secluded hillside cottage with unobstructed jungle and valley views

Space 1,200 sq. ft.
Property type bungalow
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

1 bedroom cottage with mountain valley and jungle views.

Nahele Mele is built high up on the hillside that overlooks the jungles, mountains and valley. It is at located at the end of a county lane and is surrounded by thousands of acres of tropical rainforest. It is 1/4 mile off the main road so is free of traffic noise and the general hum of people noise. You can hear the river below , the ocean waves breaking and the jungle song birds.

The Song of the Jungle is secluded , private and very quiet. It is an 'ohana' cottage unit built at the far side of the main house so is tucked away, safe and cosy. It has it's own entrance and privacy including private garden areas. It looks out onto the jungle, gardens and extensive unobstructed mountain and valley views. It is ideal for one or two persons or a family with a child. Please note** Extra persons > 2 must be authorized and approved prior to arrival. There is an extra charge for persons > 2 noted on the rate schedule. The cottage is comprised of about 1000 sq ft and has four rooms plus 2 lanais. There is a large bedroom/sitting area with a queen bed. French doors lead from the bedroom out onto a separate enclosed lanai that overlooks the valley and jungle. This enclosed lanai has a bistro table for romantic dining and daybed for those who wish to sleep watching the stars. The kitchen area is medium sized with a full fridge, hotplate and toaster oven. It has an enclosed outdoor lu'au area as well with a BBQ and propane cook stove/oven. The indoor bathroom has a shower but no tub. There is also a privately located outdoor tigerwood shower in the garden area. The kitchen looks out onto the extensive garden area.

The 'Song' is 1/4 mile from a grocery store hub, sushi girl takeout, gift store and beachfront.

The Song of the Jungle is a quiet and peaceful world that lives up to its name. You wake up to a symphony of tropical birds mingled with the distant sounds of the river below and the ocean waves breaking . The enlcosed lanai is a wonderful place to enjoy your morning breakfast surrounded by the tropical gardens and unobstructed mountain and valley views where white egrets glide midst the palms. A 1/4 mile walk down the county lane takes you to the corner grocery store , sushi girl takeout, and beautiful Wainiha Beach. A quick drive or a 20-30 minute walk will get you to some of the best beaches in the world: Tunnels, Ke'e, Lumahai! as well as the famous Kalalau Trail. Three miles away is Hanalei town where shopping, the restaurants, and even a little night action can be found in a cozy beachtown atmosphere. This property is a homestay. #9481

About dawn mcconnell

.I moved to Kauai with my daughter in 2004 for health reasons. My health greatly improved ( Kauai is good for that) and my daughter went back to the mainland to university. This home seemed a bit big for me alone so I began sharing it with travelers , guest house style. I now am blessed to meet amazing people from all around the world. People who chose this place tend to be unique, gentle souls who fit into the local atmosphere with ease and grace. It has been a lot of fun for me.

dawn mcconnell purchased this bungalow in 2004

Why dawn mcconnell chose North Shore

I chose the house here because I am a world traveller and this place is one of the most amazing places, on many levels , that I have encountered in my life. As the locals say, it has' good mana'

What makes this bungalow unique

I am a writer and a photographer .The possibilities are of what can be captured on film and in words here are , each day, endlessly, timelessly fresh. The ocean, the jungle and the rivers are all right there. And the weather, well, pretty darn easy to take.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for the wonderful stay. We had a great time in the Song of the Jungle. It was so peaceful to sit on the lanai and watch the palms sway and listen to the crickets at night. We even enjoyed the downpours of rain because we got to read on the lanai and listen to the rain hitting the leaves. We also loved watching the geckos catch bugs on the screen.

Our favorite things that we did while we were here were:

Hiking Ke'e beach to Hanakopiai Falls, the botanical gardfens ( Lumahuli) hiking the Moalepe Trail, eating at the Mediteranean Gourmet. Postcards Cafe and the Mexican/ Brazilian place in Hanalei. We also loved the smoothies form Banana Joes. We look forward to returning

The property is a called an Ohana Bungalo which in Hawaii is similar to a mother in law unit. It functions completely on its own though and separate from the main portion of the home. It is at the back portion of the main home so has its own enclosed lanai area as well as its own garden area, bbq area, outdoor shower and washer and dryer

Beautiful Love Nest in the Jungle

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Dawns place!

