About Nancy & Ken Kratky

The owners, Nancy and Ken Kratky, both grew up in Eastern Nebraska. In 1996 they moved to Colorado, got married in Hidden Valley, Colorado and honeymooned in Estes Park. In 2001 they returned to Nebraska and stayed eleven years. During that time they continued to return to Colorado multiple times per year, always visiting Estes Park, and always casually looking at real estate property with the dream of ownership some day.

In December of 2011, while on a vacation to celebrate their December birthdays, they came across this quaint little cottage in a historic little area for sale. It needed lots of attention, but they saw it's potential, and knew they could give it new life to fulfill their dream of a rustic mountain get-away. They put in an offer and the offer was accepted on Ken's Birthday! It became a 'labor of love'! They now reside in Longmont, CO.

Black Bear Cottage received it's name after a very large adult black bear climbed up the apple tree next to the cottage in the middle of the night to feast on apples! When we started to make noise, the bear got so excited, it had a difficult time trying to get back down off the roof!! The next day the apple tree was cut down... And our bicycle-riding bear was placed on the tree stump to memorialize the event!

Nancy & Ken Kratky purchased this cabin in 2011

Hard to Find, But Worth It

  • 4 of 5

It took us three tries to find the "road" to the cottage. Think one-lane meandering gravel driveway past 3 other houses. Remember to duck as you enter if you're 6'4". OUCH. Well-appointed interior and comfy bed. Kitchen very nice size, modern, and well-supplied. See if you can find 74 black bears at the cottage! Loved the personal touches.

Perfect place to spend a few days and enjoy the mountains!

  • 5 of 5

Coming to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park is like coming home for us. Booking with the Black Bear Cottage was the perfect decision for this trip. We had decided to run the Rocky Mountain National Park 5k and Half Marathon. This was my first and we wanted a good base for our stay. After spending many, many hours on VRBO trying to find the perfect place my wife and I stumbled across the Black Bear Cottage independently and sent each other a message saying "check this out." We knew immediately that this was the place that we had to stay. The cottage was everything we imagined and more. Very quickly we heard from Nancy with all the details we needed for the stay. Her detail truly impressed me as I work in the hospitality industry. As we were driving into Estes we received a text from Nancy that the cottage was ready early. When we got there it was everything that as advertised. There was a nice welcome binder with all the information that we needed to know along with some helpful hints and tips about the local area. The restaurant tips in the book were perfect for the days that we didn't prepare our own food. The kitchen was nicely appointed and had everything we needed to successfully cook our meals for our stay. The bed and bedding were comfortable and the entire cottage seemed fresh and clean. The humming bird feeder directly outside of the dining table provided entertainment both in the morning and evening with the hummingbirds feeding. Next time we return back to Estes we will be sure to stay at the Black Bear Cottage!
