About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Bath Ocean Front View

Turtle's Nest is one of the best spots on Little Gasparilla Island for watching the sunset! This single level home rests at the edge of the sand dunes and has a west-facing screened deck that is a perfect gathering place for watching sunsets. Accommodations include three bedrooms and two baths on the main floor and an outdoor shower below. The master has a queen bed & private bathroom, while the guest room queen and the bunk room (with two sets of bunk beds) share a separate full bath. The home has recently been outfitted with all new appliances and has WiFi and satellite TV. We also offer services of a meet and greet and house cleaning at no additional fee. Our caretaker Paul can be contracted for additional a la carte concierge services should need arise during your stay that include options such as transportaton, grocery shopping, fishing outings and use of golf carts!

Turtle's Nest is perfect for families or couples to enjoy. Includes a fully-equipped kitchen, dining and living areas, screened deck, Satellite TV, WIFI, a VCR player, movie library, washer/dryer, new AC unit and all new stainless steel kitchen appliances.

As part of the barrier island chain that includes Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Little Gasparilla offers the peace and quiet that those busy islands used to have. Accessible only by water taxi, Little Gasparilla has fewer tourists, no paved roads, no cars, no high-rises and no crowds on the beach. You vacation with dolphins, ospreys and sea turtles instead!

There’s great fishing from the beach or the dock, and both children & adults will enjoy shelling, swimming, snorkeling or simply enjoying the sun. With an island priority of protecting the sea turtles from light pollution, you’ll see more stars than you might think possible. And while there’s daily water-taxi service between the island and the mainland, we bet you’ll want to stay put once you’ve arrived.

Golf carts can be rented, but most prefer walking the sandy paths that run the length of the island. There’s an excellent fresh-fish market (Miss Cindy's) just across Placida Bay, and many restaurants and gift shops in the nearby towns of Boca Grande and Placida –– a few reachable by water-taxi.

A vacation on Little Gasparilla will be one of your best holidays ever –– All you need are groceries & flip flops and you too will be ready to rest and be thankful!

About Cole Smith

I am a 'Florida Girl' by birth and heart. You can always find me in the sunshine. I was born and raised in Bartow, Florida. I have lived in Georgia and Western North Carolina but I have always considered Florida my home.

Cole Smith purchased this house in 1984

Why Cole Smith chose Placida

LGI reminds me of the beach get-a-way weekends I used to enjoy as a child. After my own children were grown I sought out a little sunny piece of Florida to call my own. I have spent over seventeen years living on island time at LGI. I have loved both the solitude and the close-knit community of friends that are my neighbors. I love to gather people together and my dream of being able to share the natural beauty of Florida with my children and grandchildren became a reality with their many fun-in-the-sun visits. With the ocean view from the front porch, our deck became the most popular place for our island friends to meet up to watch the sunset. Turtle's Nest has been a perfect place to gather with friends and family and to rest and be thankful.

What makes this house unique

Turtle's Nest is ocean front and sits directly on an access path just footsteps away from the Gulf Shore. The screened-in west-facing porch is a real bonus and is especially nice for gathering to watch the sunset. A favorite feature is the hammock. There are four sleep pads if kids or adults would like to camp out on the screened-in deck. There is a small outdoor grill available as well as a badminton set, and of course beach chairs and an large shade umbrella for guests to use.

Serene, easy, beautiful

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful place for a quiet, cozy family getaway. The house was comfortable and simple with everything we needed, and we truly felt like the whole beach belonged to us. Our little dog had the time of her life, just a few steps away from the ocean. At first we were a little worried about being isolated, but Paul the caretaker for the place is terrific and just a txt away for anything you run out of or need help with.

We rented a boat one day and would highly recommend -- it's easy to get around even for a novice captain and you can see dolphins and some of the nearby islands and even dock for lunch at a few. We rented ours from Captain Stu, who had his number on a pamphlet at the bait shop at Eldred's.

All in, it's a perfect spot for getting off the grid (though the wifi is totally serviceable when you need it).

Cozy beach shack with lots of charm

  • 4 of 5

We ventured from Dallas all the way to Little Gasparilla Island for a quiet retreat with the kids. After 18 hrs of driving, we were excited to see what LGI had in store for us. The taxi to and from the island was fun with all our gear and it really made it feel like a retreat away from the world. The caretaker, Paul was great and we had him do our grocery shopping in advance. I was hesitant about doing this as we were shopping for 6 people for a week, but he nailed it and it was pretty great to walk into a house fully stocked with your selected items. Plus bringing all that food would have been just more hassle. Its definitely worth the small fee. After checking out the house and getting unpacked we went to check out the beach.

