A bit about the Augusta area:

Originally an English trading post on the Kennebec River, Augusta has since grown to be the capital of Maine, and is focused on preserving and celebrating the state’s history. Visit the magnificent Maine State House or Old Fort Western, the oldest surviving wooden fort in the United States. The city is also the home of the Pine Tree State Arboretum, a 224-acre park and botanic garden, with six miles of hiking, biking and cross-country skiing trails, open for free, all year round.

There are also some really wonderful towns on the outskirts of Augusta that really add to the region.

Hallowell is located in Kennebec County just south of Augusta, the state’s capital. Founded in 1771, the city was originally the home of many chemists, physicians, politicians, inventors and artists. Still today, many creative and political figures call Hallowell home because of the city's location, intimate downtown area, historical architectures and old-fashioned New England charm.

The downtown Hallowell area, bordered on the west by Middle and Warren Streets is a National Historic District full of buildings and homes that reflect numerous architectural periods from Federal to Victorian. Many locals also refer to the city as “Maine’s Antique Center' because of the many antique shops along the riverfront. In addition to antique shops, the downtown area on Water Street features art galleries, boutiques and family- owned pubs, fine restaurants and many other local businesses.

The city is also home to the Gaslight Theatre that has provided quality live entertainment to the capital area since 1937 and is the oldest continuously operating community theatre in the state.

With a total area of 6.1 miles, Maine's smallest city stretches eloquently along the shores of the Kennebec River and provides easy access to The Kennebec River Rail Trail, offering miles of scenic river views for walkers and bikers. The trail stretches almost seven miles from Augusta through Hallowell and Farmingdale, ending in Gardiner. The city also has a state-operated boat landing that is located on the south end of the city that quickly becomes the hub of activities during the warmer months as people launch their boats to cruise the Kennebec River as far as the Atlantic Ocean.

The city’s Old Hallowell Day summer festival held annually on the third Saturday in July is well-known for its amazing fireworks display as well as a cribbage tournament, road race and parade. Other Hallowell traditions include the Mardi Gras Festival (February) and Whatever Festival (June).

Belgrade Lakes Region:

10 miles north of Augusta, is peaceful, picturesque, and welcoming - Central Maine's premier lake area for recreation, relaxation, and wholesome family fun. Famous for its sparkling scenic streams and chain of seven lakes, its panoramic views of fields, hills and woodlands, its inviting towns and villages, and its activities for all ages. Whether a destination for activities and action or a retreat for peace and tranquility, the Belgrade Lakes Region is truly where memories last a lifetime!

Boothbay Harbor Region: (About 45min.-1hr. away)

Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor are quintessential New England maritime villages, popular during the summer. Each year the Windjammer Days festival in June and Fisherman's Festival in April celebrate the region's rich maritime heritage. You won't want to miss experiencing the rocky coast along the harbor and Boothbay Harbor boasts the largest fleet of excursion boats in Maine for viewing lighthouses, islands, seals, whales, puffins and many charter boats for deep-sea fishing.

Both Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor is home to an abundance of antique shops, boutiques, art galleries and gift shops, and walking is a true pleasure, especially if you cross the harbor on the footbridge.

The Boothbay region has numerous recreation and leisure activities.

Portland: (About 1 hr. away)

Portland, located on Casco Bay, is Maine’s largest city as well as its creative hub. Many craftspeople, artists, and other creative types have chosen to live and work here, positioning the city as one of the most fashionable locations in the Northeast. Portland’s Old Port, constructed in the 1800s, has been converted into a first-class shopping and dining district. However, the original Federal-style architecture of the area has been impeccably maintained.

In addition to its commercial shipping traffic, the city’s “new” port is also the departure point for the ferry to the Casco Bay’s Calendar Islands. There are lots of things to do in culturally-diverse Portland, from hot air ballooning to deep-sea fishing. For food lovers, Portland has an abundance of restaurants and cafes. In addition to performances by local theater and dance companies, the city has its own symphony orchestra and opera company. It is also a great spot to catch top rock and jazz acts!
