Overview

About the property

Comfortably Sleeps 12 With 4 Bedrooms, 3 full Bathrooms .

25 minutes (16 miles) from downtown Asheville, our secluded cottage on Bearwallow Mountain sits on 10 acres and backs up to 800 acres of private, conservation land with a dedicated trail system accessible from the cottage. Located in Gerton, NC, along a scenic highway, it has breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains from spacious front porch. Outdoor fire pit (fire wood provided) and indoor fireplace/woodstove. Newly upgraded kitchen and bathrooms; newly painted and redecorated interior; hiking trails surround property.

Open, light-filled interior with bedrooms downstairs and ample loft space upstairs. Inviting, spacious front porch with breath-taking views ideal for lounging, bird watching, dining, dancing and truly getting away from it all. Cottage is nestled in mountains and is made for people who love mountains and nature!

The first thing you'll fall in love with is the gently upward sloping driveway toward the house. A carefully landscaped grove of trees appears on the left, and up ahead Bearwallow Cottage gradually comes into view. It's an adorable home reminiscent of fairy tale cottages, well-proportioned and beautifully shingled. The driveway is circular and very conveniently placed beside the house--on the same level as and just a few steps from the kitchen door for easy access (a rare quality in homes at high elevation!). Lots of space for parking--can fit 8-10 vehicles easily. As you walk from the driveway, you will most likely bypass the kitchen door and be drawn another few steps to the enormous front porch. The view from this porch is so striking most people fall silent, gazing at the dramatic, sweeping mountain vista. Even if you're not an out-door person, you'll want to spend your entire stay on this porch, reading, conversing, or just silently taking in the great majesty of the mountains in front of you. Going inside, you'll be charmed by the open, light-filled interior, newly appointed kitchen and large comfy living room with TV (DISH satellite) and radio receiver. Two large bedrooms lead from this first floor, the master bedroom and one of the guest rooms, both with private baths. A staircase leads up to a generously proportioned loft space where another guest room and full bath are at one end of the loft, and a set of 4 twin beds plus entertainment center are at the other. The house is ideal for entertaining with a perfect mix of common and private areas to mingle and quietly relax. The porch itself is long enough to accommodate people who want to sit together, and at the other end, a quiet and slightly removed seating area, the entirety of which looks out onto the truly breathtaking surrounding mountains.

About Alan and Annie MacNair

Alan and I were married in 2012. Every day, we feel very fortunate to have met and we are so happy to share our cottage property with our guests. We have 6 children, ages 16-29, and 1 4-year-old grandchild--and they keep us busy! We love hiking, biking and horseback riding in the mountains, as well as taking care of our farm: gardening and tending to our horses, goats, chickens and dogs. Alan is a native of Asheville and Annie is from the northeast. Our favorite pastimes are conversation, reading, cooking and exploring Asheville.

Alan and Annie MacNair purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Alan and Annie MacNair chose Gerton

The property was originally owned by Alan's older sister in 2005. Very sadly, she passed away 5 years ago and it was sold by her estate. We always intended to buy it back into the family and now we have, returning this jewel to its family of origin. Bearwallow Cottage is nestled in a truly unique and protected mountain setting which sits directly on the Eastern Continental Divide. The 10-acre property is surrounded by 800 square miles of privately owned and conserved land. It is blissfully quiet and the views are honestly breathtaking.

What makes this cottage unique

Wonderful hiking trails right out the door of the cottage for all ages. Trails are very well maintained and access some of the most stunning views of the surrounding mountains with relatively easy exertion. Great picnic spots at the summit of Blue Ridge Pastures and Bearwallow Mountain.

Spectacular mountaintop retreat with great hikes and gracious owners

  • 5 of 5

Breathtaking views and wonderful hikes right out the front door. Two words: the deck. The photos can't capture all the loveliness and expansiveness of this amazing place. Our time was supremely restful. Everything was comfortable and well-appointed. Kitchen was beautifully equipped for lots of cooking. Annie and Alan were very kind, attentive and helpful before and during our stay. I had a fabulous 40th birthday retreat with dear friends at this beautiful cottage! I'd stay there again in a heartbeat. Can't recommend this place highly enough!

A fabulous cottage and beautiful surroundings !!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Annie and Alan for being such kind and gracious hosts . Our girls getaway was memorable because your beautiful cottage allowed us to enjoy ourselves . The cottage is immaculate and well stocked with everything you will need . There is a warmth that was obvious the minute we stepped foot into the front door . Your back deck was pretty magical . To behold the mountains and beauty from the porch was a daily gift we all enjoyed . Thank you for sharing your cottage with us . We will reflect for months on the joy we shared at Bearwallow !

An amazing property!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Bearwallow cottage was awesome. We sat on the back porches for hours watching the birds and wildlife. Three nights in a row an orange glow fell over the mountains during sunset. We parked and stayed on top of this mountain. A few of our party drove into Asheville to see the sights and others visited Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. We hiked to the top of Bearwallow Mountain and enjoyed the commanding view. Cousins got together and we cooked out and had a wonderful time together. I'm sure we used every bit of the property - front yard playing football, soccer, wiffle ball and the fire pit at night. All of us were impressed with this property. The owners were accessible and we appreciate the beautiful flowers and all the lotions. We hope to be back in two years!

Beautiful views and a welcoming, warm cozy cabin

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful visit to this mountain top cabin. The cabin had everything we possibly needed. We especially appreciated the stock pile of firewood since the temperatures dropped to the single digits. We had ten in our group and everyone slept very comfortably. We were there for New Years Eve and made a big dinner. Everything we needed to cook and serve dinner was provided for. The owners are very helpful and great to work with. Plan to go back soon!
