About the property

6 BR 2 1/2 Bath in the Heart of Montreat

Centrally located in Montreat, 5 minute walk to Lake Susan and 20 minute drive to Asheville.

NEW BUNKROOM ADDED! Now sleeps 22 in beds. See bedroom details and photos. Groups over 12 people will automatically have access to the new bunk room. Smaller parties may inquire about additional cost for use of the bunk room.

This 6 bedroom home is set up perfectly for groups and families alike.

Enjoy relaxing on the large covered front porch, reading a book in a hammock in the back yard (pack your Eno!), or grilling on the large back deck.

The main floor includes a covered front porch, large outdoor deck, kitchen, den, and dining room as well as a sitting room/bedroom with bunk beds and adjoining 1/2 bath. Upstairs are 4 more bedrooms equipped with individual sinks and a full bath with shower (no sink in bath).

A full bath in the basement has 2 separate showers for larger parties and the NEW large adjoining bunk room has 2 twins, 2 daybeds with trundles, and 2 COOL built in wall bunks (smaller than a twin but great for teens and kids!). ***This bunk room will automatically be available for groups over 12 people***.

Dining table has chairs for up to 8 and 3 more at kitchen bar. Plenty more dining areas are available on adjoining large back deck and also large front porch (both outdoors). Living room comfortably seats 7-9 in front of large tv and open dining room adjoins for more seating for larger groups.

Like many Montreat homes, there are 20+ steps to enter the home from the parking area below the house. Showers are located on the top floor and basement area, requiring stair climbs to both (basement stairs are fairly steep). If you, or someone in your party has difficulty with walking or climbing stairs, you may want to take this into consideration.

4 of the 6 bedrooms are furnished with bunk beds, allowing us to accomodate youth groups and families, alike. Please take a moment to view all of the photos, as the bedding arrangements may not work for some (elderly, couples, etc).

**Please note, Boardwalk is not air-conditioned. Rooms are cooled with window fans and ceiling fans. There is also an attic fan to bring the cool night air inside. Often blankets are needed for the cool summer night time mountain air.

**While we do furnish pillows, quilts and blankets, no sheets or towels are supplied. PLEASE BRING SHEETS AND TOWELS. If you are interested in renting linens, please let us know and we can make arrangements for you.

About Margaret Bauer

A 4th generation Montreater, I wanted to give our children the opportunity to experience summers and off-season weekends in this beautiful place. We live less than 3 hours away and come up often to stay in our nearby family home. In order to have more flexibility, my husband and I purchased our own cottage in 2013, completely renovated it, and gave it a new life. After completing that renovation, I knew I would enjoy bringing Boardwalk (formerly First Place or The Burlington) back to life as well. It's been very rewarding watching a beautiful old cottage start new again and we wanted to share that with others who love the charm of a Montreat cottage as much as we do!

Margaret Bauer purchased this house in 2015

Why Margaret Bauer chose Montreat

Montreat is the perfect vacation spot for families and adult groups alike. So much to do here. Boardwalk is ideally located in the Valley of Montreat, close to all attractions, activities, and hiking trails.

Park your car and let it sit while you enjoy the convenience of walking to Lake Susan, the Conference Center, Currie Craft Center, The Huckleberry Cafe, Children's Day Camps (Clubs), the tennis courts, and all of the great hiking trails in the area. Want to just relax during your stay? Enjoy a book, sit and rock, take a nap, or play a board game on our 300sf covered front porch with the sounds of flat creek and mountain views. House is great! Especailly now with the new bunk room

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in this house many times with our youth group up for the summer conference. The house is homey without being fussy. The furniture is durable and can be arranged for small or larger groups. The fresh paint and newly decorated spaces (even the porches are set up for living room use) are modern and pleasing to the restful eye. It is only a short walk to any activity in Montreat. We will definitly be back!

Perfect Space for us, but chilly!

