Great Home and lot with wonderful views. Lots of room: all the the extras including hot tub plus views of the ocean. Very comfortable and home like. Lots of trails with many to the nearby ocean.

My wife and I stayed for parts of 4 days at Sea Myst. Had a wonderful time. Home was as advertised and very clean upon arrival. Weather in early September was gorgeous. Mild temps, no coastal fog, and light winds. Home had amenities to include a nice cable TV and Wi fi access. Only suggestion would be to have a larger dining table that could double as a board game table. Small table only in kitchen area. Especially enjoyed the Del Mar Rec center and its lovely large pool and clubhouse. Could not have been nicer. It was only 1 mile away. Enjoyed walks on the nearby beach and had several blacktail deer as frequent visitors near the home. . Would recommend the home for a couple only or a couple with one or two children over 8 yrs old. .

Great location but house needs attention
Great location but house needs attention
I sincerely hate writing bad reviews, but having visited Sea Ranch two dozen times over the last 30 years, we felt like the owners would benefit from some honest feedback. This is a dog-friendly house, so we always assume there will be a little more wear & tear and maybe an undesirable odor or two than dog-free houses. But being responsible dog owners who appreciate anyone willing to let us bring Fido, we consider ourselves pretty generous when it comes to rating dog-friendly rentals. Our experience at Sea Myst was not great. The first impression happened when we tried to get in the front door when the key didn't work. After panicking and trying to figure out how we were going to resolve this since we were renting for the first time directly from the owners, we tried the backdoor lock & fortunately were able to get in. Upon inspection once inside, it turns out the door handle on the front door is totally non-functional. You simply can't open that door. I think we would have been more forgiving if this had been in the instructions, but it wasn't. And it is a fire safety issue. The interior of the house is nothing special as many other people in their reviews mentioned. But "dated" is OK with us as long as things work and the space is clean and comfortable. Our issue with Sea Myst was first and foremost the smell. The whole back bedroom area/garage smelled horrible. It was beyond musty but also sour. Fortunately we hadn't booked it with our friends who we had considered bringing up with us. They would have had to get a hotel. I don't know if it is water damage or the fact that the garbage in the garage reeks through into that part of the house, but we closed it up and never entered it so as not to infuse the house with that smell. Fortunately, we were able to air it out by opening all of the patio doors, but we seriously considered abandoning the house in the first 30 minutes of our visit. Lastly, I would mention the kitchen. Besides having dirty pans in the oven, the kitchen was very difficult to cook in but pretty well equipped with pots, pans & spices. The BBQ worked fine but the grill was filthy & first had to be located (in a storage locker on the deck), then set up. Doable for sure, but not convenient. On the positive side, the furniture in the living room was comfortable & the bed in the main bedroom was wonderful. Best part was the location just steps from Walk On Beach. The view was great. WiFi worked well and we got the Giants game on TV :-)

Owner response: We appreciate all feedback good and otherwise. We have been renting our home out now for ten years and have not had to respond to a bad review. We are responsive and responsible owners. Not to say mistakes have never been made but we always respond and make up for any kind of short coming by offering dinners or free nights. To address the specific issues’ in this review, the front door did have a sticky lock and of course it is now fixed. Trash service is once per week on Wednesday and the trash needs to be accessible to be picked up. Unfortunately it cannot be left outside due to wildlife thinking it is their dinner. Our house cleaning/maintenance crew makes every attempt to take care of this but this time the trash was left in the garage for a few days to long. If you’re at Sea Myst and its Wednesday, just unlock the garage and the trash gets picked up. We have our cell phone numbers all through the house. All it takes is a call and these types of problems are easily solved. We love talking directly to guest and encourage calls. We were made aware of these problems in an e mail after these folks got home. At that point there was nothing we could do. Any future guests please, just call us if something is not quite right. We love hearing from you and will do everything possible to make your stay a great one.

