I live here in wonderful Carlsbad Village with my wife and children, we love being able to walk to dinner, listen to live music, ride our bikes around and enjoy the beach. I couldn't imagine a better place to experience life as a family.
Russell Bennett purchased this cottage in 2014
I purchased this property from a friend who had plans to develop it into condos, but loved the uniqueness of this amazing cottage compound and decided to bring the charm back. After fixing one after another up and many people stopping by to say how much they loved the property, I decided that sharing it was what I wanted to do and made them available as Vacation Rental.... Villagio Carlsbad Cottages. 7 individual cottages with private patios. Stay in one or multiple family can stay next to each other to be together and yet have their own space.
We had a wonderful stay in Carlsbad and glad we chose the Moonlight bay cottage. The cottage was centrally located to Carlsbad Village and a short distance walk to the beach. The cottage was also very clean and was well stocked with all the required essentials. I also like the fact that there was a community washer and dryer free of charge for the guests. We plan to come back next year!
Our stay at Moonlight Cottage gave us just the amount of space our family of 4 needed. (2 adults, a 3 year old and 7 year old). It was private and secure and close to every place we had on our list to go during our vacation. (Legoland, San Diego Zoo, Mission Beach and Old Town). We were very happy with how close the cottages were within walking distance to the main street (Carlsbad Village Drive) and the ocean. It was great to be able to go lots of places on foot rather than drive all the time.
The cottage we stayed in was very clean and well stocked with what we needed for our week stay. Our bed was comfortable and the girls had a blast sleeping on the bunk beds in the second bedroom. Gold star for having complimentary on sight laundry with detergent included! There was also a stack of board games for us to use when we had some downtime. Having a wagon to use to lug the provided beach toys down to the beach was a winner. We used that wagon every day!
There are a just a few other things worth mentioning:
1.) There needs to be more hooks. It was frustrating to have to find places to dry bathroom towels, beach towels and wet swim suits.
2.) We would have had an easier time getting sand off of the kids if the shower head was removable. We had to get creative before we even got in the
door. Just be prepared to sweep a lot.
3.) The commuter train, The Coaster, runs north and south just a block west of the cottages. It runs quite frequently and while we pretty
much got used to it by the time we left, we still got woken up by the blasting horns a few times. One other review mentioned using the fans as white
noise at night. I would agree but with the summer weather being as it was, in a house without central air, the windows were open at all times. So,
the train noise was still there.
All in all we had a wonderful stay and made long lasting memories at the Villagio Carlsbad. We made a smart choice of staying here rather than at a hotel. The owners really know how to cater to families. Thank you!
The Village Cottages look nice in the photos, but are even better in person. The cottages are all within a lush garden that is secured with a gate in which you need a code, creating a safe little paradise. Moonlight Cottage was very cute and clean, with a full-size bunk bed - perfect for my 5-going-on-6 son's birthday Legoland weekend. To top it off, the location is only two blocks from the beach and basically in the center of the village - everything was in walking distance - the beach, tons of restaurants and bars, Starbucks. Legoland was a 10 minute drive.
We were provided with all the information we needed for arrival making our first day seamless. I texted a couple of questions upon arrival and response was immediate. Great customer service.
Our family stayed here over spring break and it was absolutely amazing. The cottages are small but had everything we needed and then some. The bunk beds are queen size beds! This made putting our 6 and 3 yr olds to sleep super easy, plenty of room for good night snuggles and also provided each a bit of privacy. The interior was well appointed and I was defiantly not expecting the extra large, high resolution TV that I'm pretty sure ruined watching TV at home (maybe that's a double win?). The sand toys and wagon were a huge hit too. We really liked the location, lots of great places to eat as a family and the beach is really close too.
The only things I think could be better:
1) No outside shower. As a beach loving family, we often arrived back at the cottage with lots of sand and it would be nice to have a place to rinse off with relatively warm water before going inside.
2) The internet was slow and in the evenings it was hard to watch Netflix. It was kind of clunky to get the TV to change channels so Netflix felt like the only real option so this was kind of a bummer but ultimately not that big of a deal. Clearly the facility knows about the limitations because there is a note about it with the other cottage information.
My family and stayed at Moonlight Cottage for a weekend in March. Our son (19 months) and daughter (4 years) loved it and can't wait to do it again! Here are a few tips from our trip:
1. Kids loved the bunk beds.
2. Kids also loved having a TV in their own room.
3. My husband and I loved the separate room for the kids as well.
4. We cooked pizza and ribs while the kids took a nap. Convenient for us.
5. We went for smoothies at Beach City smoothies across the street. Good smoothies and family-friendly.
6. The weather was warm enough to go to the beach for the afternoon.
7. The enclosed patio gave the kids some space to ride their scooters.
Awesome place to stay!
Overall we had a lovely time at the Moonlight cottage. The place was clean and had all the amenities a small family would need. Myself, my husband, and our 3-year-old son stayed for 2 nights. The cottage is in a great location - very close to the beach and a ton of great restaurants and things to see. We had a lot of fun walking around and found the parking situation very easy. A few things made us give it 4 stars - as others have mentioned, it is VERY close to the train tracks. We stayed on a Friday and Saturday night and the noise of the trains was disturbing. Thankfully we had a white noise for our son's room, otherwise he would have been woken up every time a train went by. The cottage is also quite small. I don't know how groups of 6 people have stayed there. We felt a bit cramped with just us 3 but we were only there for 2 nights so it wasn't a big deal. There really isn't a good place to eat meals either, as some other reviewers have mentioned, particularly for young kids. We ended up using the couch and coffee table, which worked okay, but wasn't great. When we got there on Friday, the internet also wasn't working. The owners were very responsive but weren't able to fix it Friday and fixed it on Saturday instead. They did their best, but we would have liked to be able to be on the internet and watch TV on Friday. A minor issue was that the bathtub doesn't fully plug - water kept seeping out and it seemed that the water also couldn't get very hot. We didn't even mention this to the owners, but if we were staying longer we would have, and I'm sure they would have fixed it. They did allow us to use the cart and towels to go to the beach even after we checked out, which was super helpful and much appreciated. Generally, we had a great time and would stay here again.
