Little Red Boat House (Cottage)
- Minimum stay:2 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Also know as the 'Little Red Cottage' it was originally built as a boathouse and features a deck across the front that overhangs the water's edge. Step off the deck onto the dock, and jump into the beautiful turquoise Little Traverse Lake.
You can enjoy an unusual amount of privacy due to the property being bordered by vacant wooded lots on both sides.
A sandy lake bottom and shallow water 200' out makes for great swimming. Little Traverse Lake is known for perch fishing. Even on holiday weekends the lake activity is pretty low key.
Walk around the end of the lake into the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and stroll along Good Harbor Bay on Lake Michigan. Hike the miles of trails, a short walk or a quick car ride away.
Bring your own bedding/linens and towels. One queen and a full size futon with a twin bunk bed.
The Cottage/Boathouse is near wineries, golf courses, a block from Michigan Traders store, art galleries, and much more. It's approximately 9 miles south to Glen Arbor and about the same, North to Leland.
Sleeping Bear Dunes has been voted Most Beautiful Place in America. Just 10 minutes to Glen Arbor and 10 minutes from Glen Arbor to the beautiful Sleeping Bear Lakeshore.
This Cottage/Boathouse is conveniently located in Leelanau County:
5 minutes to Maple City
10 minutes to Leland
10 minutes to Glen Arbor
20 minutes to Sleeping Bear Dune Climb
35 minutes to Traverse City

This was our third trip to the Little Red Boathouse. The recent renovations have made it even better! Full length glass doors in both bedrooms provide the most beautiful view of the lake. The location between Leland and Glen Arbor is great. You will not find better (or cuter!) accommodations for the price.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Ann, I'm so glad to have you and your family back for the third time and that you had a good time. You and your family were one of our first renters in 2008/2009. I hope you will continue to stop back and see what's new at the boathouse because the remodeling will be continuing for the next few years. It's so nice to have returning renters like you.

We had a fantastic time at the Little Red Boat House! The cottage is well-maintained, very comfortable and well-equipped, and has just enough space for a family of 4 to spend a week comfortably. The listing was accurate, the photos are right on, and the view of the lake is even better than described. Everything was very clean, and we felt at home immediately. Cheri was very responsive and proactive with information. We would definitely recommend the Little Red Boat House to anyone, and if we found ourselves back in the area, we'd definitely come back to the LRB! There is SO much to do in the area! Climb the big dune at Sleeping Bear Dunes, spend some time on Lake Michigan at the BEAUTIFUL Good Harbor Beach, just a few miles down the road. Hang out in Leland and browse shops in Fishtown (eat at the Bluebird, and grab some ice cream in town afterward). Shop and see the galleries in Glen Arbor. Have some English pub grub right down the road at the Little Traverse Inn (Chicken Tikka Sandwich!). Eat some freshly baked blueberry slab pie from Michigan Trader (you can walk there). Enjoy some deiscious sausages and meats from Pleva's in Cedar. Golf at the Sugar Loaf Old Course. Go have a taco for us at the Cedar Sol Hydro Farm (we saw it on the way out of town, and had already eaten, but it's on the list for next time!) We ran out of time, but had a fantastic week in the area, and the Little Red Boat House was the perfect "home base."Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

A friend and I stayed just for a weekend and had a great time. The Little Red Boathouse is located right in the middle of everything that we wanted to do. We spent a day in Leland, a day in Traverse City, and a day at Sleeping Bear Dunes. Everything was within a 25 mile radious and was easily accessible. Thank you for giving us the opportunity of staying at this cute little spot of beauty.Recommended for: Romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for staying at the Little Red Boathouse and I'm so happy you and your friend enjoyed Leelanau. I hope you will be able to come back in the future for a longer visit, because there is so much exploring to do in Leelanau County. Fondly, Cheri

