About Nancy & Ken Kratky

The owners, Nancy and Ken Kratky, both grew up in Eastern Nebraska. In 1996 they moved to Colorado, got married in Hidden Valley, Colorado and honeymooned in Estes Park. In 2001 they returned to Nebraska and stayed eleven years. During that time they continued to return to Colorado multiple times per year, always visiting Estes Park, and always casually looking at real estate property with the dream of ownership some day.

In December of 2011, while on a vacation to celebrate their December birthdays, they came across this quaint little cottage in a historic little area for sale. It needed lots of attention, but they saw it's potential, and knew they could give it new life to fulfill their dream of a rustic mountain get-away. They put in an offer and the offer was accepted on Ken's Birthday! It became a 'labor of love'! They now reside in Longmont, CO.

Black Bear Cottage received it's name after a very large adult black bear climbed up the apple tree next to the cottage in the middle of the night to feast on apples! When we started to make noise, the bear got so excited, it had a difficult time trying to get back down off the roof!! The next day the apple tree was cut down... And our bicycle-riding bear was placed on the tree stump to memorialize the event!

Nancy & Ken Kratky purchased this cabin in 2011

Fabulous cottage in Estes Park

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this cabin for three nights and it was a great experience. It was comfortable and a good layout for two people. My husband has severe allergies and he did great in this property. I don't think there was a speck of dust in the place when we got there, the fireplace is a gas unit (no wood smell), and she didn't have any unnecessary smelly things sitting around. (You'd be surprised by how many places profess to care about people with allergies and then do something dumb like adding in fragrance to the place.). And, any normal household item we could possibly want or need was provided. I cook on vacation some and had all the implements I needed in the kitchen. Plus, we found tourist info that helped us plan our days.

A Very Nice And Comfortable Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had such a good time in Estes Park. Not only is the cottage just up the hill from the town, but it is also close to the entrance to RMNP. The cottage was very clean and had every little convenience you might need. And the bed was comfortable. too. We highly recommend the Black Bear Cottage.

Just as nice as other reviewers have said!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I really enjoyed our four-night stay at Black Bear Cottage. It is well stocked, very comfortable and in a great location. The little extras are nice. Like Netflix which my wife enjoyed when her chronic fatigue kept her from sightseeing. I'd forgotten my small flashlight but found, not one but two of them in the cottage! The information book was, indeed, very informative about the cottage and Estes Park and RMNP. We saved a few dollars using the Rocky Card at restaurants that gave discounts for using it. The communcations before, during and after our stay were prompt and made everything go smoothly.

I highly recommend Black Bear Cottage for your stay in Estes Park!

Cozy, Beautiful, Peaceful, Heavenly!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely enjoyed staying here! The cabin was extremely cozy! The weather was perfect so we were able to enjoy many of our meals on the deck. While eating we enjoyed the beautiful view, deer, elk, rabbits, and hummingbirds. The moment we opened the door we were in absolute awe! Nancy and Ken have done an amazing job with this cabin. Once you walk in it's hard to leave. It's very peaceful! A true home-away-from-home, but even better! It's heavenly!

Black Bear Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for a week and it was absolutely wonderful. It's a cozy and warm Cottage for two. Upon arrival, the first thing one notices is how clean and well taken care of the cottage is. The owners take pride in their cottage and have made sure that they have stocked everything you might need while staying in the cottage (minus food and personal toiletries of course). They have truly thought of everything. Other than that, all you have to do is show up and enjoy your visit! My husband and I will definitely be back! Thank you for a great visit! ☺️
