Vacation in an ancient circular dwelling with all comforts of home

Acadia Yurts offers visitors the most unique way to stay on Mount Desert Island. Seven fun, eco-friendly Yurts will bring you as close to nature as camping, with all the amenities of home. Located on 5 acres of lovely wooded land, surrounded by Acadia National Park property, Acadia Yurts offer a peaceful retreat for your group (up to 4 guests per Yurt or larger yurt to accommodate up to 6 people). Acadia Yurts is also ideal for large groups traveling with accommodations for up to 32 people on 1 site.

A yurt is a tent-like circular fabric structure with a wood lattice frame that originated among the nomadic tribes in Asia. These permanent structures have thick canvas exterior walls that include reflective insulation so they can be used in all seasons. Acadia Yurts also has electric heat inside each yurt so that you can be comfortable during any season. Yurts are quickly becoming a new vacation experience that vacationers are enjoying throughout the US from cliff side views in California to ski lodges in Colorado. This is a memorable place to stay while enjoying the beauty of Acadia!

About Karen Roper

Aaron is an Maine native. He was born and raised across the bridge in Trenton and grew up attending local Bar Harbor schools. He has worked in the restaurant industry for the past 15+ years beginning as a prep cook in high school then moving toward general manager. Aaron's favorite extracurricular activity is learning all he can about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As often as he can he trains locally and loves sharing this passion with others.

Karen is a transplant. Originally from Chicago she made her way to Maine in 2009 and fell in love immediately. In Acadia she enjoys hiking, trail running, yoga, and long walks on the carriage roads. Karen teaches yoga during the summer months among some of Acadia's favorite vistas- Sand Beach, Cadillac Mountain, Parkman Mountain and ocean front in Bar Harbor. Karen is presently enrolled in massage school and will graduate April 2015 with hopes of sharing the gift of massage at Acadia Yurts.

As a couple we have done quite a bit of traveling and through that we have narrowed down the particular way we like to travel. The biggest factor for us is having a furnished kitchen in order to prepare health minded foods to nourish our bodies and support all our outdoor activities. The idea for Acadia Yurts has been brewing for quite some time. Friends of ours live off the grid in a yurt and we greatly appreciate the rustic, romantic feel of the yurt but wanted some of the comforts of home- running water, heat, electricity. From there Acadia Yurts was born. We deeply hope you enjoy our home as much as we do!!

Camping with the convenience of home

  • 4 of 5

Acadia Yurts is ideally located on the quiet side of Mt. Desert Island, away from the hoards of visiting cruise ship travelers. We found it to be the PERFECT location for exploring all the little towns and hiking trails the island has to offer. Our yurt was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed for cooking basic meals. Bonus: no trekking to a communal camping shower facility (we loved the tankless, instant hot water heater!!!). Other yurts on the property were close but not uncomfortably so (more space between us and our neighbors than typical campground lots).

It was nice, but!

  • 2 of 5

We enjoyed the yurt and the area, overall it was a very nice experience and location. Linda and Aaron ask that you do not park near the yurts as to keep noise and distraction to a minimum which I agree with because you can hear everything through the thin exterior of the yurt; however, they allow pets (dogs) which bark so we do not understand why they permit them. We were awakened at 6-6:30 one morning due to barking and one afternoon after we had been out all morning trekking we retreated to our yurt for an afternoon nap only to be awakened by barking dogs, our neighbors had 2 which they left alone all day while they were gone and they barked off and on all day until they returned in the evening. They barked off and on all week.

My wife and I previously vacationed at a different camp and location weeks earlier and we were subjected to dogs, barking, approaching our grill with food on it and dog poo, needless to say, to have dogs affect the quality of our vacation when we spend the money we have for vacations...we do not appreciate it.

Owner's Response: First off we want to apologize for your negative experience at our establishment. This is never the way we want our customers to leave Acadia Yurts. It sounds like previous negative experiences with dogs help to contribute to your experience with us which is unfortunate. Karen and I take great pride in making ourselves available to our customers if they are in need. We leave our business card (with phones numbers and email) in every greeting card, welcome binder and electronic check in packet. Also, each yurt refrigerator has our business card as a magnet. And finally, our VRBO correspondence with you asked to not hesitate in relaying questions our way if needed. We wish you would have contacted us with your pet concerns at that time because we would have addressed them immediately. We obviously cannot do anything now about it but we wish we had been given the opportunity to fix the issue. As far as dogs on our property, MDI is a very dog friendly area and quite honestly, so is Acadia Yurts. We hold our pet owners to a high set of standards with our set of Rental Agreement Pet Policies. We further outline our pet expectations in our correspondence messages with every customer that brings a dog(s). We live on the property and did not notice the dogs barking. I guess we just wish you had come to us with this during your stay instead of after it. We do very much appreciate your business and we are truly sorry you had a less than ideal vacation with us. Warmest Regards, Aaron & Karen

Can't wait to come back!

  • 5 of 5

My little family (Husband and 3 year old son) recently stayed at the Acadia Yurts, and I can honestly say that 5 stars simply is not enough to give to this property! From the minute we stepped through the door, not only did we feel like we were on vacation, but we felt like we were home. Beautifully decorated, great little kitchen, warm lighting, pristine conditions. That's a very difficult thing to achieve for any vacation property, but these folks have nailed it. We were close enough to Bar Harbor and the Park so that we could come and go as we pleased, which was important to us with a still napping little boy. We actually planned our last day around a chunk of time just spent in the yurt. Unplugged, cooking dinner in our sweet little kitchen, and snuggling up on the couch with some popcorn and a stack of books. Perfect. Just perfect. So many thanks to Karen and Aaron...we will be booking soon for next year!!

Fantastic experience!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just got home from our stay at Acadia Yurts. We absolutely loved it! Both the property and the yurts themselves are a beautiful place. The owners are extremely accommodating and hospitable. There is much to explore nearby in the SouthWest Harbor, and Acadia and Bar Harbor are very close by as well. We will be recommending this rental to all our friends and family. If we ever decide to vacation in Maine again, we will definitely be staying at Acadia Yurts!

Great Glamping!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time at Acadia Yurts and the area. The Yurt was just as pictured. Karen & Aaron really put a lot of thought and effort into the design and outfitting of them. Well equipped and comfortable with AC and Heat. It was great waking in the morning to the view of trees through the skylight. Some hiking trails of Acadia National Park are five minutes away. The main part of the park, Loop Road and Carriage Roads are about 20. Really nice being on the quite side of Mt. Desert Island. Highly recommended.