The Nahele Mele Hale is a funky (in a good way), colorful and clean place to stay. Perched high on a hillside, the views of the surrounding mountains and lush vegetation is spectacular. The house is set up well with a sun-room/deck off of the entry with adjoining bedroom and kitchen. The outdoor shower might have been my favorite though.

The location couldn't be more perfect; almost halfway between Hanalei and Ke'e Beach. There's also great sushi, smoothies/lattes and a general store a short walk away.

Can't wait to go back,

p.s. We left Dawn's place for a final few days down in Poi Pu. After arriving at our condo complex--and passing five fast-food restaurants along the way--we looked at the complex full of parking lots and concrete and we just had to leave. I quickly called Dawn and she sweetly arranged lodging for us and we drove straight back to the jungle. :)

Can't wait to come back

  • 5 of 5

This place was a dream to come back to every night and catch some ZZZs. The lanai with screened windows lets you sleep while feeling the island breeze the whole time. You also get to hear the rain at night and the morning songbirds. Basically feels like sleeping outside minus the bugs and moisture. If that's not your thing the main bedroom has closed doors and fans. I usually spend more time hiking than going to the beach so this location was perfect for me. It's only a few minute drive from the beach. I've been to Hawaii about 20 times, mainly staying in hotels on the Big Island but this has been my most memorable stay.

We never met the owner Dawn. Although I reached out, I had no contact from her since I rented the place months ago. I was disappointed no one was there to greet us at check in. We searched around by ourselves until we found the door to the bottom story unlocked.

The good:

It had amazing views, a great outdoor shower, a nice caretaker named Matty, it was well supplied with anything you would need, and it was in a great location.

The bad:

It definitely had an ant problem-the ants were in every room, in beds, in the coffee maker, and falling from the ceiling. The ants might be a common problem in the area, I'm not sure.

While the house is remote, it is a two story house. The upper story is also rented out.

There is no AC and one ceiling fan so it can be muggy.

Wonderfully secluded piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed this rental! It was comfortable, well-equipped, and perfectly secluded with a beautiful view. We especially appreciated the use of beach gear, washer and dryer, wifi (since cell coverage is quite spotty), and the outdoor shower. It was just 1/2 mile to a coffee stand at road's end, and about 3 miles door to door to great snorkeling.

Amazing jungle experience.

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house. We did all of the local things - hiked Na Pali Coast, drove to Waimea Canyon, Mai Tai at Tahiti Nui, shopped Princeville, Hanalei, Hanapepe and Kapa'a, but we kept coming back each evening to our hideaway in the jungle for cocktail hour and dinner. The views are incomparable. Jimmy the cat was our best friend. No air conditioning, so it was muggy, but several fans kept it cool and we slept very well to the jungle sounds and birds singing. This was our 50th anniversary. We will return.

Magical Jungle Song

  • 5 of 5

This place is even better than the pictures and the reviews. After a few days on the southern part of Kauai, my husband and I came to Jungle Song for the last part of our first time to Hawaii. As we drove up the road I thought, oh I hope it's okay, I hope it's okay. Well, at the end of a red dirt road, up the hill from the "main" road we landed at Jungle Song. I felt my heart open and my hopes answered. Jungle Song is located on beautiful grounds that for me were/are magical. Birds, river sounds, wind in the trees, mountains in the not-far-distance, truly I felt like I was come home to a place where I was truly meant to be.

Dawn greeted us warmly and showed us the place and then disappeared to let us discover her lovely three roomed beautiful place. As others have said, the beds were comfortable, the outdoor shower divine, the kitchen and other room delightful, AND there was a washer and dryer. I loved the colorful dishes, pillows and cool stuff that decorates the unit. I found the kitchen supplies good and the space easy to"be" in.

Due to a family situation that required using her landline, I came to know Dawn quite well and she is a warm and caring and delightful human being. I miss her.

The beaches are wonderful and close, Hanalei has great restaurants, ahh, but to sit on the porch and feel the air and see the mountains and smell the smells, tand to listen to the sounds, for me this was truly the vacation I dreamed of. I hated to leave and started saving to go back the day we come home. Aloha.
