About Nancy & Ken Kratky

The owners, Nancy and Ken Kratky, both grew up in Eastern Nebraska. In 1996 they moved to Colorado, got married in Hidden Valley, Colorado and honeymooned in Estes Park. In 2001 they returned to Nebraska and stayed eleven years. During that time they continued to return to Colorado multiple times per year, always visiting Estes Park, and always casually looking at real estate property with the dream of ownership some day.

In December of 2011, while on a vacation to celebrate their December birthdays, they came across this quaint little cottage in a historic little area for sale. It needed lots of attention, but they saw it's potential, and knew they could give it new life to fulfill their dream of a rustic mountain get-away. They put in an offer and the offer was accepted on Ken's Birthday! It became a 'labor of love'! They now reside in Longmont, CO.

Black Bear Cottage received it's name after a very large adult black bear climbed up the apple tree next to the cottage in the middle of the night to feast on apples! When we started to make noise, the bear got so excited, it had a difficult time trying to get back down off the roof!! The next day the apple tree was cut down... And our bicycle-riding bear was placed on the tree stump to memorialize the event!

Nancy & Ken Kratky purchased this cabin in 2011

Great getaway

  • 5 of 5

Black Bear Cottage is a great place to stay in Estes Park. We recently spent a week there for what was our third stay. It is such a welcoming place. Everything is well-maintained and it is equipped with most things anyone would need. The location is so convenient to RMNP and the Estes Park downtown. If you want to be in a quiet area and have great views, this is the place to stay.

Beautiful Cozy Cabin!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is the perfect place for your mountain get away! The cottage had everything you would need to make your stay perfect and if you had any additional needs Nancy and Ken were just a phone call away. Even though the cabin is equipped with Wi-Fi, smart tv's and DVD player, we enjoyed quiet evenings curled up by the fireplace playing games and doing puzzles, which were all furnished. It truly was the perfect mountain cabin! We are already planning a trip back 😊?

Perfect cottage for a couple!

  • 5 of 5

We were thrilled with Black Bear Cottage. It is generously furnished and impeccably clean. Although a bit tricky to find at first, it is conveniently located near downtown and to a grocery store. We will definitely stay here again the next time we're in Estes!

Perfect Stay in Estes Park!

  • 5 of 5

Black Bear Cottage is wonderful - comfy, cozy, yet very spacious for a couple. Nancy and Ken have obviously walked through and asked themselves, "What else can we do to make this more comfortable and welcoming for our guests?" And then they did everything they could think of! The cottage was immaculate and the attention to details amazing. The location is perfect - close to Rocky Mountain Park and close to town, yet removed enough to feel quiet and serene. And Nancy and Ken were a delight to work with - very flexible and accommodating. We could not have asked for a more perfect stay. We would recommend Black Bear Cottage in a heartbeat!

A hidden gem!

  • 5 of 5

While Black Bear Cabin was a little hard to find in the dark, it was worth the effort! It was cozy, quaint, and exceptionally clean. The living area’s original fireplace has been adapted to accommodate a tasteful gas log, and the cabin has been updated with all the modern conveniences while retaining its original charm. The owners have thought of everything. We will definitely be back.