We loved staying at the Little Red Boat House. We sat outside looking out at the lake, enjoying the cool breeze. The full kitchen was nice but, we grilled our dinners outside on the grill that was provided. We enjoyed the firepit every evening as well. The location was perfect we were close enough to Traverse City that we could go in for the film festival. We went to the public beach in Glen Haven for rock hunting. Ate at the famous Art's in Glen Arbor. And wine tasting at the many wineries...and unlike California most did not charge for the tastings. We couldn't have asked for a better location. We will stay the "Little Red Boat House" in the future.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

The Little Red Boathouse was a wonderful place to spend one of the hottest weeks of the summer. Although the back and front yards are not very large for small children, there is ample play space along the sides of the cottage and on the deck. The kitchen had everything we needed to make every meal we brought from home. The lake was fairly sandy, but with some weeds, so we opted to take the 2-3 mile drive to Lake Michigan for most of our swimming. Upon arrival, the cottage was extremely clean and welcoming. You are within walking distance to a very quaint grocery store and produce stand, so that was very fun to visit daily. We explored all the towns surrounding the area and easily came back for nap times and were close enough to explore again in the afternoon. We will very likely return to make many more family memories in Leelanau County.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children.

We can't say enough about how much we enjoy our yearly vacation at the Little Red Boat House. This is at least the fifth year we've spent a week in July enjoying the beautiful property and surroundings. I am so glad that I found this listing on-line and we couldn't be happier. The boat house is comfortable, enchanting, very well equiped and extremely private. The lake is beautiful and this year we sat with our early morning coffee on the deck and watched a Loon feed and groom. The sunsets are absolutely gorgeous! We would highly recommend this property to anyone. Jim and TeresaRecommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

We packed a lot of bonding, laughter, stories and general good cheer in under 700 square foot of cottage. This was a perfect long weekend before the start of a busy fall for our family. Best wishesDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We really enjoyed our stay at your cottage . It was exactly like the pictures on the website! No surprises, very relaxing. Bob, my husband caught a few small bass- he was happy. The futon mattress was very comfortable. My mom and dad totally like their weekend and said they could come back again! The cottage is very well equipped. We spent days wondering the small towns- nights on the back deck or by the fire pit, playing games at the table and having fun. Thanks for sharing your Little Red Boathouse with us.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My husband and I had an absolutely wonderful time coming up north to your cottage. It was so nice to have a bottle of wine under the stars on the deck! So peaceful and quiet! Very bittersweet for us to leave. Need to go home to Ft Wayne, IN and see our 4 kids. We miss, will not forget the beautiful sunsets! ThanksDid you find this review helpful? Owner info
Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: Randy and Cheri have owned property in Leelanau County for 18 years. We have enjoyed the landscape, community and social aspects of this area. Randy is an artist and Cheri's passion is culinary, so this area has a lot to offer in that regard. The wineries are very unique with great choices of wines. This area reminds us of a mini California. We are very active people so Leelanau Peninsula suits us very well. From bicycling the large hills to downhill and cross country skiing. Hiking is beautiful in the National parks that surrounds the pristine Lake Michigan. And of course playing in Little Traverse Lake, so refreshing and is one of the cleanest inland lakes in Michigan. So come and explore and experience something special, we are sure you will not be disappointed.
Why the Owner Chose Little Traverse Lake:
We pinch ourselves every time we are back at Little Traverse Lake. We never tire of sitting on the deck of the Boathouse for a meal or gazing. And at night the stars are unbelievable. Satellites are easy to spot as they pass by due to no light pollution,
Whether we stay put at the Boathouse or head out to explore, it's so easy to relax when you are here. After a decade and a half, we are still discovering this paradise.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Leelanau peninsula, the pinky of the 'mitten' state, is truly like no other place in the midwest. The reasons are many: vast beaches, dunes, panoramic views, wineries, breweries, quaint towns, art galleries, farm markets, Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, Manitou Islands, turquoise lakes, etc., etc.
