Overview

About the property

Remodeled 3 Bed/2 Bath Surrounded by mountains, forest; Minutes from Co Spring

Take a step back in history as you stay in one of the earlier-built homes in Cascade. Relive part of the history of the canyon and our family’s connection to Cascade as you look at the old photographs on the walls and leaf through the books on the mantle or the picture albums on the family trunk. Pretend you are sleeping under the 1870’s hand-woven throw that is displayed on the wall in the guest bedroom; or try to determine the origin of the pencil drawings on the framed muslin chair cover which was found underneath the replaced upholstery of the ladder back chair in the living room. And then picture all of this while enjoying the modern conveniences of the 21st century.

Raphael’s Retreat (elevation 7,548’), at the base of Pikes Peak and surrounded by the Pike National Forest, offers its visitors the best of all worlds. Though only minutes away from US Hwy 24, you forget that you are near civilization as you relax on the large porch or on the back deck and hear the nearby stream, gaze at the surrounding pine-covered mountains, or watch the hummingbirds as they fight for food at the feeders. Walk a small distance and let your children enjoy hours on the Cascade Community Park playground. Stroll a little beyond, and stick your feet in the cold stream. Grab one of the several hiking sticks and venture to the trailhead of the Heizer trail to test your hiking abilities or take an easy climb up to Mother’s Rest. Everything you could ask for--all within walking distance of your front door!

Inside, Raphael’s Retreat is furnished with everything you might need during your stay. Wake up in the mornings, look out any of your bedroom windows, and see yourself surrounded by the mountains. Use the A-framed, bedroom upstairs for a second sitting room (with TV) or a third bedroom, equipped with a double bed , and view the mountains from another perspective as you gaze out the two large skylights. When not out visiting the many attractions in the area, entertain yourself with board games, books, old movies, and of course, cable and Wi-Fi. Take a break from eating out by taking advantage of the fully-stocked, remodeled kitchen or grill up a delicacy on the charcoal grill. And, finally, after a busy day, enjoy either a bath or a hot shower in one of the two bathrooms.

Of course, venturing out by car will take you to the many places of interest in the area, as well. Be sure to check out a sampling of those activities under the “LOCATION” section of our listing. Additionally, we have provided you with notebooks about local restaurants and activities (no matter what your interests might be) in the wooden tray on the coffee table. There are also numerous books above the fireplace that will help you find spots to hike and explore.

We have owned Raphael’s Retreat since 2012, but you will learn that our story in Cascade began many years before then. We were finally fortunate to find this retreat from our daily lives and now spend approximately three months each year in our second neighborhood. How lucky we were to find a home with such character and utility, a garden to work in, and the best neighbors you could ask for. We are excited to be able to share our home and the wonder of Cascade with travelers such as you.

**As stated in the amenities, please remember there is no land line phone. Verizon and Sprint are the two cell phone services that work in the canyon. In order to use other mobile services, you must go to Hwy 24. To maintain contact with others if you do not have Verizon or Sprint we encourage you to use Skype via our wi-fi.

7/2013 "There is not much down time in our real world. Our visit to Raphael's Retreat was a much needed break from the norm. We hiked a little, splashed a little, and enjoyed many laughs. Our family couldn't have had a better time. Thank you for a family vacation we will remember always."

9/2014 "Sally and Tom, you've created a perfect haven here in Cascade. Everything about your home was easy, comfortable and welcoming. The details reflect you in little ways that seems so familiar--family photos (historic!), pottery and artwork-very meaningful. Your yard and garden are a wonder--the bees and birds were all very buzzy and busy--and I love your bottle rail on the deck!"

12/2014 "We had a fantastic family Christmas at Raphael's Retreat! I was so excited when we arrived and saw how lovely and cozy the house is. We logged a lot of time in the kitchen cooking some of our favorite family meals and around the table playing games and laughing until our cheeks hurt!"

