In the 70s and 80s, SoHo (short for "South of Houston Street") became synonymous with the artist's lifestyle, as painters and sculptors took over the Manhattan neighborhood's former commercial lofts. Now, its gorgeous cast-iron facades and cobblestone streets provide a home for designer boutiques, upscale shops and restaurants, and art galleries. A neighborhood known for its artist community must have a couple of museums within its borders, right? Right. The Drawing Center is the only fine arts institution in the U.S. to focus solely on drawings, both historical and contemporary. The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art is also unique _ the only dedicated LGBTQ art museum in the world.
More than just a pretty (cast-iron) face
SoHo is celebrated for its shopping. The posh boutiques and galleries sell fine art, designer duds, and fancy furniture, while street vendors line the sidewalks offering just about everything else. History buffs can revel in a walking tour of SoHo's Historic Cast-Iron District, lined with such gems as the Haughwout Building, the oldest complete cast-iron facade in the city (built in 1857). When the kids get restless, Vesuvio Playground, named after the locally beloved owner of Vesuvio Bakery, is a great place for them to run free.

Set smack in the middle of Lower Manhattan, SoHo enjoys New York City's humid, subtropical climate. Winters are cold and damp, but the ocean's influence keeps temperatures from going to extremes. Snowfall is common from December through early March, and winter lows sink below freezing but above 10 degrees. Summers are warm and sometimes sweltering, so look for a SoHo vacation rental with air conditioning. Spring and fall range from wet and windy to sunny and warm.
