About Kendra

Hi there I'm Karen Kelly, I grew up in San Diego and love it here. I own a local business caring for the elderly so I'm very sensitive to peoples needs and having time away is important and needs to be nice, relaxing and have the commences of home...I love the attention to details when I travel..so I make my home lovely and it has all the things you need to be comfortable and FEEL AT HOME. I love life and don't like complicated, uptight people. So if your high maintenance pep's you may want to vacation else where, I'm recovering from cancer and just want to invite apprecative people in my life and home. Enjoy each day... San Diego has a lot to offer EVERYONE at ALL ages!!

Kendra purchased this house in 1995

Why Kendra chose Torrey Preserve

This home is quite unique, enchanting, piece of art, super cool, "way better than expected" (no square walls), cozy and rustic. The home was build in 1987 by James Hubbell, a local artist...check out is work at hubbellandhubbell.com. The home is surrounded by mature tea trees, that whimicaly light up at night! The Jacuzzi is a new addition and will be hot when you arrive, sit under the stars at night and enjoy. The home really caught my eye and "I had to Have it"! The home sits on a acre, neighbor is a landscape grower, horses, lovely quiet rural area...that most San Diego people don't even know about!! But it's close to the 5 freeway, 20 from SAN airport, down town, La Jolla just 10 minutes away (depending on traffic) If you like unique, you'll LOVE the Rustic Emerald Retreat ..Also featured on HGTV "extreme and unique" homes and Sunset Magazine

What makes this house unique

I love the rural area, privacy, quiet....but 5 minute drive to the beach, Torrey Pines", out of hecticness....The uniqueness of my home makes it so cozy and FUN. Also featured on HGTV "extreme and unique" homes and Sunset Magazine...Memories mater anyone can stay in a house...this is a home! I've added a lovely area for weddings with a sweeping staircase coming down to a area where there is a water fountain, Call me for the details. I hosted a 30 person reception, we have plenty of parking and a lovely enchanting VIBE!!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Felt private and secluded

  • 4 of 5

Although this older property could use some TLC, particularly the aging and dirty carport which is the first thing you see upon arrival, our overall stay was very satisfying and we would stay here again. The outside living space is wonderful, relaxing and surrounded by trees. The kitchen functioned well and the bedrooms were very comfortable. We entertained one evening and the atmosphere was very conducive to relaxing out of doors with guests. There is a patio off of every room and so many different areas to take a book or glass of wine. We were ten minutes from the beach and Del Mar race track, but the tree-lined setting and unique character of the home, made us feel relaxed and secluded.

Unique home in need of TLC

  • 3 of 5

This home is truly a unique gem. We loved the interesting spaces and setting. We were disappointed in the overall state of disrepair for this architectural beauty. I understand that proximity to beach and renting a home adds significant wear and tear. However I found myself wishing I could buy it just to restore it. Also did not enjoying looking at the carport stuffed with garbage/furniture/etc every time we returned home. Read the fine print, and know that there will be flies & some mosquitoes and you'll be using fans if it's hot (no A/c). Also, there are no window shades and laundry room is shared with property manager (male). Although I never saw him, I felt like we had no privacy because he might walk through. We enjoyed ourselves and really appreciated this unique home. The pictures online show the beauty, but you don't see the broken, missing or poorly repaired things. (E.g., the king mattress rests on a queen size platform)

An Artistic Marvel

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with eight people from ages 10-84 when we were in town for a soccer tournament in Del Mar.

The listing was spot on and the unique and artistic architecture was even more breathtaking than we imagined!

The property was clean and well maintained with fresh clean towels.

We really enjoyed the outdoor showers, hot tub and dining under the beautiful lights and skies of San Diego. We felt like we were so remote and private yet within walking distance to the beaches!

Karen was very hospitable and met us at the property when we checked in and stayed in communication with us during our entire stay and afterwards to make sure we enjoyed ourselves!

I would definitely recommend this property to anyone!

An Oasis near Del Mar!

  • 5 of 5

Delightful stay in a very unique home. As I love to barbecue and cook, I found the kitchen to be very well equipped. One of the most wonderful beds we have slept in on any vacation!

We rated the property as a four out of five because when we arrived and parked in a rather dilapidated garage, we encountered awful smells coming from an overflowing garbage can located next to our car. I asked the gardeners to remove the can, which he did. Also, we had an ant problem in the kitchen. I recommend the management firm provide a can of Raid or something similar as well as having a pest control company service the property.

Magic in Del Mar

  • 5 of 5

I wanted to take my mom away for Mother's Day to a place we wouldn't want to leave...and we found that at this amazing Hubbell retreat. We've both been to LaJolla, so we didn't feel the need to explore very far. We literally needed to just get away and unwind. This property was just the ticket. It's minutes from the 5 freeway, but feels lifetimes away. The architecture and details are so cool - it's like a real-life hobbit house. We loved reading about J. Hubbell. It gives you indoor-outdoor living at its best. There are outdoor relaxation areas all around the large property - not to mention the hot tub. It was very clean, and incredibly comfortable. Easy wi-fi, satellite tv, and the beds - the beds are divine! I admit, I'm a bed snob. Both beds have cushy memory foam toppers and luxury linens. There are quirky things about the property, which for us, only added to its charm. But as the listing states, if you have any questions (mobility issues, etc.), just talk to the owner, Karen. Speaking of Karen - she answered all of my (many) questions - both before and during our stay. She was wonderful. Del Mar is quaint and beautiful. The house is very convenient to many dining/shopping options, if you desire. We 100% will be back. The fairy lights beckon.
