My wife and I and another couple stayed at Hale Kono Kai from August 29th, 2013 to September 1st, 2013. The home is located on Kaweonui Road which evidently is famous because of the Albatross nesting in front and around the homes. It was the first time I saw a "Slow for Albatross" road sign. The property is surrounded by tropical plants and Coconut trees. You can see the ocean from almost every spot in the home. When we opened the gates to the courtyard, we first noticed the ocean view. The home has one of the best locations on the ocean bluff. It has a due north panoramic ocean view with a lush jungle in the foreground. We enjoyed the back lanai every morning and night because of the view and because you can hear the waves crashing. We also seem to have made quite a few feathered friends with all of the Cardinals coming over for a hand out. The home has been upgraded recently. I noticed the house had just been painted. I believe the carpets upstairs are new. The front bathroom has just been remodeled. It appears some varnishing and other lighting improvements are underway - probably between bookings. My wife and I stayed in the master suite upstairs. The beautiful room has a high ceiling and open Cedar beams. The best part of the master bedroom is the large picture window which frames the ocean view between two palm trees. I spent a lot of time just sitting upstairs enjoying the ocean. There is a nice seating area with two large chairs and a small balcony. Downstairs the house has expensive stone flooring (think it's random pattern Quartzite); I haven't seen a floor as nice as this one except in luxury hotels or the old Aloha Lounge at HONO. The house has another advantage because of it's location. You can walk 1/2 block to a little-known trail which leads to Secret Beach. I saw some people walking down the street with masks and snorkels and they told me about the beach. We all went there the next day. It's about a 1/3 mile hike down to the beach. The house has an attached two car garage which is stocked with ocean gear and bikes. It's also great to have a washer and dryer handy as well as the outside shower in the side yard. We found enough fins and snorkel gear for all four of us. The last night we used the BBQ in the courtyard and ate on the back lanai dining table. We all agreed it was an exceptional value and that we would rent this house again. The ocean view from Hale Kono Kai is superior to the view we saw from any restaurant. Many thanks!

We recently got back from a trip to Kauai. I've never done VRBO so I'm not sure what to expect. I was heading in expecting cleanliness to the level of a regular 3 star hotel. The location of the property in our view was fantastic. It is near the St. Regis and close to the shops of Princeville, a quick drive to Hanalei and the Napali coast trail head. My wife really liked the sea view but I'd rather pay less and spend more on eating out and activities. The house is older and a little dark at night which was okay. Light switches are in odd places and some didn't work. There is also a lack of outlets to plug in battery chargers, laptop computers, etc. (our group had 3 avid photographers) During the day, it never got hot enough to need AC. The kitchen was spacious but lacking in countertop space to food prep, although we knew this going in from the photos. There's wifi, a medium size flat screen tv with cable, dishwasher, washer and dryer. The cleanliness was in our view below standard. There was a huge leak and puddle of water coming from the fridge when we arrived. It took the management company 2 days to get out to inspect it. We saw several cockroaches in the house. The master bed and pillows smelled musty. Its for these reasons that I am giving it an average. I don't know if these issues are avoidable without AC, which helps dehumidify the air. Additionally, it rained heavily while we were there and water was leaking in in the dining room, living room, master bedroom and in a hallway. We notified the management company so hopefully this will be fixed. The hot tub is small! We had 6 people staying and we fit 3 people in, comfortably but 4 was a no go. Its hard to tell the size of the hot tub from the photos so hopefully this info will be helpful. When we got there, there was no propane in either gas tank, I'm not sure if there typically is for a VRBO but when we stayed in Hawaii before at a hotel suite, there was propane. I'm not sure of the rules for VRBO, but there is very little in the pantry and kitchen. We thought there would be basic condiments left from previous visitors. We were surprised that the unit only came with 2 large garbage bags as you have to put out the trash midweek. All in all, a new experience and would recommend the place simply because of price and location. We plan on visiting Kauai again and will probably try to find a newer place next time depending on how many people come.

Manager response: Thank you for your review. We are glad you enjoyed the location and amazing view. We have many happy, repeat guests and hope that you also you also choose to return. We have taken your comments seriously and addressed each one. But its important to note that this year alone the home has been booked 75% of the year and this is the first we’ve heard of these concerns. We hired an electrician to inspect the home and the outlet location and functionality. He found that all outlets are working. He did note that there are some outlets in 2 of the bedrooms that are connected to the switch, so if the wall switch is off it will appear that the outlets are not working. Our housekeepers are independent contractors but we require them to guarantee their work. The housekeeping team is responsible for refilling the propane for the BBQ and ensuring an adequate amount of supplies, including trash bags, are left for arriving guests. In part because of your comments, we have since made a change with our housekeeper for this home. It is important to us that our guests are happy and satisfied, and had we known that the home did not meet your satisfaction during your stay, we would have had the housekeeper come back at no additional charge. Being in the tropics, we do experience some inspects from time to time, so this home receives professional pest control treatments on a quarterly basis. The pest control professionals will also spot treat, as needed. We pride ourselves on being very responsive to guests. Unfortunately, we received the initial call about the refrigerator after normal business hours. The guest informed us of the leak but also said that it was still keeping cool. We agreed that we would touch base in the morning before hiring an appliance repair person. I left the guest a voice mail around 9AM asking the condition of the refrigerator. He called us back in the early afternoon, stating the refrigerator was still staying cold but as a precaution he wanted us to send someone out. We immediately dispatched an appliance repair person who was not able to get to the home till the next morning. He found nothing wrong with the refrigerator. Condiments are not provided by the owner. Anything in the home will be left by prior guests so what condiments are available in the home varies from rental to rental and from week to week. Again, thank you for your review and comments. We hope to have you as our guests again.
