4-bedroom, 3 bath home, WiFi, cable TV, window air conditioners, near dining!
Our first floor has a fully open floor plan with an living room with cable TV, entry way, dining area, kitchen, 1/2 bath and spacious mudroom with attached laundry. Off of the kitchen is the deck with gas grill (the hot tub is not filled and not for rental use) and as you walk into the backyard you take a flagstone pathway to our patio ready for breakfasts, lunches or dinners outside under the shade of a large maple tree. Back in the house, off of the entry way you enter the "Michigan" den with a queen sleeper sofa couch, cable TV, and office desks along with book cases complete with books for your casual reading. Off of the office we have the only 1st floor bedroom with a queen bed and private 3/4 bath.
The second floor stairwell ends at the smallest bedroom, our youngest daughter's, where you will find a single bed. The next room is larger, our eldest daughter's, and includes a double and single bed. The only bathroom on the second floor (a full bath) is newly remodeled. The last room is our master bedroom with a queen bed.
The driveway includes parking (3, maybe 4 cars max). We ask that you do not park on the side lawn. The garage is not for renter use. The backyard includes a tree house but we ask that you allow small children to use it with supervision as the stairs are steep. We have a bin of outdoor toys to use in the backyard, too.
We DO NOT have central air conditioning. We do have window units in the two larger upstairs bedrooms, the downstairs bedroom and in the family room.
Our home is also NOT toddler friendly, due to the steep staircase and the older railing upstairs. The bars along the stairwell are wide enough apart to allow a small child to slip through and fall down the stairs. For this reason, we are NOT a good home for toddlers or crawling infants.

About Joe Macaluso
Joe grew up in Jackson, MI and went to the University of Michigan and received his BA in History and became a middle school teacher. He started his career in Elk Rapids Schools and has been there for 15+ years now as a social studies teacher. He coaches girls volleyball and is an active technology in education user. Amanda grew up in Australia and first came to the United States in the early 1990s as a camp counselor. She continued to return and met Joe in the summer of 1998 in the summer camping industry. She currently is the Camp Director at YMCA Camp Arbutus Hayo-Went-Ha in Traverse City and has been there 20+ years. Joe and Amanda have two beautiful daughters who enjoy their summers at the camp we reside at for 10 weeks, allowing us to rent our home to you. =)
Joe Macaluso purchased this House in 2006
Why Joe Macaluso chose Elk Rapids
This is our home for all but 10 -12 weeks of the year while we are at our summer job at YMCA Camp Arbutus Hayo-Went-Ha for Girls. While owning since 2006, we've decided to rent our home the last few summers. We are excited to share the joy we experience living in Elk Rapids with guests from around the world now. =)
What makes this House unique
We love the open floor plan on the main level, allowing you to be in the action from any room. The spacious backyard and beautiful big maple tree in the backyard were a draw as was the tree house already built when our girls were younger. =) We love the easy access to the Village Market grocery store and the schools where Joe works and our daughters attend school.

