There is great snorkeling, fishing, diving & kayaking directly in front of our property! The cottage has an upstairs bedroom with a queen sized bed & a downstairs bedroom with 2 twin sized beds. It can accomodate 4 adults comfortably.
For those of you who have never been to Molokai, you should know that Molokai is divided into a low-lying hot & dusty western half & a lush & tropical eastern side where there are beautiful mountains with gorgeous waterfalls & cool breezy tradewinds. Hale Kawaikapu represents astonishing value for money given the usage of the Jeep (a more up to date model than the one pictured here at the time of our visit) and access to the extensive gardens on site. The cottage may not have a "beach" as such but does have a sandy "beach park" on the grounds themselves which sets it far apart from other rentals in the area which had paltry grounds by comparison and close neighbors. The rental is basic but relatively well appointed, only missing one essential item - bakeware. The local stores sell disposable baking/cookie trays but I do wonder why this wasn't made available by the property owner. The cottage offers a private and secluded home away from the main road but still with easy access to the highway and in very easy reach of the local store (though nowhere on the island is a particular challenge to drive to- (hiking may be another matter but most main destinations are between 25 minutes and an hour away.) On-site amenities include a full kitchen and washing machine with an outdoor clothes line - rain is not uncommon on this side of the island so I would advise bringing an indoor clothes line if you think you may need one for more urgent drying. Bedding and bath linens were plentiful. You'll certainly never be lonely here, with local dog Lupe always on hand to deal with unwanted table scraps; and a resident entourage of geckos to remove most flying pests inside the cottage and on the lanai to the side. Beware however: the geckos like to poop, and their poop attracts ants. Likewise all open food containers will need to be secured in zip-lock bags or kept in the refrigerator (this is a common Hawaii issue and not unique to this property.) Given the (admittedly few) steps up to both cottage entrances, the stairs to the main loft bedroom and the elevated couches/beds this may not be an ideal property for those less able to climb or suffering from hip trouble. Airport transfers are provided and you are saving a great deal on vehicle rental but you will still be asked to gas up on leaving, so remember to set aside some funds (European visitors will be pleasantly surprised by the gas prices however.) I would recommend this property to couples or small families requiring nothing more than the basics - though to be fair if you're expecting more, you're on the wrong island anyway!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car.

This place was out of this world and so were James & Lauren. They were extremely knowledgeable of the island and all the cool spots to checkout. The hike to the falls were outstanding. The road getting there was and adventure by itself. Then the drive up to the Bogs and hiking in the rain forest and the views were nothing like I have ever seen. This place is truly paradise. James would crack the coconuts and we would drink right from the coconut. Lauren would hand weave a hat out of palm tree leaves, so cool. Then kicking back on the hammock with a cold beverage oh yeah. This place is for someone who wants to leave the crowds behind and enjoy this special island. Also we can't forget Lupe' he is a cool dog super friendly and was always happy to see you after a full day of adventures on the island. I would recommend this place to all my friends.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, pet owners.

We have found our little paradise on Molokai. The cottage was very comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped. The Lanai with lush tropical setting around was very cozy and we had a lot of fun with the geckos. Our caretaker Lauren was very nice and helpful. In face of late arrival, she welcomed us with kukui nut leis and gave us the opportunity to buy some food in Kaunakakai before we went to the property. On this beautiful peaceful location, right on the water the best thing to do is to relax in the hammock with great ocean view. We enjoyed the time on Molokai and we plan to come back as soon as possible… We would recommend this property to our friends!Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

My wife and I stayed in the beach house at Hale Kawaikapu with our son and daughter-in-law and daughter and son-in-law from January 26 to February 3, 2012, and had a marvelous time, due in large part to the spacious accommodations, lovely secluded grounds and friendly attentiveness of Lauren and James. Our flight from Oahu was 3 hours late, but that did not perturb Lauren, who waited patiently for our eventual arrival and then greeted us with kukui nut leis and hugs. During a phone conversation while we still were waiting for a flight (with much misinformation from Island Air, which unfortunately was our only choice of airlines to Molokai at the time. Avoid Island Air if you can.), Lauren said that there was a woman in downtown Kaunakakai selling fresh shrimp from the back of her pickup, and that if we wanted shrimp, Lauren would reserve some for us. We got the last 4 lbs. and, boy, were they fresh! Freshest, tastiest shrimp we ever had. We also went on a fantastic hike with Lauren and James in the Kamakou preserve. We had our own expert along with us to identify the plants, since my daughter is an Early Detection Botanist with the Bishop Museum. She was thrilled to see all of the native plants. My daughter-in-law and son, who is a master diver, had one of the best diving experiences in his life with Walter, local diver and guide who was recommended by Lauren. They then were invited to Walter’s house for a true Hawaiian family luau that included their catch from diving. Also, the sunrises were spectacular, as were the views of whales breaching off shore. Well, I could go on and on about our wonderful stay at Hale Kawaikapu. Suffice it to say, stay there if you are on Molokai.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

