Nice place, nice stay but had a few shortcomings

  • 3 of 5

My wife and I had ultimately had a wonderful stay in this carriage house, but we wanted to give a heads up on a few things we wish we would known about. I'll summarize in a pro/con list:

Pros:

-Beautiful property in Watercolor community with a balcony that overlooks a street and then undeveloped forest land beyond

-Bikes provided, beach was less than a 5 min bike ride away; this was super awesome biking around Watercolor and 30A

-Responsive owner, responsive and capable concierge who quickly answered questions and resolved the wifi issue we were having (a signal booster was installed that enabled us to get 1.5 Mbps internet speed where previously we weren't getting anything inside at all). The internet signal booster worked just well enough for our Chromecast to work so we could stream Netflix at night.

-Very proximal to the Frog Pool down the street

-Access to outdoor fireplace and outdoor grilling area below the carriage house (shared with main house)

Cons:

-Wifi (see above, although this was improved for us with the booster it was still weak)

-Bed pillows: bring your own. We were very thankful we had. The ones provided were very sad looking.

-Kitchen: it says fully equipped, but don't expect a blender. It did feature the bare essentials though.

-Couch/linens/towels: we noticed quite a few stains. Everything appeared as if it had been laundered/cleaned, but the bed sheets, some towels, and couch had some stains.

-TV: it had cable, but it was plugged directly into the back of the tv with no box. So there was no guide or HD. Not a big deal since you're at the beach, but when the wifi sucks these shortcomings become frustrating.

Thermostat: only went down to 71. We sleep at 69 degrees usually, so this was a problem the first night. Joe the concierge fixed this the next day, and afterwards it would go down to 68. This was really annoying that we had to ask to put the temp below 70.

Overall a nice stay, but I would advise if you stay here to err on the side of bringing anything and everything unless it explicitly states that it offers it. And even then, as in the case of the wifi and pillows, you may be a little disappointed. But hey you're still at the beach and in Watercolor so it's still great. We're undecided as of now if we would stay here again.

Beautiful place. Nice decor. Needed a few things- like can opener and wine glasses.

Outside grill did not come on- appeared to have gas but no new batteries to make the starter come on- very nice little place. Enjoyed Watercolor once we figured it out. Would be great to have a map of the area in the unit.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the feedback. That is a great suggestion to have a map for the folks that haven't been to Watercolor yet. We will put one in the carriage house. Unfortunately the push starters in this coastal weather are very unreliable and it is something we constantly battle with. We will get a small sign up to instruct folks to use the torch lighter to light the grill.

relaxing getaway for 2

  • 5 of 5

The carriage house was a wonderful relaxing place to stay. The house was clean and beautifully designed. The upper deck looked out onto a national forest while the smell of sweet honeysuckle filled the air. It was very quiet and calming both in the morning and evenings. Below deck was a fire pit, lounge seating and a large grill which we made sure to use. There were bikes to use on property which afforded us the ability to not have to get in the car once we arrived. We had easy access to both the beach club and the frog pool- both were great. I've stayed at Watercolor before with larger groups and really liked the location of this property the best as it's tucked away and you can't see neighbors on all sides. Definitely worth a return trip!

Nice getaway place for two

  • 5 of 5

The carriage house has fun, lively decor, including a comfortable bedroom and a nicely equipped kitchen/ sitting area. The high ceilings are a nice touch. The house was clean and well kept. While we didn't use the outdoor patio (at the base of the stairs, under the overhanging porch) it looked like a good place to hang out and chat. An outdoor shower is available there as well.

This carriage house is in a great location, near the back of Watercolor. A state forest is located right across the road, so you can sit on the porch and "chill" - reading or watching for birds or other wildlife if you wish. It's neither as noisy nor as heavily traveled as some of the streets closer to 30A. Yet, if you want to visit the restaurants, shops, Watercolor Beach Club, or Watercolor Inn, the bike ride (the owner's bikes were available for our use) across the Western Lake footbridge is a quick 5 minutes. Seaside is just a few minutes further on the bike. The Watercolor "Frog" Pool is just a few hundred yards away, if you prefer a quieter pool scene than that found at the Beach Club. There is an abundance of restaurants within a short drive. Also, the drive to the nearby supermarket is a quick five minutes, bypassing the traffic congestion in Seaside when you "head out the back way."

The owner was very helpful - he worked with us when our originally requested dates weren't available. Also, the concierge service interaction (getting the keys, Beach Club passes, etc.) was trouble free.

Overall, this is a great place for a couple to spend some "R & R" time - I would definitely recommend it to friends.
