Secret Falls Cottage - Waterfall!

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,200 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6-9)

Secret Falls Cottage is furnished and decorated to match the ambience of the mountains high above Cashiers, NC: natural, yet with the modern conveniences of home. You'll find a unique blend of rustic furniture, antiques, and traditional pieces enhancing the structure of the cottage itself, characterized by lots of wood and windows. With over 2100 square feet, three huge bedrooms and three full bathrooms, the cottage can easily accommodate two families or three couples!

A large covered porch is perfect for reading, relaxing, rocking, and sleeping to the soothing sounds of rushing water. Robinson Creek borders the three-acre grounds, and is great for wading, photography, or just quiet contemplation. The centerpiece of Secret Falls Cottage, of course, is a private 65-foot waterfall accessible by several pathways winding through lush rhododendron thickets. The pathway to the bottom of the falls is strenuous, but the path to the creek atop the falls is more moderate.

Play in the creek...look out over the distant mountains from the huge covered porch...fix a snack or a meal in the fully-equipped the snow fall...or get rested for the next day while listening to the roaring waterfall from your bedroom window.

Easy day trips include boating on nearby Lake Glenville, horseback riding at several venues, whitewater rafting, canoeing, antiquing, and more! It is only minutes from a major trailhead of Panthertown, one of the area's best-kept secrets!

Visiting Secret Falls Cottage is a great way to experience a true mountain vacation getaway, high up the mountain, accessed by winding roads in a more remote, peaceful neighborhood. You can imagine how the early settlers felt each morning as they awoke to the sounds of rushing water and the singing of birds - NOT the sound of traffic. Hiking down to the base of the waterfall on the steep path is an adventure that will send you back in time before everything was covered in pavement.

NOTE: Home is high in mountains and involves some travel on winding gravel roads.

Great Getaway. No Technology.

  • 4 of 5

This is a great home. Also has a lot of potential to be even more. I gave 4 stars because it is exactly as described. Be sure to read all of the reviews and decide if this home is for you.

There is TV but no internet. No cell phone service unless you drive down the mountain. So be prepared for that. Also come during the day because arriving at night will be near impossible, as described in other reviews. it's tough to find but once you find it, GREAT!

We got the snow we hoped for and had an excellent New Years vacation.

My only real complaint is that less than half of the lights in the home had working bulbs if they had bulbs at all. (there was a lamp in a bedroom with three light sockets but no bulbs in it). There were literally 22 lights that worked out of the 44 light sockets that I counted in the entire home. The gas firelog does not work ... just as described in 3 other reviews on this site from the past 18 months. I called the owner and she suggested to call the property manager who lived close but this was not feasible with our schedule. Very nice and attentive though when I called.

The trek down the mountain to the creek would be impossible without the ropes provided. It was a great experience though and well worth the effort to see the creek and waterfall. You can hear it from the porch and see a little bit of it too. Very nice. My dog, wife and 3 young children (not the easiest for the 18 month old) really enjoyed the challenge but it is a challenge.

Finish the downstairs floor and fix the hot tub because there is a lot of potential down there. My girls did attempt to play some table tennis. On the main floor: Common living space was excellent. 2 main floor bedrooms were large and clean with separate bathrooms. Upstairs bedroom even bigger with a separate sitting area with a small TV from the 1900s but I truly loved this space and this bathroom was also excellent.

Would definitely recommend as long as you are trying to get away from your phone and emails. May want to bring some light bulbs though. If those above recommendations are performed expect the nightly rates to double!

nice comfortable mountain cottage

  • 4 of 5

very comfortable mountain cottage with deck and nice mountain view. loved listening to the waterfall. I did not read carefully enough about the drive up. If it were just me and my husband it would have been fine, but we had my 89 yr old mother with us, and our sons and one wife and baby came up in the dark. Without cell service this was scary. One of the days we were there, going back to the cabin, we made a wrong turn up a very steep hill and car start to spin and we could go no further. Like I said with no cell service this was frightening. we had to walk supporting my mother down the hill. my husband eventually got the vehicle backed down the hill.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad your wrong turn experience turned out OK! Mountain roads CAN be tricky, especially in the dark. Although the directions I provide are very, very specific and accurate, minimizing the chances of a wrong turn, with the unfamiliar terrain those turns can creep up on again I'm thankful everything turned out well. Unfortunately, remote and pristine vacation locales often come with no cell service. Great for relaxation...not so great in emergencies!

Great home. Owners keep it nice for guests.

Crazy drive in the dark to the property! Beautiful common area, plenty of space. We had a family of 6 and it was perfect. Bedrooms were comfortable, but dirty carpets. However, it is pet friendly and I expected what I got. We decided not to bring our pets since we would be out most of the day Saturday, but dogs would have loved it!
