Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

2 Bedrooms 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 5

My light-filled, two bedroom, one-bath home sits two blocks from the surfers' paradise, Windansea, and other La Jolla beaches. Surrounded by aromatic plants, trees and cacti, this bright coral cottage has two outdoor patios, one for dining, another for barbecuing and sunning yourselves in privacy. Built in 1948, the cozy house boasts hardwood floors, crown molding, a lovely fireplace, a separate dining room, large windows and other craftsman touches. The neighborhood is foodie heaven, as eateries—from authentic taco shops to excellent Greek and Italian restaurants, a beloved sports bar to upscale eateries—dot the neighborhood along La Jolla Boulevard. The breathtaking and famed La Jolla Cove with its colonies of harbor seals, brown pelicans and other wildlife is just a short walk away, taking you through the 'downtown' shops of La Jolla Village. And if ocean swimming is not your thing, La Jolla's outdoor community pool and multiple tennis courts are two blocks to the east on the campus of La Jolla High.

The scale of the rooms, the quality of the light, and location, location, location make this sweet, traditional cottage a happy home away from home.

•No smoking is allowed inside my sweet home

•Due to the moderate coastal climate, this house (like most in the area) does not have air conditioning; it does have excellent, if infrequently needed, heating.

•My home is located in a quiet neighborhood and is only suitable for families or quieter groups. My rental contract includes a strong policy regarding loud noise, excessive occupancy and big parties. Please make sure you are comfortable with these policies before renting Windansea Craftsman Cottage. I treasure my relationships with my neighbors and want renters who honor them, too.

About Owner/Property Manager

That's me and my three wonderful sons enjoying a winter sunset at Windansea Beach, just down the street from my sweet home. The draw of the sunsets here is irresistible, and many nights you'll see scores of people sipping wine and watching the sun slowly drop beneath the horizon, as if we were all enjoying one of Nature's best movies.

I was a dance and theater critic on the East coast and then in San Diego for many years. Now I write, edit and teach Yoga here in La Jolla. I'm eager to share this beautiful spot with you.

Why Owner/Property Manager chose La Jolla

Perfect location! Walking distance everywhere in La Jolla. Close but not noisy close to a great beach and surf spot. Neighborhood eateries line nearby La Jolla Blvd. Free tennis courts and a huge community pool a block away. And the house itself is so charming.

Guestbook comments from the owner

If you hope to find a cozy and beautiful perch where you'll feel comfortable and calm (and thankful!), I can happily promise that you will wake up inspired and bright-eyed each morning, sleep deeply each night, and enjoy every blissful moment in between at 520 Westbourne Street. Having spent many holidays, special occasions, and other detours from Seattle in Windansea Craftsman Cottage, I have every reason to believe that you, too, will enjoy being there—and that you'll make it a point to return.

Anne Marie Welsh is a straight shooter, accommodating to a fault, and one of the kindest, most generous, and inspiring humans I have ever met. Beyond that, I can also assure you that her home is a clean, calm, sunny, and otherwise cheery oasis that affords easy access to all that is best about La Jolla. In just a few minutes, you can walk from the happy cottage to a breathtaking beach or the hubbub of the "village," with its spectacular restaurants and shops A few miles south, downtown San Diego is easily accessible, and the impressive campus of the University of California, San Diego, is likewise nearby—and gorgeous. Del Mar, Encinitas, Solana Beach, and other North County diversions are also worth a quick detour north. Windansea Craftsman Cottage is a perfect ground zero!

Great spot

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed here several times and have discovered, again and again, that it's a perfect place to stay. It's a great location with a beautiful yard and a well-equipped kitchen. The owner is very helpful and easy to contact. It's a perfect place for a vacation in LaJolla.

Great location, very cute

  • 4 of 5

This was our first time renting a place through VRBO, and I must say that we had a really good time! The beach is just a short five minute walk down the street, and many wonderful restaurants are only a 10-15 minute walk. One of the best reviewed local foodie places - The Promiscuous Fork - is literally across the street.

Our party had four adults and two children, which is a lot of people for a small house like this, and the owner was very accommodating. She left an air mattress for the kids in one of the bedrooms, and we took turns using the one bathroom. A smaller party of 2-4 adults (no kids) or 2 adults w/ 1-2 kids would certainly find this to be more than adequate.

We felt very comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked with spices, dishes, pots and pans, and there was even some food in the fridge for us when we arrived. How wonderful! For those who like to watch TV, there is an Apple TV, cable box, and various other ways to obtain programming. Wi-fi is offered in the house, free of charge. A box of maps and books for what to do in town greeted us on the dining table. The owner leaves a multi-page document on the table discussing some good places to eat, local amenities, etc. That was very helpful for us!

There is a lovely courtyard out front. There is a nice garden table with four chairs at one end, and a couple of garden chaises at the other. There was a banana tree in the middle of the courtyard sporting green bananas - that was a treat for us to see, since we are from Arizona and don't see that here.

A couple of things to be aware of... Parking is on the street, but we did not have any trouble finding a place. No matter when we came or left, there were always spaces available. There is a 7-Eleven across the street, on the corner, which attracts hungry police officers. You can often find a police cruiser parked across the street while officers eat lunch or dinner. I drive a Tesla, so I'm very particular about where I park. No issues.

Speaking of the 7-Eleven on the corner, I should mention that it can get a little noisy there on the weekends at night. We needed to keep all of the windows open in order to maintain a comfortable temperature, so naturally the sound was louder than it would have been if our windows were closed. If you are accustomed to the sounds of a city at night, this shouldn't be an issue.

I would definitely rent this again! :)

Amazing place with an amazing host

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for 4 months and it was more then my family and I (2 adults and one teenager) expected. Everything worked fine and was the way described and shown on the website. The owner was very courteous and helpful and supported us in many ways to feel at home. We especially enjoyed the evening strolls to Windansea and couldn't get enough of those great sunsets. The place is also just a short walk or bike ride to La Jolla center so you don't really need a car. You can even take the bus downtown to the trolley (Old Town) however you do need a bit of patience for that. Mission Bay and PB are just a 5-10 minute drive if you are into water sports such as surfing, kayaking or sailing. All in all a great place to stay and definitely recommendable.

Cozy yet spacious with lots of light and privacy

  • 5 of 5

Ann Marie Welsh’s rental, Windansea Craftsman Cottage, is a lovely two- bedroom, one-bath residence with lots of light and privacy. The home is cozy yet spacious with it's openness and outdoor views. The outdoor patio is perfect for al fresco dining.

Anns Marie is a wonderful host and very responsive to one's needs and wants.

I've stayed there on numerous occasions and love its close proximity to shops and restaurants and especially the famous Windansea Beach; all within walking distance.
