both outfitted with queen beds - and a sleeper-sofa in a private corner of the loft - Cedarwood can comfortably sleep 8 adults.

Outside, a beach-side patio sits elevated just above the cobblestone shore. A pro-style gas grill makes for easy outdoor cooking and gathering. As idyllic as the Cedarwood Cottage is, the cabin itself is only the beginning...

Cedarwood is situated in the heart of the most legendary and spectacular section of the entire North Shore. Except for a few private parcels of land right along the Superior Shore, Cedarwood essentially sits in the middle of pristine Cascade State Park. Hundreds of miles of Sawtooth Mountains trails (hiking in the summer, cross-country and snow mobile in the winter), are accessible right out the front door of the cabin. Cascade Lodge & Restaurant is an easy 1 mile walk and features great food, drinks, and frequent live music. A trail leading to Cascade Falls is within 1/4 mile from Cedarwood's door! And within a 30 minute drive, everything for which the North Shore is known is accessible... world-class hiking, fishing, kayaking, biking trails, skiing, galleries, restaurants, NorthHouse Folk School, and a vibrant live music scene. After all, Painted Rock sits in the heart of Cook County and Grand Marais - which was recently named the "Coolest Small Town in America"!

About Becky Katzenmeier

With both of us native to Kansas, we made our first foray to the Northwoods in 1994, shortly after being newly married. Little did we know that initial 5 night paddling trip, launched from the end of the Gunflint Trail outside of Grand Marais, would lead to a lifetime of pursuing the Northwoods and everything it represents. We now own and operate a Tallgrass Prairie retreat & preserve in the Flint Hills of Kansas, and we love the gentle beauty of the prairie - a sublime beauty the soaks slowly into your soul rather than a dramatic beauty that hits you upside the head! We find the Northwoods to be similar in that regard. Whether the quiet lapping of waves again a rock shore, the distant haunting call of a loon, the silent rise of a full moon over Lake Superior, or the crackle of a wood fire on a frigid snowy night, we find the essence of the Northwoods to invigorate our hearts and spirits like nowhere else. We can't think of anything more fulfilling than sharing our little piece of the North with guests in hope that it will be as life-giving to them as it is to us. Welcome to our Cedarwood Cottage!

Becky Katzenmeier purchased this cottage in 2016

Why Becky Katzenmeier chose Lutsen

Cedarwood has a unique blend of old and new... its authentic timber-frame architecture was well ahead of its time, but its charm is expressive of the bygone era in which it was built. It is uniquely perched right on the edge of one of the most stunning stretches of beach anywhere along the North Shore - with Superior's wave's literally lapping at its edge! It captured our imaginations since the first time we stumbled upon it - and still does today!

What makes this cottage unique

This property is uniquely equipped to accommodate a large number of guests... and, we have two other properties, Painted Rock VRBO #761264, and WoodSong VRBO #1054023, located nearby and can be combined together to allow multiple families or friends groups to stay close in close proximity.

Amazing weekend!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed three nights in this beautiful cabin and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect location!! The cabin was warm and inviting and had everything we needed and more!! That kitchen!! We cooked and ate all our meals in the cabin - no reason to leave!! The beds were very comfortable with fine quality linens and pillows. The first night the lake was quite active so we were lulled to sleep by the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach - just what we were hoping for! We made good use of the fireplace and spent many hours visiting and enjoying the breathtaking view of the lake from those windows on the main floor! We couldn't have been more pleased with our stay! Thank you, Becky, for sharing your little piece of heaven with us!! We can't wait to return!

Just what the Dr. ordered.......

  • 5 of 5

This cabin and really the entire area is just what we needed for a family get away. If you haven't been this far up the north shore, do it. Just do it. We were fortunate enough to be guests during a great early season storm so the wave action was impressive and the lake was active.

The cabin is everything that is promised in the literature, we really did not find a weak point. The amenities are well thought out and high end while still maintaining comfort and casualness. Becky was great to work with and communication was great.

If there is a regret, is that we haven't been there before and we weren't able to stay longer.

I am generally not an easy reviewer, just not finding anything but the goods to say about this experience.

We had such a lovely time at this cabin!

  • 5 of 5

Our family shared so much quality time at this special cabin. The views were breathtaking and you can spend hours right outside your door looking at beautiful rocks on the beach. One day as we were sitting on the shore, an eagle flew right overhead. We had fires, played board games, did puzzles and just slowed down and enjoyed our family in this special place. The beds are super cozy too! This is a fantastic space!

Wonderful week!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at the Cedarwood Cottage and could not have asked for a more wonderful place to stay! The owners have thought of everything to make your stay in this beautiful cottage comfortable. My family has stayed in many VRBOS and this was one of the best. It was everything stated in the description by the owners. In addition to the comforts of the cottage, the owners provided great information about the area including great hikes and places to eat.
