About Karen Roper

Aaron is an Maine native. He was born and raised across the bridge in Trenton and grew up attending local Bar Harbor schools. He has worked in the restaurant industry for the past 15+ years beginning as a prep cook in high school then moving toward general manager. Aaron's favorite extracurricular activity is learning all he can about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As often as he can he trains locally and loves sharing this passion with others.

Karen is a transplant. Originally from Chicago she made her way to Maine in 2009 and fell in love immediately. In Acadia she enjoys hiking, trail running, yoga, and long walks on the carriage roads. Karen teaches yoga during the summer months among some of Acadia's favorite vistas- Sand Beach, Cadillac Mountain, Parkman Mountain and ocean front in Bar Harbor. Karen is presently enrolled in massage school and will graduate April 2015 with hopes of sharing the gift of massage at Acadia Yurts.

As a couple we have done quite a bit of traveling and through that we have narrowed down the particular way we like to travel. The biggest factor for us is having a furnished kitchen in order to prepare health minded foods to nourish our bodies and support all our outdoor activities. The idea for Acadia Yurts has been brewing for quite some time. Friends of ours live off the grid in a yurt and we greatly appreciate the rustic, romantic feel of the yurt but wanted some of the comforts of home- running water, heat, electricity. From there Acadia Yurts was born. We deeply hope you enjoy our home as much as we do!!

Peace & Comfort!

  • 5 of 5

When we first saw the photos of our yurt, I was hopeful that it looked like what we saw online. When we opened the door, every detail was exactly the same as what was online! We were very happy and stayed in our extremely comfortable yurt for the first night. How lovely to have AC, heat, hot showers, and a lovely kitchen complete with local coffee right in the middle of Acadia. We deemed ourselves "glampers" instead of campers as this was so very glamorous!

Aaron & Karen checked in on us via a phone call after first night and we knew they were there if we needed anything at all!

The red barn has so many supplies and board games for rainy days!

We absolutely loved Acadia Yurts and look forward to only staying there in the future! What a find! THANK YOU!!!!

Clean, cozy, and a wonderful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We really loved staying at Acadia Yurts on our recent trip to Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. The yurts were clean, cozy, and welcoming. While the location is a bit farther away from the classic Acadia sights than I expected, we loved being on the quieter side of the island and exploring Southwest Harbor. Communication with the hosts was excellent - they called to check that we were settled in okay and made sure we were aware of tree planting that was happening during our stay. The hosts also left a great binder full of favorite spots, restaurants, and suggested activities, plus a ton of brochures and a guide book, which was super helpful when exploring areas we hadn't been to before and finding new places to eat. It felt like a personal touch without being intrusive, which was really nice. For a week long vacation, it was also great to have a kitchen so we didn't have to eat out for every single meal and could save leftovers from when we did go out to eat. Other amenities, like a picnic area with grills, hammocks, a barn with laundry and additional appliances like a crockpot, were wonderful to have on site, and I loved that the hosts had eco-friendly composting and recycling set up as well. The yurts tend to attract people who value these type of things, so I found all of the other guests to be polite, respectful, and great neighbors.

The only kind of downside to staying at Acadia Yurts was the location. The area right around the yurts isn't too exciting (I go on runs every morning and the dirt roads nearby got old really fast) and it's too far to walk to anything so you end up using your car every day. The yurts are not close to any of the park's main attractions. There is also a quarry down the road that was sometimes loud. What you miss in convenience you make up for in privacy though, and we ended up exploring areas outside the park and spending time in Southwest Harbor which is far less busy than Bar Harbor but still has great food and shops.

Overall, I really enjoyed our stay, would not hesitate to recommend Acadia Yurts to anyone else, and would happily stay there again in the future.

Wonderful stay near Acadia National Park!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay at Acadia Yurts this Fall! Karen and Aaron have truly thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and relaxing. While we didn't get to meet them on our trip, they made sure we knew they were available for any questions, gave us their cell numbers if we had any problems and had a detailed info packet ready to go for us when we arrived on dining, exploring and everything Acadia has to offer. The yurts are such a fun alternative to a hotel and we wanted to try something different. We were mostly coming for the wonderful fall hiking and views that Acadia offers and we were not disappointed! I would recommend the yurts to anyone that wants to stay somewhere that is relaxing, homey, and close to Acadia.

Great experience!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our two dogs stayed at Acadia Yurts for a week and had a great experience! The yurt was clean, in a great location on MDI and very comfortable. I was amazed you could have running water, heat, a kitchen and bathroom inside a yurt! It was also a beautiful structure.

We were minutes away from hiking and enjoying beautiful Long Pond plus downtown Southwest Harbor restaurants and a grocery store. I would recommend the yurt experience to anyone who wants to have a great new experience!