About Sally Lundblad

We are both retired educators, having spent a combined 77 years in public education. Once we were able to retire and be able to enjoy life on "our" schedule rather than a school schedule, we chose to make the Rocky Mountains our second home. Because we have grandchildren in Louisburg, our current permanent residence, we have to share our time between Cascade and the Kansas City area. Because we want to share what we hold so dear to us, we decided to offer our property to others as a VRBO. It is a place that is very special to us, and we hope will be special to those who stay there.

Sally Lundblad purchased this house in 2012

Why Sally Lundblad chose Cascade

Sally was lucky enough to have spent her summers in Cascade, growing up for three months each year in the house that is kitty-corner to Raphael's Retreat. Her grandparents purchased the property in the early 1900's and the property stayed in the family until the late 1960's. Because of the fond memories and the fact that she and Tom met on a trip to Colorado Springs, they decided to try to purchase property in the canyon. Their original dream was to own the family house; but when they realized this would not happen in the near future they decided that the location--not the house--was what made this place so special. They love the 1898 bungalow they were able to purchase and can't imagine not being able to spend time there. At their fingertips are opportunities to hike; cultural activities; good restaurants; and, best of all, wonderful neighbors.

The property was amazing.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week and we found the property to be clean, welcoming, warm and cozy. We felt like we belonged there. The owners and property manager could not have been better. We had a sweet welcome note from the owner when we arrived. She checked in on us and was available to answer my questions. The hummingbirds on the front porch provided us with hours of entertainment while we enjoyed the porch and the views. The property is well cared for and has everything you need. The property manager is also available if you need her. This house is close to lots of activities and has room to entertain. We hope to book this property again in the future! Love, Love, Love!!!

Great location! All the ammenities needed for a comfortable stay!

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful location, close to everything we wanted to do. Enjoyed the front porch each night, eating our dinner and watching the crazy hummingbirds. At first we were a little concerned when we realized the home was not air conditioned, but the great Colorado weather and the location of the home quickly calmed our fears. Evenings were comfortable and we slept great!

No matter what your goal for a vacation might be, you can find it satisfied nearby. Outdoor activities, including rafting, hiking, rock climbing, biking, and fishing are all within 30 miles of Cascade. Some, in fact, can be found in the immediate neighborhood. For example, the trailhead for the Heizer Trail is located in our canyon. Cascade Creek, flowing down the center of the canyon, provides sights and sounds which welcome the weary traveler and the adventurous. If you have young children, the community park is across the street, offering a small playground and large lot for outdoor play.

If your interests fall more along the line of cultural events, shopping, and local tourist attractions, you simply have to travel ten minutes in either direction to find almost anything you want. Five minutes down Ute Pass you come to Manitou Springs and Old Colorado City and all of the attractions and shopping they have to offer. In another ten minutes you are in downtown Colorado Springs and can experience a totally different feel from the quaintness of Manitou and Old Colorado City. Five minutes in the opposite direction (farther west) you will be able to enjoy the laid back feel of the old resort town of Green Mountain Falls, either sitting by the lake in the center of town, relaxing with a beverage on an outside patio, or hiking one of the trails that begins in the community. Five minutes further you will find Woodland Park which offers the typical fare and activities of any mountain resort town and tourist area.

Depending upon the time of year of your stay, you may also be able to attend one of the many festivals that are hosted throughout the region. These include, but are not limited to, Territory Days, Donkey Derby Days, Green Mountain Falls Bronc Days, Green Box Fine Arts Festival, and Woodland Park Mountain Arts Festival. During the growing season you can also find a farmers' market on almost every day of the week.

Other attractions which may be of interest to you (and their distance from Raphael's Retreat) include:

Pike's Peak entrance-- .8 mile

Santa's Workshop at the North Pole--.8 mile

Manitou Cliff Dwellings--4.7 miles

Cave of the Winds--5 miles

Garden of the Gods--6 miles

The Broadmoor--11.5 miles

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo--13 miles

Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine--33 miles

Colorado Wolf & Wildlife Center--19 miles

Cripple Creek--34 miles

Royal Gorge--68 miles

Breckenridge, CO--96 miles
