About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 3.5 Baths (Sleeps 10)

The perfect combination of private retreat and convenient location -- five minutes from the Boothbay Harbor Village shops and restaurants, the Harbor and Boating, the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, and the new 18-hole Country Club, open to the public.

The essence of Maine captured in a private estate setting; waterbirds calling in the cove, towering pine trees, flowering landscape surround this extraordinary home. This two-story Maine lodge and four acres of gardens lead down to 1,300 feet of rocky shore and dock.

Whether lazy or active, you will find ARDEN warm and cozy, and a perfect vacation spot for a celebrating a special occasion for two or a gathering of friends and family. Like Maine itself, it offers a wonderful sense of life as it should be. There is even a mooring out in the cove for the dedicated boater.

Featured in New England Coastal Living and Maine Design publications, you feel immediately at home from the moment you turn into the driveway. This light filled traditional shingle house has massive stone chimneys, double height windows, and large screened porch. This classic Maine lodge features barn wood beams, stone floors, and is filled with antiques and art.

Every convenience and state of the art system make this home comfortable and efficient. The use of antique doors, hardware, European design and furnishings makes the house feel as if families have been gathering and vacationing together for many generations. Whether you wander in the woods, enjoy the flower gardens, see what is ripe in the garden, hop along the rocks on the shore or find a spot to read or sun: you are always relaxed and absorb the pleasure of sheer leisure.

The large private dock and protected tidal cove just off Townsend Gut are another magnet for staying put from early morning till night. Watch the light on the water, savor early morning coffee, lazy sunset drinks, or night-time stargazing. Or when you build up your energy, go kayaking, take a brisk swim, or go clamming at low tide.

The house and gardens were designed working closely with prominent Boston architects and landscape designers incorporating barn timbers, a granite fireplace, wide-board floors.-- and even a massive 15 ft barn door, and two felled trees. This two year labor of love was completed in 2005 by a team of fine Maine craftsmen.

The romantic master bedroom and sitting area overlook the cove and a two-story stone bathroom is complete with a massive granite walk in rain shower. The main floor includes a double height living room with a magnificent stone fireplace. The gourmet cooks dream kitchen and two-story dining room overlook from the hall above and a large cherry dining table table and Windsor chairs invite leisurely dining and hours of good conversation.

There is also a comfortable sitting room and adjacent library with comfy seating, wood burning stove, and media cabinet. The end of the house opens onto a screened-in porch with ceiling fan and adarondak rockers for conversation, quiet retreat, and enjoying Maine evening breezes and views of the water. The laundry room, pantry, and guest bath complete the first floor all leading off a large two story hall/gallery with clear-story windows above.

The second floor consists of three spacious, light filled bedrooms with vaulted ceilings and beautiful views of the water and surrounding landscape. Two of the bedrooms share a spa-like bathroom suite featuring a sauna and walk-in rain shower highlighted by contemporary Italian fixtures. The third 'double' bedroom is a self contained suite featuring one area with a double bed, a separate with area with two single beds divided by a full bathroom. Antiques and soft woven rugs everywhere look and feel like you have indeed returned to the home you remember from your childhood.

When you are ready to venture out, a five minute drive will take you to downtown Boothbay Harbor--quintessential Maine seacoast harbor where you can explore the eclectic mix of shops and galleries, get in a round of golf, and take in a live performance. You can experience the working waterfront and fleet of fishing boats, enjoy the annual parade of schooners, or get out on the water yourself for a sail, a whale watch, a lighthouse tour, or even a day trip to Monhegan Island where artists have summered for generations to paint.

In between you can hike on one of the Conservation nature trails or enjoy a fresh lobster feast dockside. Heading north, a five minute car ride will bring you to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. Just taking a drive in itself allows one to take in the natural beauty of coastal Maine and the opportunity to discover the many still little changed villages and harbors.

Why Abigail Friedland chose Boothbay Harbor Area

Arden is a place of respite, leisure, living in the moment, enjoying the beauty and tranquility of Maine and most especially for gathering of family and friends. It is my pleasure to share this with you and fondest hope that it will be for you a magical, energizing, and restorative time surrounded by Maine’s beautiful woods, water, and sky that you will remember and treasure as it always is for me.

