Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-10)
The log cabin was originally built in 1838. In the mid seventies the cabin was relocated from nearby onto a modern foundation perched upon the top of the hill. At this time of reconstruction a back kitchen & dining room, garage, second floor with 3 bedrooms and 3 covered/enclosed porches were added. Over the past few years the interior has been renovated and modernized. What a charming setting for a very private little getaway or busy family gathering. With plenty of overflow space, all the kids can run and play right out front on the hills of grass while the adults relax on the porches enjoying the sound of running brooks and the spring fed waterwheel. Peace and seclusion are just a few of the attributes found here. A Captain's Cabin on 'Little Onion Mountain' has over five acres to roam without ever leaving the property. Yet it's conveniently located minutes to downtown Franklin, grocery stores, restaurants and 5-20 miles from 4 fabulous waterfalls, world class hiking in the Nantahala National Forest and the town of Highlands.

The only thing better than visiting the captain's cabin is the rare occassion of the captain's company.
I spend the year waiting to get back. The pictures don't show the awesome hammocks on the screened in poarch or near by lakes and rivers.
Fabulous and Fun
The cabin was even better than expected! It's a perfect spot tucked up on the mountain but close to loads of fun things to do. Waking to the fresh mountain breezes each morning was a slice of heaven. I enjoyed tea every morning on one of the screened porches taking is the beautiful view with the sounds of nature waking me up while the children slept in peacefully. We went rafting, hiking, waterfall climbing, swimming in the pond, learned about gems at the nearby museum and of course boutique shopping. The cabin itself was great! The beds were comfy, the bathrooms clean, plenty of hot water for showers for the whole group, linens, everything supplied. We grilled and enjoyed most of our meals there, including smores by the fire each night. We look forward to returning again and highly recommend the Captain's Cabin for a vacation anytime of year.
Magnificent property and location
My family visited there this summer. My kids really enjoyed the tire swing and exploring the property. The cabin was clean and there was plenty of space for all of the kids. I found the cabin to be true to it's description but much better in person. We also enjoyed the cute downtown area of Franklin and mining for treasures. Thank you for a wonderful experience in Franklin, NC.
Great getaway for family & friends!
SPACIOUS cabin! Great vacation for kids/families. We enjoyed sightseeing, fishing, gem mining, hiking, even swimming at the beach! Highly recommend this property.
Dream base for touring Motorcyclists
We spent 4 nights at the Captain's Cabin. We used it as a base for the best motorcycle touring area in the eastern US. Less than 50 miles from the "bucket list" ride called "Tail of the Dragon," at Deal's Gap. Everyday we found an equally beautiful and challenging rides; riding under Brial Veil Falls, taking a long leg on the Blue Ridge Parkway...and afterwards cool out on the front porch or on the cool nights- in front of the big stone fireplace. That is; after putting the bikes to bed in the large well lit garage. All things convenient in the town of Franklin minutes away. Some very toney villages nearby like Sapphire and Cashiers...Fantastic. Hope to return next spring.
relaxing and magnificent
Just returned from a peaceful secluded vacation from this cabin. We had everything we needed for a relaxing vacation. The cabin was clean and supplied with all necessities. We especially loved sitting on the porch with the rocking chairs. I will definitely be traveling back to this cabin.
Jen & Mike - Glad you had such a great time. Hope you have the same great weather when you return this fall as you enjoyed on your springtime visit.
Trout & fly fishing, Gem Mining, Cherokee Indian reservation, Casino, Waterfalls & Lakes & National Parks.
