Vacation in an ancient circular dwelling with all comforts of home

Acadia Yurts offers visitors the most unique way to stay on Mount Desert Island. Seven fun, eco-friendly Yurts and one Tiny House will bring you as close to nature as camping, with all the amenities of home. Located on 5 acres of lovely wooded land, surrounded by Acadia National Park property, Acadia Yurts offer a peaceful retreat for your group (up to 4 guests per Yurt or larger yurt to accommodate up to 6 people). Acadia Yurts is also ideal for large groups traveling with accommodations for up to 32 people on 1 site.

A yurt is a tent-like circular fabric structure with a wood lattice frame that originated among the nomadic tribes in Asia. These permanent structures have thick canvas exterior walls that include reflective insulation so they can be used in all seasons. Acadia Yurts also has electric heat inside each yurt so that you can be comfortable during any season. Yurts are quickly becoming a new vacation experience that vacationers are enjoying throughout the US from cliff side views in California to ski lodges in Colorado. This is a memorable place to stay while enjoying the beauty of Acadia!

About Karen Roper

Aaron is an Maine native. He was born and raised across the bridge in Trenton and grew up attending local Bar Harbor schools. He has worked in the restaurant industry for the past 15+ years beginning as a prep cook in high school then moving toward general manager. Aaron's favorite extracurricular activity is learning all he can about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As often as he can, he trains locally and loves sharing this passion with others.

Karen is a transplant. Originally from Chicago she made her way to Maine in 2009 and fell in love immediately. In Acadia she enjoys hiking, trail running, yoga, and long walks on the carriage roads. Karen teaches yoga during the summer months among some of Acadia's favorite vistas- Sand Beach, Cadillac Mountain, Parkman Mountain and ocean front in Bar Harbor. Karen is presently enrolled in massage school and will graduate April 2015 with hopes of sharing the gift of massage at Acadia Yurts.

As a couple we have done quite a bit of traveling and through that we have narrowed down the particular way we like to travel. The biggest factor for us is having a furnished kitchen in order to prepare health minded foods to nourish our bodies and support all our outdoor activities. The idea for Acadia Yurts has been brewing for quite some time. Friends of ours live off the grid in a yurt and we greatly appreciate the rustic, romantic feel of the yurt but wanted some of the comforts of home- running water, heat, electricity. From there Acadia Yurts was born. We deeply hope you enjoy our home as much as we do!!

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Traveling typically involves our two dogs and that makes it a bit more challenging to find a place that welcomes the dogs and spoils the people. Acadia Yurts does this! Aaron and Karen stocked the yurt with everything we needed and had lots available on site to be borrowed. The experience was better than we anticipated and when they say a/c and hot water, they mean it! It wasn’t hot water for two minutes and then you’re out of luck or a broken down old a/c unit. Lastly, each season they pick a local charity to donate all of the redeemable bottles/cans to and match the donation. ❤️ The yurts are definitely a magical way to experience Mount Desert Island.

My fiancee and I stayed here for a week and loved it!

The grounds are well maintained, all of the yurt sites are beautiful and well appointed.

The owners are friendly and helpful.

We will definitely come back and have started recommended it to others as well.

Perfect Vacation Stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented the Flying Mountain Yurt over the 4th of July week. The Yurt id fantastic and has everything you need. It is beautiful and Karen and Aaron were great to work with. We loved the location on the quiet side of the Island but still plenty of things to do and places to eat close by. Beautiful hiking, we also tried Paddle boarding and LOVED that.

When we booked the Yurt our main concern was the "Campground" sort of environment. We love the idea of camping but honestly hate people staying up late and keeping us up, We like our sleep. No worries in the Yurts, the campground has quite hours that were very quiet. We slept great!! The dome on the top of the yurt is great, you can see all the stars at night and you wake up to the sun in the morning.

We will be back for another vacation here at the yurts.

This is the way camping should be done!

  • 5 of 5

We just came back from a long weekend at Acadia Yurts and we really wished we never had to leave. The yurt was perfect - good size, great amenities, clean and so comfortable. The property is so quiet and yet so close to Acadia that it made it the perfect place to collapse at the end of the day. We are already planning our returns! We can't wait!

The yurts were great.

  • 5 of 5

Very nice and clean. Quiet location. Owners were very nice and offered a lot of help. A little pricey considering they ask you to clean everything before you leave but they did return the deposit very quickly. I would recommend and would stay there again.

Southwest Harbor is affectionately known as the 'Quiet Side' of Mount Desert Island. Home to Acadia National Park, rated one of America's favorite places by Good Morning America in 2014, the activities are endless. With hiking, biking, walking trails, swimming and ocean views there is something for everyone.

Acadia Yurts is owned and operated by MDI residents Karen and Aaron. This young couple brings 20+ years of hospitality industry knowledge and experience to provide you and your loved ones with a vacation experience to remember for years to come.

Yurts are ancient circular dwellings and Acadia Yurts has brought modern comforts to create a beautiful union of comfort and proximity to nature. Most of the yurts sleep up to 4 with the exception of the 30' Yurt which sleeps 6. Each yurt includes a furnished kitchen, private bathroom, and comfortable bedding to make you feel at home. Acadia Yurt's now also features a Tiny House for rent for singles or couples looking to downsize!

Karen is a certified yoga teacher and massage therapist and will provide spa like treatment in your comfortable dwelling at extra charge.

Southwest Harbor is located less than 2 miles away and has locally owned restaurants, specialty stores, and shopping as well as a library, parks, and ocean views. Local restaurants offer fresh seafood with their unique flair. Some of our favorite places are Fiddler's Green, XYZ, Eat- A- Pita, and Sips.

Outdoor enthusiasts have their pick of hiking within 5 miles of Acadia Yurts- Beech, St. Sauveur, Acadia, and Flying Mountain within a couple minutes drive. Swimming at Seal Cove Pond or Long Pond within minutes. Bass Harbor lighthouse and Wonderland walking area less than 10 miles away. Or board a Friendship Sloop with Sail Acadia for a 2-6 hour sail around Acadia National Park. Your choices of how to enjoy Acadia are endless and there is truly something for everyone!
