Location: Holualoa, Kona Coast, Big Island, Hawaii, USA (15 minute drive to Kailua-Kona or Keahole Airport in Kona)

Accommodations:  House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath (Sleeps 2)

Our home/farm is situated along the Kona Heritage Corridor just 3 miles north of desirable Holualoa town. Holualoa is a quaint village populated by many talented artists. It boasts one fantastic restaurant and cafe, a post office, a library, a convenience store, a boutique, and lots of galleries.

Our guest apartment is located on the garden level of our home. It is similar to a mother-in-law apartment. In Hawaii they call it an "ohana", which means family.

Listen to the tropical birds from your own 300-square-foot lanai (patio) surrounded by tropical plants. Inside over 600 square feet of living space welcomes you with everything you will need to make yourself at home.

The gentle mountain breezes keep our temperature between 70-80 year round degrees during the day. The winter months bring the coolest nights where temperatures can drop into the low 60's. This makes for very comfortable sleeping but also necessitates long sleeves in the evening and early mornings.

Be sure to enjoy the outdoor gazebo and hot tub surrounded by tropical plants. While there, check to see what needs picking in the vegetable garden. You can count on several varieties of lettuce year round. The green beans, eggplant, beets, and snap peas are generally in abundance as well. Fresh herbs are located in the circular garden inside the driveway. Depending on the time of year, you may find ripe avocados, papayas, lemons, limes, cherries, bananas, figs, oranges, tangerines, lychee, and lilikoi (passion fruit) on the property. We recently cleared 2 acres to plant coffee in the Spring of 2008.

Our home/farm is located in a private subdivision of five-acre properties. It is a safe, quiet, and beautiful neighborhood. The road is private and provides a great place for taking walks. Just across the coffee field one of our neighbors opened Mauka Mist, a healing therapies center in October of 2007 which you are welcome to patronize. You can schedule massages as well as attend yoga or tai chi classes. A motion pool and sauna are provided as well.

We completed a remodel in December 2004. All the flooring, appliances, paint, and linens were replaced. The furniture was updated in September of 2007. Come and see for yourself. We look forward to meeting you and sharing our piece of paradise with you!

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2000

Steve and Linda have their roots in the rural areas of Indiana and North Carolina respectively. After having visited and lived in various places around the world, they settled in Holualoa nearly a decade ago. Steve is a former Marine and has two degrees from Indiana University. Steve worked in several different aspects of the financial services industry and now has primary responsibility for fruit growing on the farm. Linda had a very successful sales career, beginning with a small Chemical company, then moving to a major multinational corporation, and finally retiring in 2000 as a sales representative for the Coleman Company, covering most of the western US. Now, Linda is responsible for growing and selling the vegetables from her garden, grown on the slopes of Hualalai Mountain. Steve and Linda are extremely happy with having placed their roots in this land and are pleased to share that joy with others.

Why the Owner Chose Holualoa

Holualoa is a very special part of the Big Island. The area we live in, Keopu Mauka, is Hawaiian for "belly of the mountain". Many years ago the food for the royal family was grown in this ahu pua'a due to it's fertile soil. Since we wanted to have a large garden and grow lots of the local fruits we decided this area would be perfect for us. It is at a higher elevation which makes for more comfortable temperatures as well. The nearby town of Holualoa is so very quaint. The many artist galleries and our one wonderful restaurant make it a special place to visit. It is also a very safe place to live and visit.

The Unique Benefits of this House

If you enjoy waking to the sound of birds in the morning, and gazing at a sky full of stars at night, you will enjoy where we live. The added benefit of plucking fresh fruits from the trees and fresh vegetables from the garden makes it filling in a realistic way. With the many different micro climates on the Big Island you can drive a short distance and experience many different environs all the while knowing comfort and tranquility await you back at Chez Marquis Farm.

    • We sadly had to leave Chez Marquis on May 11, after two wonderful weeks. Steve and Linda are the perfect hosts, always available and accommodating, but never infringing on their guests' privacy. Even wonderful Pua is polite and, like the others before us, we fell in love with her. The farm is beautiful and the location is perfect if you want to get away from the tourist scene. The nights are cool and mornings full of birdsong. We spent every morning drinking coffee and eating breakfast on the lanai. The pictures on the site represent the ohana perfectly. We highly recommend Chez Marquis!

    • We had a wonderful stay at Chez Marquis for 16 days in Dec 2008. Steve and Linda were excellent hosts and we enjoyed getting to know them. You can't avoid falling in love with thier big but gentle dog Pua, who was there to greeted us when we drove up and when we woke up. Although she has treats on the brain, she'll tolerate your love and affection. Steve is more than willing to share what he has learned about growing tropical fruits and flowers, so we really enjoyed the farm tour. The apartment was comfortable, tastefully decorated and well equipped. We had the best sleeps ever in the cool mountain air and woke up to the the beautiful sounds of birds singing. We enjoyed poking around the nearby quaint little town of Holualoa and lots of Kona coffee tasting! Lenora and Phil Kenora, ON Canada

    • We spent 4 very enjoyable nights at Chez Marquis. Linda and Steve (and Pua!) made us feel very welcome, and their advice on what to do and where to go was a real bonus. The surrounding tropical gardens they have created are a spectacular setting, and we found the place very peaceful and relaxing. We also enjoyed fresh passion fruit which were delicious, and the best mango we've ever tasted! We'd recommend this place wholeheartedly for anyone wishing to stay somewhere a little different in the Kona area.

    • Steve and Linda were delightful hosts. Their adorable dog, Pua, visited us in the evening for a treat. Their 5 acre farm is beautiful - Steve took us on an informative tour. We enjoyed eating some of their fruits and vegetables. Since you are staying at a very high elevation(2200 feet), it does get cool in the evening. It felt good to me after 85degrees in Kona. We enjoyed our 9 days in May.

    • We stayed in this apartment the last week of 2007. The place was great in every way. It was roomy with a nice kitchen, a beautiful lanai, convenient location, lovely grounds and wonderful hosts. We made fresh guacamole with avocados and limes from the property (3 times), the best ever! Nestled in Kona coffee country,a short walk took us past acres of coffee trees bursting with huge red beans. The mountain and ocean views are stunning. Linda and Steve were very helpful in helping us enjoy this part of the Big Island. Pua was at our doorstep every morning when we awoke welcoming us to another day in, yes, paradise.

    • Our stay at Chez Marquis was a lovely experience, from the personal greeting the morning of our arrival right up to the "see you next time" as we waved good-bye. Linda and Steve are very gracious hosts. We enjoyed our "home away from away" where we were welcome to roam the gardens and enjoy the bounty. Often times our fresh lettuce and avocados would be delivered right to us!! Their tangerines are plentiful and more delicious when you pick your own right from their trees. Flowers, ocean views, good pots and pans, nice towels, and even beach chairs and coolers to borrow!! I couldn't have asked for much more. I'm not a huge dog lover, but I loved their dog Pua. Can't wait to go back for another visit.
