Overview

About the property

Historic Cabin Oozing W/ Charm, Perfectly Situated Between Lutsen & Grand Marais

Painted Rock sits perched on a quaint spit of Lake Superior ledge rock, halfway between Lutsen and Grand Marais, on the edge of Cascade State Park. This historic log cabin has been fully restored to retain all its original charm and history of bygone days, while updated with all the modern amenities. An unusually large Main Gathering Room is home to a wood-burning fireplace, dining table, game table, and picture windows that bring the Big Lake indoors in all seasons. The master bedroom has a Queen Bed and its private entrance directly onto the deck allows guests to fall asleep to the soothing sound of gentle lapping of waves. The bathroom is outfitted in spa-like fashion, with an oversized deep-soaker tub and heated floors. With a 2nd bedroom also outfitted with a queen bed - and a deluxe queen sleeper-sofa in the Main Room - Painted Rock can comfortably sleep 4-6 adults.

Outside, an oversized deck sits just a few steps off the ledge rock shore line. A pro-style gas grill makes for easy outdoor cooking and gathering. As idyllic as the Painted Rock Cabin is, the cabin itself is only the beginning...

Painted Rock is situated in the heart of the most legendary and spectacular section of the entire North Shore. Except for a few private parcels of land right along the Superior Shore, Painted Rock essentially sits in the middle of pristine Cascade State Park. Hundreds of miles of Sawtooth Mountains trails (hiking in the summer, cross-country and snow mobile in the winter), are accessible right out the front door of the cabin. Cascade Lodge & Restaurant is an easy 1/2 mile walk and features great food, drinks, and frequent live music. A trail leading to Cascade Falls is within 100 yards of Painted Rock's from door! And within a 30 minute drive, everything for which the North Shore is known is accessible... world-class hiking, fishing, kayaking, biking trails, skiing, galleries, restaurants, NorthHouse Folk School, and a vibrant live music scene. After all, Painted Rock sits in the heart of Cook County and Grand Marais - which was recently named the "Coolest Small Town in America"!

About Becky Katzenmeier

With both of us native to Kansas, we made our first foray to the Northwoods in 1994, shortly after being newly married. Little did we know that initial 5 night paddling trip, launched from the end of the Gunflint Trail outside of Grand Marais, would lead to a lifetime of pursuing the Northwoods and everything it represents. We now own and operate a Tallgrass Prairie retreat & preserve in the Flint Hills of Kansas, and we love the gentle beauty of the prairie - a sublime beauty the soaks slowly into your soul rather than a dramatic beauty that hits you upside the head!

We find the Northwoods to be similar in that regard. Whether the quiet lapping of waves again a rock shore, the distant haunting call of a loon, the silent rise of a full moon over Lake Superior, or the crackle of a wood fire on a frigid snowy night, we find the essence of the Northwoods to invigorate our hearts and spirits like nowhere else. We can't think of anything more fulfilling than sharing our little piece of the North with guests in hope that it will be as life-giving to them as it is to us. Welcome to Painted Rock!

Fantastic property on the shores of Lake Superior

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is beautifully restored, situated right on Lake Superior. The shore is just a few steps from the back door. The kitchen is very nice, with beautiful appliances, and fully stocked with all the pots and pans, dishes, utensils, etc., needed to make dinner, lunch, or breakfast. The main living area has a beautiful cozy fireplace, dining table, game table and sofa and chair, and it is decorated very nicely (cozy)! It is obvious that the owners put their hearts and souls into this place. We hope to go back someday!

Awesome north shore retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Can't say enough about how awesome the Painted Rock cabin was. We really felt like we were staying in something special. The location is perfect...not far from Cascade River State Park, Lutsen and Grand Marais. It had a boundary waters feel, but with all the access to the north shore parks. We ended up eating in each night as the kitchen was fun to cook in...and the little table by the window served as the perfect dining spot. We were lucky to have a full moon for our stay...which added to the ambiance. Design of the cabin was obviously given a a lot of thought. You can feel the passion of the owners for what they do (restoring cabins being one of them) when staying at Painted Rock. Only complaint we have is that we were not there longer!

Pros - location, cabin quality, cabin amenities, views, true cabin feel, waterfront, long quiet road to run, bike or walk, great owner communication and help, spotless when we arrived, etc...etc...etc..

Cons - really non. If anything to be aware of is: The shower tub is so cool... but imagine a tad tough for an older, less nimble person. Fireplace is tricky. Took us a couple of times before we got the hang of it.

We will be back!

Serene

  • 5 of 5

Minnesota's north shore is second to none. If you are looking to disconnect from the world this is the place to do it. The cabin has that familiar smokey smell and is very welcoming. The waves can easily be heard and put us to sleep each night. We moved the chairs down by the rocks where we had our morning coffee and sunset campfires.

Launching our kayaks was a bit of a challenge with the rocky shoreline but we did it without a problem.

We had the chance to meet the owners who were staying down the road the week we were there. Very delightful people.

It was hard to leave this serene place when our week was over.

Highly recommended to anyone looking for an escape from a hectic life.

Esthetically Pleasing Log Cabin On Lake Superior

  • 5 of 5

The ambience of this well preserved and furnished log cabin is truly outstanding. All of the historical integrity remains, while high end and tasteful furnishings provide 21st century comforts. The rocky shore provides easy access to observe the ever changing and mysterious Lake Superior, it is just minutes away from the charming town of Grand Marais, and it is situated on a gravel road which provides a safe place to run or walk and take in the smell of the balsams. This place has it all. We've stayed here twice and enjoyed every aspect of it.

Even Better Than Expected

  • 5 of 5

Amazing location and view. Secluded. Right on the Lake. Impeccably restored, rustic cabin. Both luxurious and rustic at the same time. No kitschy cabin decorations. Access to beautiful Cascade River falls - very close by. More hikes if more adventurous. Good golf at Lutsen close by, too.
