About Nancy & Ken Kratky

The owners, Nancy and Ken Kratky, both grew up in Eastern Nebraska. In 1996 they moved to Colorado, got married in Hidden Valley, Colorado and honeymooned in Estes Park. In 2001 they returned to Nebraska and stayed eleven years. During that time they continued to return to Colorado multiple times per year, always visiting Estes Park, and always casually looking at real estate property with the dream of ownership some day.

In December of 2011, while on a vacation to celebrate their December birthdays, they came across this quaint little cottage in a historic little area for sale. It needed lots of attention, but they saw it's potential, and knew they could give it new life to fulfill their dream of a rustic mountain get-away. They put in an offer and the offer was accepted on Ken's Birthday! It became a 'labor of love'! They now reside in Longmont, CO.

Black Bear Cottage received it's name after a very large adult black bear climbed up the apple tree next to the cottage in the middle of the night to feast on apples! When we started to make noise, the bear got so excited, it had a difficult time trying to get back down off the roof!! The next day the apple tree was cut down... And our bicycle-riding bear was placed on the tree stump to memorialize the event!

Nancy & Ken Kratky purchased this cabin in 2011

September in Estes Park

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at this charming cabin in Estes Park! It was very clean and fully stocked with everything we could want or need for our week long stay. This trip was a celebration of our 30th anniversary. We spent every day in RMNP, hiking and enjoying the wildlife. It was so convenient and so nice to come back to a cozy cabin and comfy bed each night.

Mother/Daughter Weekend in Estes Park

  • 5 of 5

My daughter (Samantha - from Denver) and I (Susan - from Arizona) came to this peaceful cabin over the Labor Day weekend for a mother/daughter weekend. We found the cabin to be extremely clean, well-stocked, comfy, and a great location. We walked several times down to Estes Park for eating, shopping, jeep tour, music, etc. I am very thankful for the great communication we had before the trip and also during that weekend. One morning, while having coffee on the deck, we saw deer walk right in front of us. They bedded down right next to the cabin so we had quite the entertainment for over three hours. I am very appreciate for our wonderful, blessed and memorable stay at this cabin. I highly recommend this as an excellent place to stay. The fireplace was well used in the early mornings and late evenings. It created a warm & relaxing atmosphere. Please consider this cabin as you will not be disappointed. I have stayed at many VRBO's and this was above and beyond excellent. Thanks again. Susan - Sunny Arizona

Relaxed Return to Estes Park

  • 5 of 5

Great hosts. This is a very comfortable cottage, centrally located for a visit to Estes Park. My wife and I had a lovely time in Estes Park. We celebrated our 40th anniversary here and enjoyed visits with old friends. Twin Owls Restaurant, just up the hill provided us with a wonderful dinner with special treatment by the owner Thad. We chose to drive down to town and park behind Ed's/ the Wheel, opposite from Oppa. We strolled along the river and Lake Estes. The walk back up the hill was not an option for me so a drive down to town was necessary. The Black Bear Cottage was nicely furnished and comfortable. Would recommend to anyone.

Love, love, love Black Bear Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

The owners have done a beautiful job with renovations and have thought of everything possible to make the experience memorable. This is by far one of the nicest cottages we have ever had the pleasure to rent. If we ever return to the area, we will plan our trip around the cottage’s available dates. It is obvious they have put thoughtful love into this amazing place!!!