  • 4 of 5

10 of us shared this home for the Montreat College Conference in Jan this year. The space was perfect for us to share meals and have good conversation. The whole house was clean and there were plenty of beds for all of us to be comfortable. Also the location is perfect to walk to everything in Montreat. Our only struggle was the living room and kitchen stayed quite chilly. The bed rooms heated up well, but the living spaces were a bit drafty. Something to keep in mind--we had freezing winter temperatures the week we were there. One morning was minus 8 degrees! Even for the mountains that is unusual. Other than that this home was great. I hope we can rent it in the summer soon and use that great porch too!

Owner's Response: Hi Molly, Thanks for your review of our property. I'm sorry you were so chilly during your stay. And yes, it was VERY cold that week in Montreat! We were staying in our other property there and found it very difficult to stay warm. We do close the house down for the remainder of January and February for that very reason. We will certainly add a few more space heaters just in case we get another cold snap next holiday season. Glad the rest of your stay was good and we hope to have you and your group back again during warmer weather!

Just as described!

  • 5 of 5

This would be a wonderful retreat for a large group. If you are looking for luxury, this may not be the best choice, as it has more of a dormitory feeling than that of a home. The kitchen is fantastic and well stocked for those who like to cook! Be prepared for the steps, parking and air situation.

Owner's Response: Thanks Sarah for your review. We do, definitely, appeal to groups! We work constantly to upgrade the house for family comfort as well, adding a great bunk room for kids and teens, recent upgrades to the kitchen and adding an attic fan to bring the cool night air in. We always welcome any suggestions for making it more comfortable for all. We hope you will return and let us know what you think of the new additions!

Beautiful location, great house, plenty of room, get your cardio in by going up and down the stairs

  • 5 of 5

The house was the same as described and in the photos. We a large group (20) in town for a soccer tournament in Asheville. Everyone had a bed and there are plenty of showers. The kitchen had everything we needed for meals for 20. Everyone was able to congegate in the living room/dining room because there are plenty of chairs. The only drawback was the steep walk to the house. After playing soccer all day it was not something we looked forward to. But hey, we're in the mountains so it is not surprising. Margaret was very easy to deal with and responded to my messages in a timely manner. Check out instructions were easy to follow and accomplish. We would definitely stay again.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Melvin, for your review. I can only imagine what it was like to walk up stairs after playing soccer all day. And yes, the mountains can be tough to navigate sometimes! We have re-worked the stairs to make the walk a little less strenuous, but it is the mountains after all. A little exercise for the legs each trip up! Hope you will come again!!!

About Montreat...

Montreat, NC is a secluded mountain cove community nestled at the foot of Greybeard Mountain and surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. We are located in the far eastern portion of Buncombe County near the Eastern Continental Divide. We are blessed with a great variety of native flora and fauna, gently flowing streams and gorgeous mountain vistas.

Life here is lived at a slower, more peaceful pace. There is no commercial development in Montreat, not even a traffic light. Most of the streets are narrow and winding, with much less vehicle traffic than larger town or cities. This is an advantage to our preferred method of travel - walking. Multiple trails wind through hundreds of acres of wilderness surrounding the Town, along creeks, across rustic bridges and through preserved woodland areas.

Montreat, a name created from a portmanteau of 'Mountain' and 'Retreat,' was originally founded as as a spiritual retreat in the early 1900's. The Montreat Conference Center currently hosts year-round religious conferences for all ages. The Conference Center's facilities include a hotel, several guest lodges, a beautiful stone auditorium seating 2,000, a craft center, child care center, children's park and abundant hiking trails.

Montreat College is a four-year co-educational liberal arts college that is independent and Christ-centered. The integration of faith and learning with an emphasis on servant leadership are key elements in the College's educational process. The College brings many special events to Montreat, including symphonies, plays, community arts festivals, adult learning programs community trips abroad and sports programs. Most of the College's facilities are housed in historic stone buildings constructed in the early 1900's. The Chapel of the Prodigal features internationally renowned fresco artist Ben Long's rendition of 'The Return of the Prodigal' and is open to the public.
