We are Ken and Liz Kushner from Tallahassee, Florida. Ken is a math teacher at Lincoln High School and Liz is a registered nurse at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. We have a grown son, Jordan. Retirement is right around the corner for us, and we look forward to having lots of free time to enjoy traveling, hiking, playing tennis, woodworking, golfing, hunting, antiquing, reading, and fishing.

Why Owner chose Shoal Creek
We enjoy the serenity that the mountains have to offer. Bear Paw, while maintaining its rustic charm, has amenities that we enjoy including the pool, marina, and tennis courts. We also appreciate the fact that it is a gated community and that the national forest surrounds us. There is no thru traffic, which makes it a very peaceful place.
What makes this House unique
We enjoy being able to go boating and fishing at the marina, which is inside Bear Paw. The tennis courts are convenient so that we can enjoy a game of tennis without having to travel to courts. The Olympic-size swimming pool is a nice place to meet people who live in Bear Paw or are vacationing from other areas. There is also a playground for children adjacent to the swimming pool and a covered pavilion which is nice for family reunions. The roads in Bear Paw are well-maintained, so taking long walks is easy.

Nice, Comfortable Home!
We enjoyed our stay in this nice mountain home. It is located in a private mountain setting and was not hard to get to. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything we needed to cook meals and there were several nice restaurants nearby. We hope to come back again soon! Thanks to the Kushner's for sharing their home with us.
Nice but...we wish we would have known these things...
The home was very nice...no complaints there, but...we would have like to have known these things... in the overview it states there is a gas fireplace, so we "assumed" that it would work, (that's one thing we look for, especially in late Oct. as the weather is very cool and we look forward to a fireplace) we followed all the directions on how to work it that they had posted on the frig. but no luck...we called the Kushner's and were told that the gas isn't turned on until "sometime" in Nov., this was very misleading and for us would have been a DEAL BREAKER. Liz Kushner did call and have someone come late the next day and turn on the pilot light but after about an hour it quit working, I called Liz and she said "the pilot light line gets clogged, oh well we tried". We've rented other homes this time of year for the past 10 yrs. and have never had this problem. Also it states that linen's are provided....it didn't say clearly that this doesn't include towels...we had to go out and buy towels...we have never had to do this either and since we fly in, it's not convenient to pack bath towels, hand towels & wash clothes.
Also realize that this house is a long way in from the main road and has VERY steep winding roads and is difficult to find.
If none of these things are an issue for you then you will love it here!
Just hung out with the family and had a great time. The house was great!
Away from it all! Yippee!
If you are looking for a wonderful place to just get away from it all. This is the place for you, we loved it.
Quiet and serene, we were just a little early for the fall leaves, but still saw some awesome nature around the area. Be prepared to travel some very narrow and rough roads in this part of NC. Make sure to get up early and watch the Smoke on the Smokies.
Thank you Ken for providing such an awesome place for people to get away from it all in luxury.
Away from it all...
We enjoyed our stay at Bear Paw. The cabin was spacious and had everything you could need. Big enough to give everybody there own space. Owner was very accessible and helpful. Thirty to forty-five minutes from a town so stock up before you get there. Get there before dark and don't trust your Garmin!
