We live full time in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas so, the views were nice but, do not surpass our snow capped mountains. None the less, we spent most of the time at the house, outside in the unseasonably warm weather and were so disappointed that the pool was too murky to take a swim. The house would have been pleasant enough if it had been at least cleared of cobwebs before our arrival and the multiple rodent traps and sensors in each room were unsettling at best. We arrived late Friday night ready to bbq our freshly caught salmon on the supplied bbq, but, no one informed us that it wasn't propane and we had to bring our own briquets. Being so far from a grocery store the men made a fire of wood to enjoy our catch. Living in a rural area myself, I would describe this place as rustic at best, certainly not what we expected......Owner response: I am very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay at our home. We have just completed a week stay in our beautiful retreat and feel rested and ready to start the new year. Our house is obviously not for everyone but for those who are looking for a very private, quiet retreat with amazing views of the valley below, and the Big Sur mountains in the distance, this is a very special place. As for the cobwebs, though I didn't notice any, I spoke to my housekeeper and she will make a point of double checking all corners. Regarding the pool it is crystal clear. Any time there is an issue my pool person will come out and take care of the problem right away. I just have to know it needs attention. Our house is located off a country road behind a private gate. We can see deer, bobcats, wild turkeys, skunks and owls from our decks in the meadow below. Because we are in the country, mice and gophers are part of the ecology as well and they are a constant control issue. We use a non-poison electric system in the house between guests as a deterrent and have a regular service to help us keep these prolific creatures in check. Thank you for the comment about the charcoal barbecue, I have made that note in our VRBO description to prevent any future confusion. There is a small market just a mile down the road which carries milk, eggs, bread, paper towels, etc which you may run out of or forget. I send this and other information on local resources to every renter ahead of time. For future renters please read through this, it is helpful for planning your trip. In the 3 years we have rented our house this is the first less than 5 star review formally written to VRBO, not to mention the wonderful comments that were emailed to us but never made it to our listing. We appreciate feedback and we will continue to do everything possible to make a stay in our cozy cottage retreat a wonderfully special experience.

Hello Madalene, We just want to thank you and your husband for sharing your special retreat with us. It was so relaxing and beautiful, it just took us away. We can really appreciate all the hard work and thought you put into the Rose Cottage. The gardens were so beautiful. We really couldn't get enough of just looking out into the valley, enjoying the warm breeze and wildlife all around. It was more then we could have hoped for and the photos really don't do it justice. We definitely hope to return soon. We're still floating, Mitchell and MaggieRecommended for: Girls getaway, romantic getaway.

I wanted to take a moment and let you know how much we enjoyed the Rose Cottage. Your property is gorgeous and we were very comfortable and loved the outside space. While we were driving up and down the coast on the last day we reviewed everything we loved about your property: the location, the views, the outside spaces, the cleanliness, the comfortable beds, the warmers for chilly nights, the snuggly blankets and covers, wonderful linens and towels, the outside and indoor dining options, the walking paths, the gardens, the little lizards, the fire pit, the reading and viewing libraries (although we spent most of our time outside) and just the sheer peacefulness of the surroundings. It was extremely relaxing and very comfortable!!Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, age 55+.

We had a wonderful time at the Rose Cottage! Such a spectacular setting! The cottage is well appointed and very clean. A soak in the hot tub enjoying the stunning view was the perfect after-marathon activity before going off to Cafe Rustica for a superb birthday dinner. Love the dining room addition and kitchen remodel. The kitchen is supplied with everything one needs for cooking. Eating outside on the deck was a treat, as was the outdoor fire pit. The nightly frog serenade was wunderbar. Can't say enough about how great our weekend was.Recommended for: Girls getaway, age 55+.

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful location! Location and privacy afforded by it was amazing. Gorgeous night-sky views replaced the amazing daytime views of the surrounding area. Set up well to just RELAX, grill, sunbathe, hot-tub, walk the grounds, etc. but close enough to make a good base for exploring Carmel, Monterey and Big Sur. We have a six-year old son and he loved the fence lizards that come out in the morning to enjoy the sun on the deck. Don't worry, they're small and harmless...and adorable! Owner was great to work with also. Highly recommend!Recommended for: Girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children.

A wonderful place for a family gathering over the holiday weekend ! We loved the gated seclusion of it, the multi level decks with pool, hot tub and dining areas, and the overall layout of the house, allowing privacy for the grandparents (us) in the comfortable master-bedroom upstairs in the main house. We like to cook and to barbecue and certainly this house is well appointed and set up for all of that. Sunday Brunch at Michael Jones rustic restaurant not too far down the road was a treat also. Carmel Valley weather is the best, with sun and clear skies the whole four days. A drive into Carmel and the beach gave us the usual taste of fog that we enjoy when there, but we couldn't have been happier to get back to the poolside chaises high in the hills of Carmel Valley. We look forward to a return visit.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, pet owners, families with young children.

Enjoyed the mornings in the private hot tub and just watching the fog roll past the mountains. It was great not hearing any other noise except for nature. Our teenagers enjoyed relaxing in the pool and not having to deal with others. No cells or computers, just family time.Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

This is a secluded retreat. The stars at unbelievable and the quite welcome after a world so intent on noise. Don't worry about your cell phone or computer, just leave them at home. You won't need them. Relax. Have dinner in town and enjoy the great food at the local restaurants. Travel down the hill for the world, but why bother? Yes it really is secluded. We'll be back.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, pet owners.

Great location with breathtaking views! The house itself was a bit older than expected, but who cares about that if it offers 5 levels of outdoor living space that deserves praise. First level is a large dining area with two tables and enough space for dancing (clue: outside speakers and no neighbors around J). Then, a Jacuzzi area, BBQ area, fire pit surrounded with benches, and, of course, an amazing pool. Unfortunately, we had to attend a wedding in the area and were away from home most of the time. Surprisingly, we found a neighboring area a great place for biking. There is 20 miles loop of really good biking that starts right from the gate. We really enjoyed the ride. The house was super clean when we arrived. Beds were already made, which we were grateful for, since we arrived late and were tired. We found beds to be very comfortable and perfect for a good rest. It would be a perfect place for families with older kids, since there are a lot of stairs, or for groups with no kids. Fun place!Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

About the owner: My husband was born and raised in Carmel, we were married in Carmel Valley 30 years ago and have been going to either the village or Carmel often in those 30 years. This area is home and we plan to retire there someday. Currently we live in the San Francisco Bay area. Our country home has become our retreat, a place to unwind and recharge .We love to get out of the city and into the sunshine and slower pace of the country. We never grow tired of looking out at the vineyard filled valley from our deck or driving into Carmel for a sunset walk on the amazing white sand beach.
Why the Owner Chose Carmel Valley:
We found this property by chance on a business trip to Carmel. Once the realtor opened the gate to the property and we saw the beautiful meadow filled with lupine, poppies and ancient oak trees we knew we were home.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We love the quiet. You will notice when you first get out of the car the only sound you hear is the crickets and the frogs. We love the views of the valley, watching the finger of fog moving in and out of the valley below in the early morning or evening. We love eating dinner out on our deck in the soft candlelight on a warm night. We love to drive into Carmel to walk on the beach at sunset. There are so many things to do but often we just stay home with a pile of books and sit on the deck reading and relaxing.
