Vacation in an ancient circular dwelling with all comforts of home

Acadia Yurts offers visitors the most unique way to stay on Mount Desert Island. Seven fun, eco-friendly Yurts will bring you as close to nature as camping, with all the amenities of home. Located on 5 acres of lovely wooded land, surrounded by Acadia National Park property, Acadia Yurts offer a peaceful retreat for your group (up to 4 guests per Yurt or larger yurt to accommodate up to 6 people). Acadia Yurts is also ideal for large groups traveling with accommodations for up to 32 people on 1 site.

A yurt is a tent-like circular fabric structure with a wood lattice frame that originated among the nomadic tribes in Asia. These permanent structures have thick canvas exterior walls that include reflective insulation so they can be used in all seasons. Acadia Yurts also has electric heat inside each yurt so that you can be comfortable during any season. Yurts are quickly becoming a new vacation experience that vacationers are enjoying throughout the US from cliff side views in California to ski lodges in Colorado. This is a memorable place to stay while enjoying the beauty of Acadia!

About Karen Roper

Aaron is an Maine native. He was born and raised across the bridge in Trenton and grew up attending local Bar Harbor schools. He has worked in the restaurant industry for the past 15+ years beginning as a prep cook in high school then moving toward general manager. Aaron's favorite extracurricular activity is learning all he can about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As often as he can he trains locally and loves sharing this passion with others.

Karen is a transplant. Originally from Chicago she made her way to Maine in 2009 and fell in love immediately. In Acadia she enjoys hiking, trail running, yoga, and long walks on the carriage roads. Karen teaches yoga during the summer months among some of Acadia's favorite vistas- Sand Beach, Cadillac Mountain, Parkman Mountain and ocean front in Bar Harbor. Karen is presently enrolled in massage school and will graduate April 2015 with hopes of sharing the gift of massage at Acadia Yurts.

As a couple we have done quite a bit of traveling and through that we have narrowed down the particular way we like to travel. The biggest factor for us is having a furnished kitchen in order to prepare health minded foods to nourish our bodies and support all our outdoor activities. The idea for Acadia Yurts has been brewing for quite some time. Friends of ours live off the grid in a yurt and we greatly appreciate the rustic, romantic feel of the yurt but wanted some of the comforts of home- running water, heat, electricity. From there Acadia Yurts was born. We deeply hope you enjoy our home as much as we do!!

Awesome Experience!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a week at Acadia Yurts! It is really a special place. The yurts were clean and had been equipped with all the essentials we needed. Comfy bed, great shower, and all the kitchen gadgets we needed. The owners are awesome...super communicative, organized and genuinely appear to want you to enjoy your stay on their property. Location is great - close to town and all the Acadia spots we wanted to hit. We will return.

10 Year Wedding Anniversary Trip

  • 5 of 5

The yurt was very well kept up, appeared to be brand new, although it was two years old. Loved the adjustable flow of the water level in the shower - plenty of water pressure and hot water! The bed was comfortable and we slept well. Adjustable thermostat to easily regulate temperature! I loved the skylight in the yurt and all of the details that were well thought out! Aaron and Karen were easy to communicate with and cared about our stay!

Our first glamping experience and it was one of the best trips we've ever had!

  • 5 of 5

We travelled to Acadia for the very first time with our 17-month-old and we couldn't ask for a better experience! The property and the yurts are just charming! The interior is very modern and comfy with all the amenities you can access at a hotel stay. I would actually argue that the amenities are even better than a regular stay at a hotel. You can tell the owners, Karen and Aaron, had put a lot of thoughtful details into the yurts and are just great, genuine folks that want to make your stay is as perfect as possible. The yurts are conveniently located in Southwest Harbor in Mt. Desert Island. It is close to many hiking trails and piers and is merely a short 15 to 20 minute drive to Bar Harbor. We stayed at the Acadia Yurts for a whole week and we did not want to go back. Our little one had such a blast. Her face lit up when she first stepped into the yurt and you can tell she just fit in immediately as if it was her second home. If I had the choice, I can definitely see myself living there forever.

Thank you, Karen!!! Thank you, Aaron!!!

Love the yurt, just know what you're getting

  • 4 of 5

This was our first experience with a yurt and it was amazing. The size was perfect for my wife and I and I loved the fact that it DOES NOT have a TV. The community firepit allowed the making of new friends in the cozy confines of an outdoor campfire (shoutout to Will...great meeting you buddy!).

Being a yurt, there are some things that must be taken in to consideration. First, if you fancy yourself as a gourmet cook and plan on making elaborate meals, go elsewhere. The kitchen is functional and allows for the fueling of oneself to hike and enjoy the amazing sites of Acadia.

Although the yurts are advertised as pet friendly, note that the fees can be substantial. The cost for taking our two poodles increased the total cost of our vacation by 20%. To me, that's a bit excessive given that our dogs (and quite frankly most dogs that travel) are better behaved and cleaner than most children, maybe I'm biased :)

In addition, the yurts are fairly close to one another. This can affect you in a number of ways. During our stay, we felt like we had to whisper to keep from distracting others. Unfortunately, our yurt neighbors didn't share that belief as we listened comically to their grunts and groans throughout the night. Get a room, not a yurt! You kept waking my poodles!

