Storybook Northwoods Log Cabin on Lake Superior between Lutsen and Grand Marais
Painted Rock sits perched on a quaint spit of Lake Superior ledge rock, halfway between Lutsen and Grand Marais on the edge of Cascade River State Park.
This historic log cabin has been fully restored to retain all its original charm and history of bygone days, while updated with all the modern amenities. An unusually large Main Room is home to a wood-burning fireplace, dining table, game table, and picture windows that bring the Big Lake indoors in all seasons. The master bedroom has a queen bed, and its private entrance directly onto the deck allows guests to fall asleep to the soothing sound of gently lapping waves. The bathroom is outfitted in spa-like fashion, with an oversized deep-soaker tub and heated floors. With a 2nd bedroom, also outfitted with a queen bed,, Painted Rock can comfortably sleep 4 adults.
Outside, an oversized deck sits just a few steps from the ledge rock shoreline. A pro-style gas grill makes for easy outdoor cooking and gathering. As idyllic as Painted Rock is, the cabin itself is only the beginning …
Painted Rock is situated in the heart of the most legendary and spectacular section of the entire North Shore. Except for a few private parcels of land right along the Lake Superior Shore, Painted Rock essentially sits in the middle of pristine Cascade River State Park. Hundreds of miles of Sawtooth Mountains trails (hiking in the summer, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter) are accessible right out the front door of the cabin. Cascade Lodge Restaurant & Pub is an easy 1/2-mile walk and features great food, drinks, and frequent live music. A trail leading to Cascade Falls is within a mile of Painted Rock's door! And within a 30-minute drive, everything the North Shore is known for is accessible: world-class hiking, fishing, kayaking, biking trails, skiing, galleries, restaurants, NorthHouse Folk School, and a vibrant live music scene. After all, Painted Rock sits in the heart of Cook County and Grand Marais, which was named by Travel & Leisure magazine as "America's Best Small Lake Town" in 2023!

From the big grand view right out the cabin, to the attention to tiny details in every corner of the cabin, this stay was a dream come true. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful cabin! As someone who has been learning to be an environmental steward and how to restore prairies in Soutbern Minnesota, knowing these are people who care so much about the environment was an added bonus! Thank you for the wonderful stay!
This little cabin was magical! There were so many details that came together so beautifully. Though small, it was the perfect get-away right on the shore of the lake. Thank you!!!!
This cabin is perfect for our little party of 2 couples. The cabin is situated right on the lakeshore so be ready for the sounds of wave crashing on the rocks ! The fireplace makes the cabin experience complete. A great place to relax for a few days.
everything was very clean- they left extra firewood. My daughter got sick during our stay (of no fault of property) and they helped out with some replacement bedding- very nice place and hosts!
This place is a gem! We had a wonderful relaxing visit in this well kept, well appointed cabin- a true throwback to a simpler time for these boomers, reminiscent of the cabins of our youth. It was just perfect- the lake 20 feet in front of you. Fun to watch and listen to the ice breaking and moving in and out. Fireplace was such a sweet touch too. We had some trouble with the oven and Keil was here in a flash to fix it- and couldn’t be nicer. They are good stewards of this property and it’s wonderful they can share it with us all. It was a perfect 3 days and we will return!
Very welcoming. The cabin is true to it's origins while also having amneities that were way beyond our expectations. The appliances and fixtures while modern, perfectly blended in with the cabin's aesthetics.
The experience was perfect. The kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms were beautifully decorated and comfortable. It had everything we needed. The fireplace stones lived up to its name, Painted Rock. Proximity to the sights and sounds of Lake Superior was just outside the door.
Loved this cozy cottage on the North Shore. Feel asleep each night listening to the waves. Great place to decompress, read, play games, hike. This rental retains its historical charm with modern upgrades. Everything is in great condition, well equipped and so comfortable. Lucky to be able to stay here! Thanks!
We had a wonderful weekend at Painted Rock! It was the perfect location for us! It had everything we needed and was super cozy with the fireplace, despite the gale force winds on the lake!! We would definitely stay again!

About the host
Hosted by Rebecca Katzenmeier
With both of us native to Kansas, we made our first foray to the Northwoods in 1994, shortly after being newly married. Little did we know that that initial five-night paddling trip, launched from the end of the Gunflint Trail outside of Grand Marais, would lead to a lifetime of pursuing the Northwoods and everything it represents. We now own and operate a Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in the Flint Hills of Kansas, and we love the gentle beauty of the prairie — a sublime beauty that soaks slowly into your soul rather than a dramatic beauty that hits you upside the head.
We find the Northwoods to be similar in that regard. Whether the quiet lapping of waves against a rock shore, the distant haunting call of a loon, the silent rise of a full moon over Lake Superior, or the crackle of a wood fire on a frigid snowy night, we find the essence of the Northwoods invigorates our hearts and spirits like nowhere else. We can't think of anything more fulfilling than sharing our little piece of the North with guests in the hope that it will be as life-giving to them as it is to us. Welcome to Painted Rock!
Why they chose this property
Painted Rock is uniquely perched right on the edge of one of the most stunning stretches of beach anywhere along the North Shore — with Lake Superior's waves literally lapping at its edge! It has captured our imaginations since the first time we stumbled upon it — and still does today!
What makes this property unique
Our historic log cabin, Painted Rock evokes a bygone area when the rugged shore of Lake Superior was first becoming a haven for those looking to escape to the enchanted Northwoods from cities like Minneapolis and beyond. In addition to this property, we have three other properties, Cedarwood Hollow (Vrbo #948867), SweetWater Cottage (Vrbo #1770536), and WoodSong (Vrbo #1054023) located nearby and can be combined together to allow multiple families or friend groups to stay close in close proximity.
