Secret Falls Cottage - Waterfall!

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,200 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6-9)

Secret Falls Cottage is furnished and decorated to match the ambience of the mountains high above Cashiers, NC: natural, yet with the modern conveniences of home. You'll find a unique blend of rustic furniture, antiques, and traditional pieces enhancing the structure of the cottage itself, characterized by lots of wood and windows. With over 2100 square feet, three huge bedrooms and three full bathrooms, the cottage can easily accommodate two families or three couples!

A large covered porch is perfect for reading, relaxing, rocking, and sleeping to the soothing sounds of rushing water. Robinson Creek borders the three-acre grounds, and is great for wading, photography, or just quiet contemplation. The centerpiece of Secret Falls Cottage, of course, is a private 65-foot waterfall accessible by several pathways winding through lush rhododendron thickets. The pathway to the bottom of the falls is strenuous, but the path to the creek atop the falls is more moderate.

Play in the creek...look out over the distant mountains from the huge covered porch...fix a snack or a meal in the fully-equipped the snow fall...or get rested for the next day while listening to the roaring waterfall from your bedroom window.

Easy day trips include boating on nearby Lake Glenville, horseback riding at several venues, whitewater rafting, canoeing, antiquing, and more! It is only minutes from a major trailhead of Panthertown, one of the area's best-kept secrets!

Visiting Secret Falls Cottage is a great way to experience a true mountain vacation getaway, high up the mountain, accessed by winding roads in a more remote, peaceful neighborhood. You can imagine how the early settlers felt each morning as they awoke to the sounds of rushing water and the singing of birds - NOT the sound of traffic. Hiking down to the base of the waterfall on the steep path is an adventure that will send you back in time before everything was covered in pavement.

NOTE: Home is high in mountains and involves some travel on winding gravel roads.

Great place to get away from it all!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our weekend at the cottage celebrating our anniversary. It was quiet and secluded making it a great getaway from the city. Did not mind at all having no internet. The kitchen has basic cooking supplies and house was very clean. The waterfall was absolutely gorgeous and completely private. The trail down is a little rough if you are not a hiker. Listening to the waterfall from large deck was so relaxing and tranquil. Getting there for us in a jeep was no problem. The long gravel road is a rough ride if you travel in a small car. But well worth the trek for a sacluded little treasure. if you want to be off the grid and away from it all, this is the place.

Great getaway and disconnect

Great time. Jetted tub is great after a day of hiking. Very nice getaway with no cell service. The hike to the falls is tough but oh so worth it... Had a great time.

Secluded, Cozy and Adventurous

  • 5 of 5

I recently stayed here with my husband, aunt, disabled mother and dog. We loved it! The photos don't do it justice. As others have mentioned, the road to the cottage is a little tricky to navigate in the dark. Although we didn't have cell service, the maps app could still track us which helped when we took a wrong turn halfway up. Weaving through the mountains was a fun adventure I wouldn't want to do without. Although my mother couldn't leave the house, she loved the sound of the waterfall from the porch. The highlight really was the waterfall. We took the steep and slippery (with leaves and mud) climb down the mountain. It didn't take long and the ropes tied to the trees were super helpful. Our dog continued to race up and down the hill as we were climbing - she was in heaven! The kitchen is well stocked, a few games in the cabinet, cute decor and spacious rooms. The trip up the mountain takes a bit of time but there's so much beauty to look at along the way. It's also close to a few day-trip waterfall explorations in nearby cities. If there was anything to be disgruntled it was that we were accompanied by a little creature at 3am during our stay. While it did keep my aunt up the rest of the night with the bedroom light on I still feel this place deserves 5 stars. Don't be a's a cabin, in the mountains, in fall. If she had been a sound sleeper, we would have never known.

Relaxing, beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

We rented this lovely home 3 years ago & liked it so much we decided to rent it again this year. The hike to the falls is a bit strenuous but well worth it if you're able. The path to the creek is an easy, short walk. We took our chairs & sat in the creek. Walked up the creek to another amazing fall & swam in swimming hole. Vanessa has every thing you need to prepare meals in the kitchen. Took our UTV & explored the area. Very relaxing.

Awesome house in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We spent two nights here after three in Gatlinburg this past week. What a difference. We enjoyed our short time so much. The house is great, kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook meals at home.

