Overview

About the property

Intimate Studio with Private Balcony, Sleeps 1-2, Steps From The Beach

The Red Ginger Suite is an intimate studio and has it's own private balcony providing a city view of Waikiki. With historic Waikiki Beach is just outside the hotel lobby, the Red Ginger will make a perfect home base for exploring Honolulu and the rest of Oahu.

An expansive roof deck on top of the hotel, just one floor above the studio, provides a bird's eye view of Diamond Head. There are lounge chairs for sunbathing and tables for alfresco dining. No one else in Waikiki has a better view of the sun setting into the Pacific. Kapiolani Park is just across the street and offers the Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, the Royal Hawaiian Bandstand, tennis courts, soccer fields, archery ranges, weekend art shows and the city's Sunset on the Beach free concerts and movies - all this in its 500 green acres.

One of the main reasons for coming to Hawaii is of course the sun and sand. Surfing, stand up board paddling, outrigger canoeing, swimming and simply lounging on the beach are all just a few steps from the Red Ginger Suite.

Hawaii is the crossroads of the Pacific and its culinary offerings reflect that abundantly, so while the Red Ginger Suite has a kitchen and microwave, you are a short walk away from countless cafes and restaurants catering to every taste and price range. Similarly, if you can get yourself out of the water and away from the beach there is a lot of shopping to be done in Waikiki, and the many other shopping venues just a short drive away.

The Red Ginger Suite is located at the end of Waikiki. Kapahulu Avenue provides easy access to the freeway, and makes getting in and out of the area very easy because you avoid all the traffic in the heart of Waikiki. This is perfect for when you decide to explore the rest that Oahu has to offer.

About Kevin Lum

Born and raised in Honolulu, I currently live on the Mainland, but spend a lot of time in Hawaii. I have worked in the travel industry for over 35 years and have explored numerous countries around the world. I can relate to what travelers are looking for in a vacation rental because I'm looking for the same things - cleanliness, location and value.

Kevin Lum purchased this condo in 2013

Why Kevin Lum chose South Oahu

I grew up in Honolulu and spent a lot of time playing at the beach and on the sea wall that is less than 30 steps from the condo. Kapiolani Park was a place for family gatherings, concerts at the Shell, and of course the Zoo. Waikiki was a lot slower and quieter when I was a kid, but even today I think visitors will still find it to be a special place. If you walk down to the Diamond Head end of Kalakaua Avenue - it's still like it was in the old days.

What makes this condo unique

LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION!

While being at the 'end' of Waikiki might sound like you are away from all the action, that just isn't the case. Everything Waikiki has to offer is just a short walk away, but you don't have to be in the middle of the hustle and traffic. Being on the end of Waikiki makes getting in and out of the area, if you are driving, much easier than visitors staying in the middle of the high-rises. Saving the best for last, being on the end of Waikiki means there is nothing else between you and Diamond Head except the big green expanse of Kapiolani Park. Head up to the roof deck and see for yourself! In the morning it's an amazing place to have coffee, watch the sun peek over the Koolau Mountains and light up Diamond Head, listen to the monkeys in the Zoo, and see the elephants out for a stroll. Only in Hawaii!

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is such a great place! Location can't be beat. Beautiful view of the sunset and Diamond Head from the 10th floor balcony. There's a bar you can access from the 2nd floor and a decent diner on the first floor! Centrally located with a bunch of shopping down the street, an ABC store next door, and the gorgeous Waikiki beach just steps away!

Parking can be a little rough. There's free street parking down Kalakaua Ave (take a left at intersection of Kapahulu and Kalakaua), but you have to be careful to read the signs as there are several no parking areas down there. There's also parking in the small zoo lot for a dollar per hour. Some people park there overnight although technically you're not supposed to. We didn't want to chance it.

Kevin was super helpful and communicative, we couldn't have asked for a better host. The bed was super comfy, and the apartment (although small) was cutely decorated and cozy! There is a small window unit AC that did the trick and kept us cool in the evenings. All we needed was a place to crash in the evenings after spending all day exploring. This fit the bill perfectly. Mahalo!

Great location next to the beach

  • 5 of 5

The Red Ginger Apartment is located in the Grand Wakiki Hotel next to Queens Beach in Wakiki. It's literally a 2 minute walk to the beach. Queens Beach has a breakwater with a sheltered area for swimming and snorkeling. The reef extends under the breakwater so it's easy to see common reef fish like the Hummuhummunicunicuapua'a, the Hawaiian state fish. For the lazy and those who don't want to get wet, there is a nearby pier where people toss bread crumbs into the water and it's possible to see lots of common reef fish competing with birds and crabs for the food. The Zoo is across the street and it's worth the effort to go see Galapagos Tortoises. We had a car and parked it at a free city lot a block away next to the Honolulu band shell. We stayed a week and did a lot of day trips throughout Oahu so it was good to have a car and find free parking. The apartment is away from the busiest part of the Wakiki, but only a 15 minute walk to the center of everything. The apartment itself is cozy and plenty comfortable for a couple. The kitchen was well stocked with microwave, coffee maker, toaster, etc. The TV and channel selection were fine. We stayed a week. The only complaint is the noise from neighboring air conditioners that run all day and all night. Kevin was easy to communicate with and responsive to any questions we had.

Perfect location!

  • 4 of 5

The Red Ginger suite was perfect for my husband and my stay for a week in Honolulu. Great location and clean suite. Kevin was a pleasure to deal with and was very quick to respond to inquires. The two burner stovetop was great for breakfast in the mornings and the view from the 10th floor patio is second to none. My only suggestion for improvement would be to raise the bed a few inches to allow for luggage storage underneath just to get it out of the way. There was room for our carry-on luggage to fit under our hung clothes in the little bathroom closet but we kept our main bag under the kitchen table. Minor minor detail though. Great little condo with a fantastic location and owner.

Affordable and compact, great location

  • 4 of 5

A small affordable studio at the quieter end of Waikiki only half a block from the beach. Ideal for one person, cozy for two. Clean and pleasantly furnished, there are adequate kitchen items to prepare simple meals. During our stay in Jan, we didn't need the A/C but there was some noise from other A/C units and general activities behind the building. Close to some great snorkeling and local restaurants a short walk up Kapahulu.

Owner's Response: Always happy to hear when guests agree that the Red Ginger is well located in Waikiki. The beach is nearby and while the center of Waikiki is a short stroll away - the rest of Honolulu is easily accessible. Glad to see you took advantage of the local spots along Kapahulu. Hope to welcome you back to the Islands in the future.