This is where the trip started to turn ugly. We walked the quick steps to the beach and found the water orange with seaweed everywhere along with literally hundreds and hundreds of dead fish that lined the miles of beach. Were were devastated. Apparently the entire region was having a battle with Red Tide that was going on week 4 when we arrived. Needless to say we were very disappointed that no one let us know about it as it would have definitely altered our plans. The smell of dead fish, and the toxic air that was created by the red tide was pretty bad. We did our best to make the best of the situation and spent a few hours the first day digging huge pits and burying hundreds of fish. That helped a little with the scenery and smell but the toxic air stung your eyes so you couldn't stay at the beach too long. The owner should have called to prepare us for this as it was not a new situation and it was such an issue in the area that the news was covering it regularly.

Now, with that dilemma mentioned, I must say the overall environment of LGI was incredible. I cant imagine what this place would be like with clear waters and Non-toxic air. We rented a golf cart through Paul the caretaker and spent a lot of time exploring the sandy roads, visiting other beach areas, catching gopher tortoises, crabs, snakes, and all sorts of wildlife. The breeze off the ocean was great and kept the evening cool. We spent hours in the screened in porch reading and playing games and we loved that.

The island is great, the location perfect, the house was super fun with its old Florida beach charm. Paul the caretaker is key to the trip, use him! Overall, I'd come again, BUT I'd check the beach forecast in advance.

Wonderful Beach Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Turtle’s Nest is a fantastic home away from home! Right on the beach facing west, the sunsets couldn’t have been better. It’s an easy walk to the bay for fishing off the dock and catching the water taxi. The kitchen is fully functioning with modern appliances and amenities. The owner and caretaker couldn’t have been more friendly or accommodating. Loved our stay!

Looking to avoid kitschy, touristy nonsense? This is 100% the place.

My wife, our dog and I booked this home for our honeymoon and it could not have been more perfect. It was an adventure in the dark and the rain getting there our first night but from the moment we woke up the next morning until we checked out several days later we were in awe. We constantly found ourselves sitting on the beach or in the wonderful screened in porch saying, "Wow.". The white, sandy beaches were practically empty the entire week. We asked and it sounds like we picked a good week, but the benefit of the relative difficulty in accessing the island for the average tourist (it's not actually that difficult) is that the beaches couldn't POSSIBLY get that crowded - even at their worst. The wildlife was abundant too! There are Gopher Tortoises burrowing right in front of the house and dolphins were swimming within 10 feet of shore. For 6 days, we didn't leave the house or the beach. We saw no need to go into the interior of the island or back to the mainland because the house and the beach had everything we could ever need. Which brings me to the most convenient part of the house - Paul, the concierge. The trip would have been great either way, but Paul took it to the next level. We spoke to him prior to our arrival and not only did he have all the groceries for our entire week waiting for us at the house, but he provided the boat service for us across the bay to the island when we arrived late in the evening and departed a week later AND he took us out on a dolphin/manatee finding adventure on his boat later in the week, as well. He works for tips, he's an expert on the area, and he couldn't be a nicer guy. He checked in on us without being intrusive and was incredibly helpful when we needed him. If you're willing to cook on your vacation and aren't interested in some of the stereotypical, touristy, commercial BS most beaches like this have, we can't recommend this house enough. We are already trying to figure out a way to get back to this same house with our family as soon as possible. It's a hike from our home in western NC, but it's 100% worth it. One warning: Little Gasparilla Island is promoted as dog-friendly - and it is - but for a couple months each year local folks are (rightfully) protective of the sea turtle and bird populations nesting on the island. Leashes are expected. 10/10, would/will definitely book again.

Coral Gables

This rustic, wooden house is surrounded by wild dunes and perfect for a relaxing week.

  • 5 of 5

The house is comfortable and has a large screened porch. The kitechen/dining room/living room area is open and made for fun family time. There were beach chairs and a BBQ down below. The views are spectacular. It's in a quiet area, 3/4 the way down near the southern tip of LGI. This was our third visit to the island and we would rent again.

Car: not necessary

Parking at Eldred's Marina is available for 6$ per day and accepts cash only. The water taxi 'Pirate Taxi' can be booked for transport to and from the island. If you have your own boat, we have a dock slot available on the Marina side of LGI. It is important to bring all food and necessary items as there is no store on Little Gasparilla Island. It is important to bring a good supply of drinking water. There is a golf cart rental service on the island and advance reservations are suggested. Our home is located at about the mid point of the island and borders the Gulf side shore.