The climb down to the waterfall was part of the fun in itself. Thank you for having ropes to guide you. Found it pretty easy. The house was very clean, not like Gatlinburg's cabin. All the amenities of the house make it very easy to stay put and enjoy a vacation away from the city and Internet.

The directions to the house were good. We made one wrong turn, but it was my fault. I certainly would not want to do it at night, though. There's two ways to get there, and we went up one way and left the other. Both were pretty easy to do, and it was also fun.

We've rented vacation homes in lots of places, and this was a bargain for what you get, especially if you're looking for a rental that you plan to spend most of your time in the rental.

We never saw another car once we got off the paved roads. It felt like we had the mountain to ourselves. There is a landline in the house for an emergency. Another nice touch is the icemaker was full by the time we got there. The ping pong table is an added feature that was good too. And we were able to bring our dog. The beds were comfortable, and the living room furniture too. The satellite TV worked perfect. I couldn't get the fireplace to come on, but I'm sure that's my fault, and I didn't try too hard anyway.

Secret Falls Cottage

  • 1 of 5

We rented this cabin a week and a half ago. The friends we were going with arrived earlier than we did and had trouble with the directions to find the cabin. We arrived later in the afternoon and had a very difficult time finding the cabin following the owner's directions. Our cell phones didn't work and the GPS didn't either so we felt completely isolated. Once you leave the paved road, you have about 3.5 miles of a one lane, dirt road. Very treacherous.

Fortunately we finally found it before it got dark. We found the kitchen in the cabin to be sparsely furnished and couldn't get the coffee maker to work. (It would be a good idea to leave instructions for the operation of all appliances.) Two of the couples have back problems, and found the mattresses on the beds to be very uncomfortable and lumpy as were the pillows. The showers in the bedrooms downstairs were not very clean. The towels looked like someone had spilt bleach on them.

We have friends who live in Cashiers who were going to come up and spend time with us, but with the difficulty we had in finding it, decided it too dangerous to come since their cells didn't work either and it was getting dark. On Friday, we decided this cabin just wasn't for us and found a place in Cashiers that was nicer and cheaper. We secured Secret Falls cottage and did everything we were told to do to close up the cottage. (The letter the owner sent out had some very terse instructions as to what could and couldn't be done at her cabin!) The owners were called and left a message saying we would not being staying. We have yet to hear anything from the owners. We would not recommend this cabin to others.

Owner's Response: I'm disappointed when guests don't enjoy my home, but I clearly disclose its characteristics in vrbo and materials sent to guests prior to a visit. These guests apparently expected a house right in town with cell phone service; however, my listing prominently states "visiting Secret Falls Cottage is a great way to experience a true mountain vacation getaway, high up the mountain, accessed by winding roads in a more remote, peaceful neighborhood. You can imagine how the early settlers must have felt each morning as they awoke to the sounds of rushing water and the singing of birds - NOT the sound of traffic." Just below is: "NOTE: Home is high in mountains and involves some travel on winding gravel roads." And below that:THEME keywords are Adventure and Away From It All. The most recent review (5 stars, by the way) is entitled "Loved being off the grid!!!!". My materials clearly disclose the distance to the house from town (15-20 minutes) and that cell phone service is unavailable. Guests who actually read the listing and info packet generally encounter no surprises. My directions are clear - hundreds have used them and complimented me for their accuracy. Anyone arriving in daytime should have had no trouble. I am normally very quick to respond to problems or questions; however, I was myself traveling in an area with spotty cell phone reception (typical in the mountains, as most people know) so it was a few hours later when I received the complaint call, and by that time I also had a second message stating the guests had left. Yes, these guests have not heard back from me...I respond to courteous calls but ignore rude, sarcastic and insulting calls. Rather than reporting the broken coffeepot and allowing me to replace it the same day, one guest's message stated the coffeepot was broken so he guessed he would send out for coffee and send me the bill. He made a wisecrack about the lack of cell phone service, and other snide remarks. The next message said they had left because the home was too hard to find and the guests with back trouble didn't find the beds comfortable. Again, this is the first complaint I have received about the beds and I am sorry they were not found adequate. I immediately had another coffeemaker delivered. Further, the next guests reported that the kitchen was the best furnished rental kitchen they had ever had, so you just cannot please everyone. I try to make things nice for my guests.
