Beautiful 5 Bedroom/3 Bath home in Vanderhorst Plantation on the golf course with lagoon views. Oversize heated pool in a very private backyard, with a natural 'screen' of palms, live oaks and Spanish moss. Large screened porch (no bugs) is ideal outdoor living area, overlooking pool.Bike in only 5 minutes to one of the most secluded beaches on the island! The bike ride is beautiful, with the trail leading through a tropical forest, along a golf course and past several ponds. The Vanderhorst Plantation area is zoned single family only; passes to the second gate area are only issued to renters/residents; therefore the beaches are significantly less crowded!
The house has a traditional floor plan, offering a wonderful flow for entertaining several families, yet providing privacy. It is ideal for a family reunion or vacationing with friends. There are two master bedrooms (one with a king bed, the other with a queen bed), both with private baths on the first floor. The larger master is very elegant: it is approximately 20 x 18 feet with a vaulted ceiling, fireplace and hot tub and shower in the adjoining bathroom. There is a picturesque view from the hot tub of the pool, golf course and tropical forest. A study with day bed is off the master.
The living room, dining room and kitchen are three separate, spacious rooms on the first floor. Several dining areas are available for entertaining: the dining room table seats 12, the kitchen table and the table on the screened porch each seat 6; and the breakfast bar seats 3. There is a large, furnished screened in porch overlooking the pool and golf course. The porch also has a sitting area and hammock. The second floor has three bedrooms (one with a queen bed, two with twin beds), a bath, and a sitting area, complete with puzzles and games.
Please note: No pets, no smoking, 10 person max. (including children). Sorry, no exceptions! Also, the rates quoted are firm, and we are not able to respond to requests for discounts. If you compare our home to others in the Vanderhorst Plantation area, I think you will agree that we offer one of the best values!
Please note: Rental of this home does not offer use of various pools on Kiawah.
Q: We are coming to Kiawah tomorrow for a weeks vacation and I see your home is still available. What is the best, last minute rate you can give us? A: Our 'best' rates are already quoted on this web site.
Q: We have two small dogs; may we bring them? A: Sorry, we have a no pet policy.
Q: Where is your home located? A: 114 Bufflehead Dr., Kiawah Island, SC, 29455. It is in the Vanderhorst Plantation area of the island, on the Osprey Golf course. Please see detailed map, below.
Q: How far is the beach from your home? A: It is an easy five minute bike ride, or ten minute walk.
Q: In the unlikely event something doesn't work at the home, a leakey faucet, for example, what kind of service do you provide? A: The best! We have one of the areas best property managers, whose office is within a mile of Kiawah. You will have their contact information, and they will promptly have anything repared.
Q: We would like to rent your home over Easter; may we heat the pool?
A: Unfortunately, we are only able to heat the pool from May 21 to September 25. The heater is not able to warm up the pool enough in early spring, late fall or winter.

Q: What is there to do on Kiawah? A: Five world class golf courses, two top tennis centers, ten miles of pristine beaches, bike trails and rental, a complete spa at the Sanctuary, kids day camp, play ground, volley ball and basketball courts, Nature Center offering excursions, including kayak rental, bird walks, family programs and festivals every night of the summer, and teen night activities. We love vacationing at Kiawah! There are so many fun things for our whole family to do! Tennis, golf, swimming, nature hikes, biking and just relaxing by our pool.
Gary Catherman purchased this house in 2004
We love the Vanderhorst Plantation area of Kiawah. There are only single family homes, so it is much less crowded than other locations. Our home has such a wonderful layout for entertaining, especially when we have family reunions! Being on the golf course by a pond gives us a nice view out the back; great for bird, deer and alligator watching. In May, we have even observed the alligators in their mating ritual, including hearing an alligator "bellow" and walk the golf course behind our house from one pond to another! But no worries for guests with small children: our back yard is fenced in around the pool. Deer do hop over on occasion, but the fence will keep alligators out! Our plantings of trees and shrubs around the pool have grown in over the years, and now there is a natural privacy screen around the pool, with several "windows" to view out to the pond and golf course.
Our home is centraly located to the best the island has to offer, including the best beach, restaurants, golf courses, tennis facilities, wildlife areas, The Sanctuary and The Nature Center. Many of these destinations are an easy bike ride away!
10 miles of wide beaches, four pro level golf courses, two pro level tennis centers.
Night Heron Park: During the summer & major holidays, offers: Kamp Kiawah during the day and some evenings, book early! (Tip: We found the counselors made good babysitters when our kids were younger!) Family Night Programs that may include live music, ice cream socials, magicians, soccer demos, bingo, inflatables, train rides. Full Basketball Court, Soccer Field, Volley Ball, Geo Caching, Nature Center, guided bird and alligator hikes; boating excursions.
Freshfield Village: Grocery store, upscale shops, restaurants. Old time drug store compete with a soda fountain! Summers & major holidays: weekly farmer’s market, festivals, evening movies on the green.
Bohicket Marina: Boat charters, slip rental, restaurants.
Charleston: Only a forty minute drive and worth it. Aquarium, Historic District, home tours, Fort Sumter, IMAX, The Battery, tour of Tall Ships in certain years; Spoleto Arts Festival in late May/early June. Top restaurants, many with a contemporary/ southern menu and fresh ingredients, at reasonable prices. Some of our favorites: Husk (reserve several months ahead!), SNOB, Carolina’s, Blossoms, Magnolia’s, the latter which has a wonderful shrimp & grits.