While we technically considered this to be our honeymoon, my wife and I hardly need an excuse to go to Hawaii. Molokai offers everything I look for in a Hawaiian vacation: stunning scenery, seclusion, beautiful water and no tall buildings. We stayed in the cabin on this property and it was perfect. We awoke every morning before 6 to watch the sun rise and take a walk along the shore with our morning coffee. We were fortunate enough to Lupe, the local dog, join us every day and keep us company. He's very sweet. The accomodations were great; I wouldn't change a thing. The Jeep was totally reliable and took us from end to end of the small island daily. Leading up to the vacation our dealings with the owner, Kirby, were extremely pleasant. Even more so were the caretakers, Lauren and James, who embraced us and offered us all the help we could ask for while maintaining a respectful distance. I really hope to get back there one day, and I'm willing to bet it won't have changed a bit.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, tourists without a car.

My Boyfriend and I stayed at house next door (owned by the same people). It was amazing! It was very peaceful and secluded with a great view of Maui. The kitchen was well equipped and the Lanai allowed for the perfect breeze to flow throughout the home. Joanne and Ed, the caretakers, were very nice and helpful (no matter what they were but a phone call away). The island was tranquil, away from all the hustle and bustle. We went on mini adventures around the island. WE LOVED the island and the house and can't wait to return :) P.S. The jeep came in handy! This is not a place to be without a means of transportation.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

Kirby, Barry & June are wonderful. Their cottage exceeded our expectations, as did Moloka'i! Ed & Jo-An Foster took care of everything, from start to finish! We were shown such wonderful hospitality and yet we had plenty of privacy. A great balance from a top notch caretaker. Our guide, Mercury Dudoit, treated us to a few hikes around Moloka'i. He was so enjoyable and friendly. I highly recommend this rental cottage, along with the vehicle which was so needed on the island. A great time was had by all, and that is priceless!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners.

We loved the cottage and property. It was cute, cozy and clean. Though there was nothing fancy about the cottage it was very comfortable and well represented in the web photos. The grounds are full of nature, ocean, birds, pretty landscaping, interesting spiders (outside) but beware of falling coconuts! The weather was great and sleeping very peaceful. Bring ear plugs though because there are plenty of night sounds to keep the sound sensitive awake. Ed and JoAn were very helpful with information, free fresh eggs and friendly conversations. I had hoped for a little better conditions in the waters off the cottage. There was good snorkeling if you went out a way, but it took at least 30-45 minutes of snorkeling to get near the fringe reef where all the worthwhile snorkeling was. Since that was my biggest hope I was a bit disappointed but that's no fault of the property or property owners. The Jeep got us around but the air conditioning was iffy and the shocks were rough. Better than paying $500 for a car though, it was just fine for the little travel we did. The cottage is 17 miles from town, about a 30 minute drive but there is also a little store about 2 miles away. Great ocean viewing just a few steps from the door with lawn chairs, a picnic table or a hammock at the water's edge. We were there in January and saw several whale sightings in the distance. This is a great place for adult relaxation, reading, sleeping, sunbathing. Wouldn't be much for kids to do though unless you brought it with you. There are good beach swimming areas within a three miles, and a bit of snorkeling there too. I highly recommend the hike to the Halawa waterfalls. It was great fun and quite the experience when it poured down rain the whole way back. Ed has the contact info for a great local guide who lives near the falls. Bring your water shoes and swim in the waterfall pool...it's cold and refreshing. Bring your camera and plastic bags for it in case it starts raining.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, pet owners.

We woke up to sunrise over Maui from the loft bedroom! Throw in a 4-wheel drive for the price - this lovely A-frame is a real deal. A perfect romantic anniversary for us. The hosts were absolutely wonderful and pick up at the airport no less. As advertised and then some! Quiet and clean, I'm recommending this place to all my friends.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, tourists without a car.