We really enjoyed our family vacation in Elk Rapids. The house worked out perfectly.
The house was in a great location to town and the grocery store. Joe Macaluso was very nice to work with.
Outstanding as always!
The house is spacious, well laid out, and very convenient to town. We love staying here--and we'll be back!
Great updated home in Elk Rapids; comfortable accommodations for our group of 9.
My sister's family and I rented this home for our vacation in Elk Rapids this year. Our group of 9 had plenty of room to spread out. This is a lovely updated home. It was clean and had all of the amenities of being "at home." We had a lovely time and we had great weather all week long. The house is not located in the village, but still within 15 minute walking distance to Dam Beach and town and near the market.
Pleasant stay in a centrally located town
Our extended family of 9 (5 adults and 4 children) had a pleasant one-week stay here in August of 2015. This was our second year using VRBO and each year we inquired about several options. The owner of this home was the most responsive, both as far as how quickly he replied each time, before and during our stay, and as far as how generous he was with helpful information, etc. The house is very spacious, with plenty of room for our large party. It is well stocked with kitchen equipment, laundry facilities, etc. The inside has a nice, old farmhouse charm mixed with much appreciated updated bathrooms. The backyard was a nice addition for our kids, although we were out and about most days so did not use it as we thought we might. The home is located in a quiet, residential, neighborhood either a few minute drive from downtown Elk Rapids or a 10-15 minute walk. There is a playground at the school two blocks away which we used one day. As a town, Elk Rapids is small and quaint. We have travelled extensively throughout northern Michigan, hitting most of the lakeside towns along the way. While Elk Rapids does not have nearly as many restaurants and shops to offer as Traverse City, Charlevoix, or Petosky, we found the beaches of Elk Rapids to be a hidden treasure that we enjoyed more than the larger, neighboring town beaches. There are two beaches right downtown, a small, quiet strip of white sand to one side of the harbor and a larger beach on the other, complete with playground (in the sand), bathrooms, and shallow inlet leading to the river that runs through the downtown area. The beaches both have great sand and calm waters. From this second beach you can easily walk to the downtown shops and restaurants in just a few minutes. We only frequented 2-3 restaurants, an upscale one downtown, which we all enjoyed, and a few on the "outskirts" which we'd give mixed reviews. From Elk Rapids we traveled to Traverse City (30 min), Sleeping Bear Dunes (1 hr), Charlevoix (35 min), Petosky (50 min), and JV Outfitters river rafting (40 min). We therefore felt it was a great jumping off point for us as we like to explore. Even if you stay put, however, the beach really does beat out others in the area (Petosky is mostly rocky, Charlevoix can have rough waters, and Traverse City's is next to a busy road). Also, because it has remained smaller, Elk Rapids has held on to that small town feel we love in northern Michigan.
Great place to stay!
This house is roomy, comfortable, clean, and well appointed. All the comforts of home, and in a great location as well! My family and I had a great vacation here, and we recommend it highly.
Elk Rapids has been our personal home since 2006 and we know you will enjoy all of the charm and quaintness that well fell in love with from the start. If eating out, start your days at either the Harbor Cafe, a great "mom and pop" breakfast stop or Java Jones Coffee Shop for any number of espresso drinks and breakfast pastry options along with a hearty oatmeal or quiche. Since it's summer, you'll want to enjoy the beach and the local favorite is the "Dam Beach", known for is secluded location and sandy beaches & swim area, located just across US31 to the right in Grand Traverse Bay. Memorial Park is in town further where you can also swim, play basketball, beach volleyball or just sit in the park, plan a BBQ and watch the kids play on the playground or swim in the River. When you're ready for some food, downtown offers many options for lunch including Chef Charles, home to the best pizza in town while also offering sandwiches and salads or the Moose, our local hot spot party store complete with a wide selection of liquor, beer and wine. If you're up for a more upscale lunch, Siren Hall is a can't miss for superb, big city-style eating at a reasonable price. Needing a change from the beach after lunch? Try Right Tree Adventure Rentals where you can rent a variety of outdoor equipment that they deliver direct to your location within 3 miles of town! Elk River Marina offers a great selection of water craft to rent and take into beautiful Elk Lake. Travel through Lake Skegemog, down the Torch River and into Torch Lake for an all day adventure on the sand bar you won't forget! When you're ready for some quiet time, check out the movie playing at the local Elk Rapids Cinema where you can't beat the prices for a ticket, popcorn, candy and pop anywhere around. Downtown offers many shopping opportunities for clothing, sweets, collectibles and many local services such as Corner Druggist, Elk Rapids Chiropractic Center (where you can get the best massage of your life from Amie, Sylvia or Haley!), Hufford Vision, a number of dentists the local post office and, hopefully open for Summer 2015, our new wine shop and deli! If you're looking for a nice place to eat we highly recommend walking to Pearls, just near the house, where you'll be treated to the best that New Orleans cuisine can offer right here in Elk Rapids! Siren Hall is also an upscale favorite for it's superb seafood, grills, salads and pizzas along with a great wine selection. The Local, also only a 5 minute walk from our house and has yet to open, plans to serve a menu of mainly "local" foods in season. The Town Club downtown serves a decent selection of bar food--the fried pita wedges are a favorite along with the gyro. As far as events go, check out Wednesday Evening on River Street, every Wednesday in the summer for live music, great eats including T.J. Charlies BBQ Ribs meal which sells out fast and Siren Halls small fish plates which are heavenly. Don't forget to grab a bag of fresh pop kettle corn and a fresh squeezed lemonade. Enjoy! The marquee event for Elk Rapids is our Harbor Days Festival! This summer it runs from August 6 - 9th, 2016. This 4 day event features something for everyone, include the carnival, 5 or 10K Harbor Run, Kids Day and the annual fireworks display on the last night over the Bay. We LOVE living in community of Elk Rapids and truly hope you will experience the same feelings during your week stay with us!

Additional information about rental rates
I use both the Security Damage Protection Insurance (or cash deposit option) AND a small Refundable Security Deposit for different reasons. The first would be used for major breakages or damages equal to the value of some of our most valuable possessions to replace/fix them. The latter Refundable charge would cover quick expenses that require immediate access to cash: additional cleanings beyond normal use, lost keys, etc. Please feel free to ask about either charge for further explanation. :)
