Looking for a classic Northwoods lake house vacation?
A private family estate since the 1920s is now LOST LAKE PRIVATE RETREAT — a lake retreat for your getaway! This historic house was part of a private artist’s colony in the 1970s and ’80s. Original stand-up, whole log construction. Only a handful of this classic design remain in all the Northwoods.
Set among towering virgin White Pines and a nature preserve, this is a PRIVATE lakefront Retreat, with a long driveway through the woods, your own pier, swimming raft, fire pit and optional guest cabin (to add another bedroom and bath). Closest neighbor on one side is 500 feet away along the lake shore! The other neighbor is a walk through the woods to your friendly property owners.
Featuring two screened-in porches, a glass-walled dining room, large living room, three bedrooms (firm mattresses!), plus optional pull-out sofa sleeper and/or private guest cabin with full bath. Retro kitchen and baths — not luxury, but clean, functional and fitting for this nostalgic property. One guest commented that it’s “the kind of place where they’d film a movie—the kind of place you don’t want to leave.”
The Retreat includes rowboat, canoe, two mountain bikes. Friendly lake community … get to know locals and other vacationers at the twice-weekly waterfront softball games.
The Retreat is a 3300 sqft home on 5 wooded acres, with over 500 feet of private sandy shoreline.
541-acre Lost Lake is a serious fishing lake — ranked as one of Wisconsin’s premier fishing lakes by “Badger Sportsman” magazine. Lost Lake recorded award winning musky the last two years, 48" and 52". Also, waterskiing and pontoon boating. Lots of great hiking and biking in the immediate area.
Retreat is perfect for artists, retirees, nature lovers and other low-impact guests who will respect this historic house.
Need to spread out for additional family, or privacy? Rustic side cabin available, sleeps two, with full bath.

Lost Lake: Historic Family Estate Now a Vacation Retreat
Year Purchased: 1962
Why the Owner Chose St. Germain
The Retreat is next door to our property and summer home that my great grandfather (Dr. Gaebler) bought in 1917. He was best friends with Dr. Galbeck who owned the Retreat.
Thus we wanted to save the Retreat and upgrade it so guests could enjoy living in a real original lake home.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Plenty of room and solitude. You are by yourselves. Privacy. Your own world to enjoy. This is a unique estate home from 1920. Artists love it, but also extended families with children and adult children have plenty of room inside and out.
And there is a connected 80 acres of your private hiking trails in dense woods.
Owner's Map of St. Germain
Our family has owned property on Lost Lake since 1917. The Retreat is a treasured home that was originally the Galbeck estate, which included 1000 feet of lake frontage and 100 acres of woods. The history of this area is my passion to preserve. I love the north woods and my family history is here. My wife and I live next door to The Retreat in a large home called Blueberry Camp. Back in the 1920's homes were called camps as it was really roughing it back then, old outhouses still exist behind our home!
I was read stories by lantern light as a child in the 1950's when the electricity shut down by falling trees or lightning strikes. The phone was a on a "party line", two long rings and a short was "our" call.
Lost lake is the perfect sized lake with 220 shoreline owners that we call friends. My brothers and I learned to barefoot waterski on Lost Lake. But also, we have caught walleye as well as filled a creel or two with spring crappie. Please join us. Jack and Linda Peil

We LOVED our week in St. Germain at this beautiful, private, house. We enjoyed the beach including the eagles that flew around the property daily. We love nature so all the wildlife in the area was awesome. The spotless historical home with a 1920s feel was really fun to live in. The photos are great but I thought the house was even better than the photos. Jack and Linda (owners) were very friendly and helpful. I recommend this vacation retreat to anyone who wants a special, relaxing experience at a beautiful, private, quiet, retreat. We all feel rejuvenated!

A beautiful home on a wonderful lake. This is a vacation spot that is perfect for a family or a couple that wants to go somewhere to relax and read. There are wonderful quaint towns nearby and the lake is perfect for all water sports. Great canoeing opportunities on the Wisconsin river. Or just take a walk in the woods. It's all there for you.

The amount of property and lakefront was more than we thought possible. And the home was much larger than the photo's. What a beautiful historic home in the northwoods! The pier and waterfront is endless, and all to ourselves. The kids had such a great time. We will rebook every year.

Our stay this fall was fantastic. We walked and relaxed in the woods, and spent time on the Lake which is just a few feet from the house. The scent of pine, eagles flying overhead, the clear blue sky made this one of the most relaxing vacations ever. Thanks, can't wait to get back.

I have stayed at this beautiful property many times and it is indeed one of the best vacation spots I have ever visited. The view of Lost Lake is fantastic and the woods around the home are really nice. It is a very relaxing environment and the home itself is a classic Northern Wisconsin design and is extremely comfortable and well equiped. I highly recommend a stay at this exceptional property.
