About Mary Browning
Please note that this VRBO map function does not accurately reflect the location of our beach house. Our house is directly on the beach with no house or street in front of it. Please see our listing photos for an accurate view of the lake and the beach from our deck. Please contact us for the home's address so you can look up the house on Google Earth, which is more accurate. And now, little bit about us: When we moved back to Michigan from Atlanta in 1998, we got the 'cottage bug' and we couldn't shake it. We looked around at various cottages on various bodies of water and realized we were addicted to big waves, big sunsets, big sandy beaches and big skies. Nothing else gave us the feeling that Lake Michigan did! When we found our cottage, we jumped at it. It needed lots of work and we ended up building on to give us more space, but it was a fabulous cottage on a fabulous beach and we've never looked back. The only thing we regret is how far away we are now (we live in Seattle) - and that we can't use our place ourselves except for the rare exception. But we know it continues to welcome beach goers in our absence and that makes us feel better, somehow.
Mary Browning purchased this House in 2000
Why Mary Browning chose Shelby
We bought this cottage as an oasis for our family and it's never failed to live up to that aspiration. It's quiet, peaceful and 'other' where. When we're there, we seem to let go of the 'stuff' that's on our minds at home, and I suppose that's the best thing about the place. Getting away from everything usual, going somewhere apart from the ordinary.
What makes this House unique
This house is comfortable and done up. It's not rustic, not dusty, not basic. It's a real house with real furniture, and that makes it so nice to stay at - even us! We know that you'll agree that it's nicer to stay at a house that's not rickety and spider-webby!

We had such a relaxing stay. The views are beautiful! It was perfect for my family of six. The home is very cozy and has almost everything you need. Mary was easy to reach for the few questions we had. We wish we could have accessed the beach from the house but due to erosion that was not available. She did give us the option to cancel.
Weekend retreat at the beach house
Myself and 6 friends had an amazing stay! The property was absolutely beautiful and so relaxing! First, the home has such a warm charm and was extremely spacious for 7 of us. The home had everything we needed and more to enjoy our stay and Mary notified me of things we may need to bring so that we were prepared. She provided me with an extremely detailed welcome letter that answered every question in advance. There was plenty of sleeping room and even though we didn't have kids with us, we all agreed it was a perfect stay for our families and littles! Our favorite part by far was the deck area!!! Oh my word was it amazing. The hot tub and sunsets were so relaxing. We didn't use the outside deck fireplace but it was inviting to just sit and listen to the waves crashing. The walk to the beach access was so close and convenient. Due to the beach erosion, the access from the deck was prohibited, but Mary notified us in advance. We were able to enjoy the water one of our days and took a short walk. Thank you Mary for the wonderful accomodations and for the great memories at your beautiful beach house.
Much smaller than the pictures portrayed but still very nice.
Nice, comfortable home
This is a lovely, affordable, well-equipped lakefront home. All six of us resided comfortably, with plenty of living and sleeping space and three bathrooms. In spite of limited access to the lakeshore due to beach erosion, the lake views were stunning. Caution: two of our group had trouble climbing the rather steep stairways inside the house, but we are all in our 70s. For the able bodied, it wouldn’t be an issue.
Nice country getaway
It was nice of Mary to alert us in advance and give a chance to cancel due to the high waters of Lake Michigan this summer. The added convenience of direct beach access would have been amazing, but can't help nature.
The house was cute and outside deck was nice for gathering with a group. The space was good and the back room was perfect for the kids to hang out and sleep.
I didn't realize there was no A/C (my bad, I didn't realize that was an amenity until I saw it on other listings close to the date of our stay) and we were lucky it was cooler weather the week we were there. The lake breeze does help with temperature but not much with humidity if you get a really hot/humid day or two.
Mary was responsive when we had questions and made the stay very nice.
