About Nancy & Ken Kratky

The owners, Nancy and Ken Kratky, both grew up in Eastern Nebraska. In 1996 they moved to Colorado, got married in Hidden Valley, Colorado and honeymooned in Estes Park. In 2001 they returned to Nebraska and stayed eleven years. During that time they continued to return to Colorado multiple times per year, always visiting Estes Park, and always casually looking at real estate property with the dream of ownership some day.

In December of 2011, while on a vacation to celebrate their December birthdays, they came across this quaint little cottage in a historic little area for sale. It needed lots of attention, but they saw it's potential, and knew they could give it new life to fulfill their dream of a rustic mountain get-away. They put in an offer and the offer was accepted on Ken's Birthday! It became a 'labor of love'! They now reside in Longmont, CO.

Black Bear Cottage received it's name after a very large adult black bear climbed up the apple tree next to the cottage in the middle of the night to feast on apples! When we started to make noise, the bear got so excited, it had a difficult time trying to get back down off the roof!! The next day the apple tree was cut down... And our bicycle-riding bear was placed on the tree stump to memorialize the event!

Nancy & Ken Kratky purchased this cabin in 2011

Delightful!

  • 5 of 5

For 3 friends, local to Colorado, that needed a short getaway, this place was PERFECT! Our Colorado weather brought us single degree temperatures on the day we arrived but as we walked in the front door, we were sold! It was so cozy and warm inside we decided to spend our first evening in. We spent most of our time cozied up near the fireplace and under the super soft throws that were available. We ate most of our meals in and found everything we needed. Beds were comfortable and warm and there were 2 closets in one room which made it nice to store our personal items separately. Nancy was always available when we had a question and even took the time to give us road updates on the day of arrival as we had had a lot of snow. When we did venture out, we were almost across the street from the famous Stanley Hotel and a very short drive into town. The Kratkys even leave a discount card for local restaurants for your use while you stay. They really have thought of everything. We were greeted by a lone deer one afternoon just off of our porch. Priceless! I highly recommend staying here if your plans are to head to Estes Park. It is on the smaller side so 3 people was the limit but it was perfect for our plans. We will definitely come back!

A New Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

I couldn't have been more pleased with Black Bear Cottage and our experience working with the Kratkys. Every query was answered quickly and the reservation process couldn't have gone more smoothly.

The cottage is beautifully restored, decorated and comfortably furnished. Every detail has been taken care of. I've stayed in many rentals and this is one of the nicest by far. So many people cut corners anymore but not the Kratkys. They even had a Christmas tree set up and had decorated for the holidays. What a nice touch!

I look forward to staying at Black Bear in the future!

Beautiful Cabin in Estes Park

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful cabin in Estes Park was a gem! Refurbished and decorated, it was tastefully appointed and equipped. The kitchen facilities were great, internet access and television were excellent. The deck provided outdoor seating, and sitting in front of the fireplace was our favorite after a day exploring in the park. We loved our getaway and the cabin was located for easy access to town, shopping, and RMNP.

Perfect Cozy Cabin

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I went to Estes for a little getaway in the mountains. And this cabin was pretty much perfect.

When we arrived, there were deer sitting by the bench just hanging out. The inside of the cabin has pretty much everything you'll need. They even left some hot chocolate packets and cookies for us.

The beds were comfortable, and everything was very clean. We took advantage of the fireplace and the patio.

Also, it's just a small 4 min walk down to the middle of everything. Literally, less than 5 minutes. So you can walk or drive. The choice is yours. Make sure to check out the Moon Kat Tea Cafe. It was hands down our favorite place to eat.

The only small tiny thing is I would suggest bringing a hair dryer. The one in the cabin stopped working. It wasn't a big deal though. Nancy was very fast to respond when we let her know. We couldn't have stayed at a better place.