The rooster! That darn rooster! Next to the yurt complex is a neighbor who has chickens and a rooster. He will awake you at 4AM. If anything, he's consistent. You better like getting up early.

All in all, the yurt experience was really cool! If it sat by itself in the middle of the woods, it would have been perfect. Because of the pet fees, we'll most likely not return, which is a shame because I could get used to yurt living.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay! It sounds like overall you had a pleasant experience however we would like to take this opportunity to touch on a few things your review mentioned. The kitchens are modest and furnished with items we thought guests vacationing would enjoy, we never boast to provide a gourmet experience. Additional less used kitchen items are available in our barn for free checkout. Every listing mentions what items are provided in the kitchen as well as 8 photos of the kitchen from various angles so that prospective guests know what will be available. In terms of the rooster, we do apologize! Our property has 7 yurts on 5 acres of land with Acadia National Park as a neighbor on 2 sides and residential neighbors on the other 2 sides. This location allows us to provide guests with a unique experience with proximity to the park while also keeping our rental costs reasonable for most families. Lastly, the pet fees. We are a pet friendly property which means we allow pet on our property. We allocate specific yurts for pets to additionally accommodate guests with severe pet allergies. We expect people inquiring with us to accurately communicate the makeup of their travel party; pets, children, number of guests, special needs, etc. This way we can accommodate a variety of travel preferences. This communication is industry standard, as are fees for traveling with pets. Our VRBO listings, website & rental agreement all mention pet fees of $100/pet/week. Every renter must accept the terms of the rental agreement prior to submitting their payment online. These fees were a surprise to you because you DID NOT indicate you were traveling with 2 dogs. When we noticed your dogs, we offered a reduced pet fee in good faith as traveling with 2 dogs for 2 weeks would be a large amount of unexpected expense. Had you told us you were traveling with 2 dogs prior to booking, you would have known about the fees and then also been placed in a pet friendly yurt which is located on a different side of the property. The local industry standard for pet fees ranges from $100-200/pet/week. We chose the low end of that range to make traveling with pets accessible knowing Acadia is a very pet friendly place. We strive to provide a 5 star experience for every guest. We will happily answer any questions this review brings up for potential travelers. Warmest Regards, Aaron & Karen

Camping with the convenience of home

  • 4 of 5

Acadia Yurts is ideally located on the quiet side of Mt. Desert Island, away from the hoards of visiting cruise ship travelers. We found it to be the PERFECT location for exploring all the little towns and hiking trails the island has to offer. Our yurt was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed for cooking basic meals. Bonus: no trekking to a communal camping shower facility (we loved the tankless, instant hot water heater!!!). Other yurts on the property were close but not uncomfortably so (more space between us and our neighbors than typical campground lots).

It was nice, but!

  • 2 of 5

We enjoyed the yurt and the area, overall it was a very nice experience and location. Linda and Aaron ask that you do not park near the yurts as to keep noise and distraction to a minimum which I agree with because you can hear everything through the thin exterior of the yurt; however, they allow pets (dogs) which bark so we do not understand why they permit them. We were awakened at 6-6:30 one morning due to barking and one afternoon after we had been out all morning trekking we retreated to our yurt for an afternoon nap only to be awakened by barking dogs, our neighbors had 2 which they left alone all day while they were gone and they barked off and on all day until they returned in the evening. They barked off and on all week.

My wife and I previously vacationed at a different camp and location weeks earlier and we were subjected to dogs, barking, approaching our grill with food on it and dog poo, needless to say, to have dogs affect the quality of our vacation when we spend the money we have for vacations...we do not appreciate it.

Owner's Response: First off we want to apologize for your negative experience at our establishment. This is never the way we want our customers to leave Acadia Yurts. It sounds like previous negative experiences with dogs help to contribute to your experience with us which is unfortunate. Karen and I take great pride in making ourselves available to our customers if they are in need. We leave our business card (with phones numbers and email) in every greeting card, welcome binder and electronic check in packet. Also, each yurt refrigerator has our business card as a magnet. And finally, our VRBO correspondence with you asked to not hesitate in relaying questions our way if needed. We wish you would have contacted us with your pet concerns at that time because we would have addressed them immediately. We obviously cannot do anything now about it but we wish we had been given the opportunity to fix the issue. As far as dogs on our property, MDI is a very dog friendly area and quite honestly, so is Acadia Yurts. We hold our pet owners to a high set of standards with our set of Rental Agreement Pet Policies. We further outline our pet expectations in our correspondence messages with every customer that brings a dog(s). We live on the property and did not notice the dogs barking. I guess we just wish you had come to us with this during your stay instead of after it. We do very much appreciate your business and we are truly sorry you had a less than ideal vacation with us. Warmest Regards, Aaron & Karen