We chose the name Arden from the Arden Woods which was the setting for As You like It. Shakespeare compared the Arden Woods with Eden -- a magical place where people are transformed through self-discovery and finding love. For our family and friends Arden has indeed been an apt name. This four-acre land, gardens, and woods feels like a special place. Friendship has been celebrated, children and grandchildren have gathered and played. We have laughed, read, rested, feasted, explored, and spent many hours playing games and talking in winter and summer, in sunshine, fog, rain and snow.

Most especially we have all been embraced and nurtured by the warmth, beauty, and sturdiness of this house.

What makes this house unique

Arden is our family retreat and gathering spot and is filled with our family furniture, photos, and heritage which we have collected and conserved things which have been passed down though multiple generations of our family. We love it here and are nourished by it and have enjoyed many wonderful occasions over the 10 years we have owned and completely rebuilt Arden. We hope you will have similar wonderful memories with your family and friends and get great pleasure, as we do, from being surrounded by nature and the traditional materials and craftsmanship that grounds us and ties us to this place and to one another.

It was so wonderful ....Making reservations for Summer 2018!!

  • 5 of 5

One of a kind! A beautiful and unique setting with a wonderful sense of privacy. Gorgeous landscaping ; we loved all the different seating areas to take in the great water views. We had everything we needed to enjoy our time at Arden House: wood for the campfire and fireplace, kayaks, gas and charcoal grills, large gas-fired lobster pot, well-equipped kitchen, Wifi, nice TV and sound system, etc. Towels and linens were in good shape. Incredible architecture and building materials...beautifully done. Lots of interesting artifacts throughout the house. Arden House offered "comfortable-elegant" space for our whole extended family: 86 year old Great Grandmother, our sons and their wives, our 10 month old grandson and ourselves... an added bonus; my brother-in-law and his wife rented the carriage house. We can't wait to come back.!

Absolutely spectacular and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

What a stunning house!! Enjoyed everything about the house and property. Never expected anything to look like the picures, but WOW!! The furnishings were amazing, the entire house was unbelievably beautiful and a place where I would love to live.

So much space and tranquil areas both inside and outside the house. You could be alone if you so chose.

We enjoyed the firepit each evening and the inside fireplace on a colder night. We even cooked lobster in the gas lobster pot, which we had never done before!! Everything we needed was right there....and the kitchen had everything we could possibly need.

Also so close to so many beautiful areas to visit.

Beautiful, beautiful house and property...sooo serene... we were quite sad to leave. Thanks for a great vacation!!

Relaxation at its best!!

  • 5 of 5

Wow!! Where to start. First Abigail was amazing to work with arranging rental. She was friendly and prompt. Jim, the caretaker, was always available and accommodating. The house is spectacular. We enjoyed every part of the house and property. Our favorites were the kayaks, the producing blueberry bushes, screened in porch, well appointed kitchen and the beautiful light that flowed into the house. We couldn't have asked for a more relaxing, wonderful vacation.

Enchanting Place

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed in many interesting and delightful VRBOs in Europe (Paris, Florence, and Valencia) and in the U.S. (from Tucson to Cambridge, MA), and Arden House is one of our favorites, and certainly the most luxurious and gorgeously furnished. Set on a spectacular, private, wooded, tidal bay 3 acre lot, the house, with its many windows, made us feel as though we were truly in the Maine woods. Each room in the house is beautifully decorated with fabulous art and antiques and comfortable furniture. All the rooms are spacious and beautifully laid out, and there are lots of private spaces for reading or conversations. The kitchen is large with space for several cooks, and equipped with large appliances and all the cooking tools, dishes, glasses, etc., someone who loves to cook would ever want. The living rooms and the screened porches are both large and cozy, the bedrooms are spacious with comfortable beds, and the bathrooms are thoughtfully and beautifully set up. Each of these rooms has its own striking design.

The house was spotlessly clean when we arrived, The caretaker, who let us in, was helpful getting us oriented, and patient with a couple of small things we couldn't figure out. He was also knowledgeable and entertaining. Abigail, who took our reservations, was lovely --warm, helpful, and efficient. We liked that Boothbay Harbor is only a few minutes away for groceries and restaurants, and we enjoyed tide pooling on the shores nearby.

The Carriage House Apartment is adjacent, but that space is separated and oriented in such a way that we barely knew someone was there.

In our last couple of days, we met the woman who owns and designed Arden House. She was so hospitable, friendly, and knowledgeable; having the opportunity to talk with her made our stay even better.

In all, we spent a wonderful week at Arden House. We went home refreshed and contented, with great memories of our stay in Maine. We hope to return to Arden House soon!
