This renovated 1940's AUTHENTIC LOG CABIN, ON THE ST. JOE RIVER is located in SW Michigan's charming Buchanan.
Only 90 minutes from downtown Chicago, this cozy, hip, serene little getaway with an original wood burning stone fireplace is a little sanctuary away from home. Explore the area, go for a hike, make a cozy fire or simply enjoy the afternoon lounging on the half way deck listening to birds and watching the river go by!
The cabin is a 20 minute drive to the Harbor Country area where you can shop, gallery hop, watch foreign films, see live theatre, and enjoy Lake Michigan's beaches and sunsets. Or stay in the area to explore Buchanan's historic downtown, Tabor Hill Winery, Fernwood Nature Center or a quick trip to Notre Dame campus to watch a football game.
Over the past 3 years the interior of this cabin has been renovated. Careful effort was made to keep the authenticity and integrity intact. The dropped ceilings were removed which covered most of the stone fireplace and the original planked ceiling. The interior walls were removed as well, to give it a more open airy feel. In the bathroom you can see a sample of the original stained logs and ceiling in their original form. The flooring and kitchen counter tops have been milled by a local wood artisan from the area. During the winter months, the wood burning fireplace does an amazing job at heating the space and warming the soul. (Of course there is gas forced heat as well!)
The owner's sense of design spills into every corner where you can find original artwork decorating the walls, fresh flowers adding a splash of color, and all the comforts to make your stay enjoyable.
You will find a 'cabin book' on the desk inside which includes history of the cabin, things to do in the area, maps, fliers of current events and a guest book to log in a few words.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
I have been coming to the Harbor Country area for years. It is an amazing area filled with nature, art and inspiration. When we saw this cabin for sale, we couldn't pass it up. Even though it needed a lot of work and TLC, we saw the potential of what it could be. I wanted it to feel transformative when you walked in the front door so that you immediately feel a sense of peace and calm. Creating an open airy feel in such a dark small space was a fun challenge for me. Everything has been carefully designed and handcrafted to update this space including a new kitchen and bath. It has been a very rewarding project. We sincerely hope you enjoy it! ~ Elizabeth

This cabin is a true gem. If you're looking for somewhere to stay to get away from reality for a few days, then this is the place for you. The secluded location is perfect, with the veranda and steps down to the river. Even though the weather was really warm for the end of October, we lit the open fire both evenings and watched Audrey Hepburn films :). A great getaway-from-it-all cabin and we would happily have spent more time there. I would love to stay here again in the future. Thanks and best wishes from Chicago, IL and Uppsala, Sweden.

We rented this property for a one night, two day romantic getaway from Chicagoland. It greatly exceeded our expectations. The 90 min. scenic drive to the cabin was a pleasant bonus. The cabin is located on a beautiful piece of property along the river and surrounded by big old trees, rolling hills, and vineyards. The cabin itself is simply amazing with a huge stone, floor to ceiling, wood burning fireplace, lots of windows that let nature pour in, and decor that is cozy yet artistic. We caught lunch outside the town of Buchanan at Wheatberry which was good. The kitchen allowed me to easily roast a chicken while we watched a movie by the fire, drank wine, and enjoyed each other's company. We will definitely be back in the winter.

Elizabeth, What an incredible "pearl" you have created in this wonderful cabin! The attention to detail and creativity shows wherever your eye stops. The location couldn't be more perfect and relaxing. Our only regret was we were in town for a family wedding so we weren't here as much/long as we would have hoped. I guess that means we will come back soon just to sit and drink in the calm of this magical place! Thanks for a perfect weekend. Jeff and Kim Schaumburg, IL

The cabin was a welcome birthday getaway. The river location made the summer heat bearable, and local attractions like vineyards, farmer's market, and live swing music gave us plenty to do. My favorite part of every day was returning to the cabin, however, to enjoy the surroundings and reconnect with myself. I have already recommended it to many friends! I only hope it doesn't become TOO popular!

My three children and I stayed in this charming little cabin last August. It is a wonderful get-away destination - clean cabin, everything provided, peaceful riverside setting, easy drive from Indianapolis. From the cabin we drove to Lake Michigan twice - watched the sunset, played in the water - but also enjoyed the small town of Buchanan. The deck on the river bank is a great "morning coffee spot". The owner, Elizabeth, goes out of her way to be accommodating and help to ensure a pleasant stay. Highly recommend this rental.

We recommend this Buchanan area log cabin after our recent visit. The owner has done a wonderful job creating a comfortable and reflective retreat, just hours from Chicago. The recent log cabin renovation couldn't be a more fitting experience - it's a fabulous blend of urban meeting rural, against the backdrop of the St Joe river just steps away. We look forward to returning again soon.

Our stay at Elizabeth's cabin was absolutely wonderful. She transformed the interior from dark, small rooms into a light, airy and modern space. We loved sitting on the lower deck and watching the St. Joseph river go by. We will be back in the fall and winter.

This cabin is awesome... an amazing blend of cozy cabin with incredibly fresh and modern interior design tied together perfectly, it's really the best of both worlds. We like to sit on the deck down by the river and read a good book and have a evening fire in the outdoor pit... smoors! yum, yum, yum. In the cold months the indoor fireplace is amazing too. This place is great year around for a tranquil getaway. Elizabeth was also very accommodating in getting us additional fire wood for the weekend as we tend to burn a few more logs than the included supply! Highly recommend the cabin!