Perfect relaxing family getaway
Perfect relaxing family getaway
My husband and I stayed at Sea Myst for a week with our two college-aged sons and our dog. We wanted a private, relaxed location with a beautiful view, where we could enjoy time just being together. Sea Myst was perfect! The Sea Ranch is a wonderfully quiet, mostly private area stretching 10 miles along the cooast. The town of Gualala (grocery store, gas stations, restaurants, etc.) is about 3 miles from the house. The weather was nice every day...warm and sunny with pleasant ocean breezes. We rode bicycles, took hikes along the bluff (Wow! Incredible views.), strolled on Walk-On-Beach (just a couple of miniutes to walk) with our dog, sat on the deck watching birds and listening to waves crashing on the rocky shoreline, enjoyed a Father's Day excursion to Point Arena Lighthouse, played cards, worked puzzles, cooked some great meals together (in the well-equipped kitchen), watched a little TV (TV's in both bedrooms and in the main living area), made lots of tasty fruit smoothies in the blender, and had a thoroughly wonderful and rejuvenating week. The beds were very comfy. The private hot tub was a great way to end each day, listening to the surf and gazing at the stars. The wireless internet worked well and my husband and I were able to touch base with our offices when necessary. My AT&T cell phone service didn't work there, but my husband and son have Verizon and that worked fine, plus the owners provide a house phone for guests to use. The house isn't fancy or formal, but it was clean, restful and very comfortable, and had everything we needed for a relaxing getaway from our usually busy lives. Thanks, John and Lucy, for allowing us to enjoy your lovely cottage.

Great private location, beautiful home
Great private location, beautiful home
We had a fabulous 3 night stay at Sea Myst. What a great view of the crashing ocean waves and abundant wildlife from the sunny afternoon deck. Within an hour after arriving, we saw several deer and a jackrabbit bounding across the meadow. Also sighted were hummingbirds, robins, Jays, a heron, and 3 pelicans among countless other seabirds riding the winds of Sea Ranch. The home has all the comforts needed to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings - if a hot tub, in room electric fireplaces, bikes, cable TV, a reading loft, close proximity to the Del Mar rec center aren't enough for you, then you can't be happy anywhere. This place has everything you need. The bed is super comfortable and there are plenty of books throughout the home should you find yourself wanting to curl up and read. We lucked out and had 3 warm days of sunshine - we did get a roaring fire going on the last night there as it does get chilly when the sun dips down. The Black Point Grill is a gem, as is Trinks in Gualala (which had been closed for the week prior - whew!). Two Fish Bakery was not open the whole time we were there - ahhh, this leaves something for next time. Can't wait to return to this beautiful private paradise! So close, yet so far away. Thank you John & Lucy for letting us share this beautiful spot!

We enjoyed our stay a lot. The house is very comfortable with many thoughtful details attended to, good value. The real star is the setting. Turn right out the front door and you at the beach in a couple of minutes. Turn right again and the trail on the bluff along the ocean goes on forever. Incredibly beautiful. The dog was in heaven and so were we.

Owner response: Thanks Come back any time!
A charming Sea Ranch home that I would re-visit in a heartbeat. The owners were very accommodating and even jumped in to take care of a couple unforeseen problems when we first arrived. Waking up with the spectacular ocean view and the sound of the waves was particularly memorable and I'd say this location on the ten mile stretch of coastline is one of the best. Trails to explore all along the bluffs and two beaches that were almost always ours alone to enjoy and it was an added bonus to have bicycles available to explore the coastline on private roadways away from Highway 1. This was my 8th time in a Sea Ranch rental and as stated before, I would return to this home happily. It may not be the newest or most opulent but it was very nicely appointed, comfortable and suited our every need to a tee.

About the owner: We found Sea Myst as we were driving home from the Mendocino Coast. As we lamented the thought of leaving the ocean we happened on the for sale sign pointing to a house at the world famous Sea Ranch. We stopped and the rest is our Sea Myst history . One that we hope to pass on to our grandchildren. The minute we walked into this house we knew we were home! The view, the feel and we didn't realize the best beach on Sea Ranch was 2 minutes away. The more we learned about the family who built the house the more we felt a connection to this house. Here it is five years later and we are more in love with Sea Myst and Sea Ranch than ever. You will fall in love too...
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Walking in the front door, the house is warm from the afternoon sun and the water is so blue you just melt. A short stroll to the beach and you are in a different world surrounded by driftwood, sand and the sound of the surf.
