HOW FAR IS THE CABIN FROM THE LAKE.?
YOU CAN WALK DOWN OR DRIVE DOWN.
Warning! As of August 14, a bear has been seen in the neighborhood.
Reminder. Madera county has declared our water unsafe for drinking. You will need to supply your own drinking water and paper products.
A special notice has been issued by Cal Fire banning All outdoor fires, INCLUDING SMOKING. Smoking is allowed in cars, and on debris and vegetation free surfaces, such as blacktop.
To check out the walk down to the lake, zoom in on the satellite view of the location map. Just past Shoreline Dr., there is a shortcut through the cabins at the end of a long driveway. If you zoom in enough, you will be able to see the crosswalk across Rd. 274 that leads to a stairway down to the Marina. Our boat dock is to the right of the launch ramp and swim float.
Bass Lake has been called one of the best lakes in the West by Sunset magazine. It is located in the Sierra National Forest at the 3500' elevation which means the water warms nicely in summer, and there are occasional winter snow storms.
In fact, it snowed 8' the last Monday of October 2013. The main roads are plowed promptly, and traveling is rarely a problem for more than a few hours. The snow typically melts within a day or two unless temperatures are unusually cold.
The fall color at this elevation peaks in mid-November to about Thanksgiving with the beautiful golden tones of willows and oaks. Our garden is landscaped with beautiful red and orange maple trees which really put on quite a show in the fall. We'll be adding two pink dogwood trees this winter for that touch of rose to burgundy to round out the palette.
Although we are not 'on' the lake, our view of the lake is actually better than many lakefront properties. With the cooperation of a few neighbors, a number of view blocking trees and branches have been selectively groomed to reveal an amazing lake view from the main floor living and dining areas and spacious deck. Unlike the majority of cabins which were built parallel to the street, my parents had the good judgment to orient our place to take face the lake to take full advantage of the views.
Our boat slip is in a private and gated Marina and has it's own launch ramp which is quite a luxury. It has been extended to be operational even when the level of the lake is low. There are BBQs and picnic tables, running water, and port-a-potties available in the marina. However, you will need to haul your own trash out. Our slip is on the only dock in the marina to have a shade cover which is a real asset on hot summer days.
Bass Lake is an excellent base for day trips to YOSEMITE, Kings Canyon, Sequoia, & the National Scenic Byway. Also, 2 SNOW SKI areas are within 1 1/2 hours driving. China Peak is more challenging, 7 chairs, 3 triples. We have CP season passes & enjoy the family friendly setting & exceptionally well-groomed terrain. China Peak also has an excellent snow board park. I learned to ski at Badger Pass in Yosemite while working weekends up there during college. It is a wonderful place for beginners and families with smaller children.
The docks are especially nice because of the calm deep water in this large speed restricted cove. People staying in other areas like to come down to this cove to drift around on hot summer afternoons.
Year Purchased: 1971
About: My father, brother, and uncle built this cherished family heirloom with much help from skilled friends, ie plumbing contractor, electrician, sheet metal specialist, and hired a Framer/carpenter. Mom and I prepared meals and made beverage and snack runs up to the crews from the neighbor's garage we were staying in. Our cabin has been the site for some very memorable family reunions. Dad was 1 of 12 children, and when we all got together, these were very big reunions. My parent's started out camping at Bass Lake in 1950 and spent every summer vacation up here after that. Over the years we advanced from borrowed row boats and borrowed motors, and Army tents to borrowed motor boats. Ultimately we acquired a 17' Aljo trailer and our own 'Dorset 35 hp outboard motor boat. By the mid 60's we owned a Brendella inboard speed boat with no neutral or reverse. At the end of every vacation we'd take a slow cruise through Willow Cove and up the shore line to The Falls admiring all those wonderful cabins, always hoping that someday, by some miracle, we'd have a cabin of own. This cabin is our dream come true.
Why Bass Lake:
PRIVATE DEEP WATER BOAT SLIP There is a private marina, launch ramp, and swimming float THE VIEW Honestly, many neighbors are surprised how good it is, and guests continually tell me how much better it is in person than they had imagined. THE AMBIENCE Even though it's updated, it retains cabinish charm. Very Comfortable furnishings inside and out. WELL MAINTAINED older cabin that has belonged to one family since 1971. It is much cleaner and 'COZIER' than the typical mountain rental. It has the very BEST VIEWS of Bass Lake for the price equivalent compared to others in the area. The entry, main floor Q BR, bathroom. living and dining area, and lake view deck are not ADA compliant, but there's a concrete entry ramp to the street level patio, , doorways have been widened, main toilet is higher, and shower with no threshold have been installed to make things as HANDICAP ACESSIBLE as space allowed. A motor cycle accident survivor who is wheelchair bound spent a week and was able to navigate quite well. He even made it to the lowest level with a strong assistant helping him ease down the neighbor's steep driveway. The spacious KITCHEN is extremely WELL SUPPLIED. Built with love & maintained with love, this cabin evokes a gracious and relaxing family 'cabinish' vibe.
