Kohala Estates house description
Our Hawaii home is called Kailani, in Hawaiian Kai Means Ocean and Lani means heavenly. We named our home because of the fabulous sweeping views of the ocean from most of the rooms and the 1200 square feet lanai facing the ocean. We are lucky to have breathtaking sunsets all year round, it rarely rains on the gold coast and with grounds of over an acre the house is both private and quiet. The 1.2 acres of land on which the house sits gives you real privacy and an experience of actually living in Hawaii that cannot be experienced in the resort rentals.
Our home is a spacious four bedroom house with a fully equipped kitchen, dishwasher, laundry room, two master suites, and a large third guest bathroom. The house layout also is perfect for two couples, with the master suites being at either end of the house. The house is conveniently located in Kohala Estates three miles north of the small harbor town of Kawaihae and less than 35 miles north of Kona airport on the west coast of Big Island, a very easy drive north. The house is situated around 800 feet above sea level and benefits from onshore and offshore breezes that keep the house at perfect temperature range all year round; on average the sun shines 320 days a year. The breezes naturally cool the house but there are ceiling fans in all bedrooms and living areas to ensure your comfort.
This area is rightly called the gold coast, just a few minutes drive south are some of Big Island’s prestige hotels with beautiful beaches and facilities; all beaches in Hawaii are accessible to the public. We are approximately 10 minutes north of Hapuna Beach, one of Hawaii’s finest beaches. This area is a perfect base for your holiday with beautiful tropical beaches, water skiing, windsurfing, snorkeling, diving and kayaking all within an easy drive. There are a number of world class golf courses close by and this area is prime Humpback Whale watching territory between December and April. From the grounds you can see observatories on nearby Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano. Mauna Kea is the highest point in the Pacific Basin, and the highest island-mountain in the world; the lower slopes of Mauna Kea are popular for hunting, hiking, sightseeing and bird watching.
Kailani has been extensively refurbished and upgraded over the last year. The house is decorated in colors of the ocean and we hope you will enjoy the contemporary beach house style. The living room, separate dining area and kitchen all have direct wide ocean views, there is a full size well equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, the open plan kitchen has a breakfast bar that will easily accommodate four people. The living area has a flat screen TV if you can take your eyes off the ocean view; there is also cable TV and a small library of DVDs and Wi-Fi. There are a number of Big Island guidebooks and cookery books if you need inspiration to try out some of the superb local food-or just put some fresh caught fish on the barbeque. A large 1200 square foot lanai runs along the back of the house facing the ocean so there is plenty of space for eating, entertaining, relaxing and stargazing.
There are two master bedroom suites, both rooms have slider patio windows and private patio access and when you open your eyes each morning from your bed you have a wonderful view of the ocean and palm trees. The larger master bedroom has a king size bed with padded mattress, a master bathroom with a spa bath, a large separate shower and a large walk-in closet. There is also a TV and DVD. The second master suite has a padded top queen bed, a bathroom with a large shower with an ocean view. The third bedroom has a partial ocean view, palm trees and open countryside looking towards the tip of Haleakela on Maui. The bedroom has two twin beds, which can be made into a king bed, so the room will be perfect for either a couple or for children. The third large bedroom is next door to the large family bathroom with a large walk-in shower. We also have a newly added fourth bedroom so the home sleeps 8 very comfortably. Just like a hotel all the bathrooms are equipped with hairdryers.
There is a well equipped separate laundry room with a new Maytag front loading washing machine and a dryer. Hawaii has the highest cost of electricity in the US and high water costs so if you visit our home you will see we have made every effort to keep our energy and water usage as efficient as possible.
Unlike many rentals the home has supplies of soap, toothpaste, dishwasher tablets, cleaners and toilet tissue as we want you to enjoy our Hawaiian home without having to shop as soon as you get here. We hope you will consider this your home -you are very welcome to use cooler chests, picnic backpacks, cooler bags, beach towels, beach chairs, beach mats etc stored in the entrance cupboard. There are also shopping bags you can use to avoid using plastic shopping bags.
The house is non smoking, in common with most Hawaiian homes this is a shoe free zone so bring your flip flops, or slippers as they are called In Hawaii! We hope you find our home a clean and relaxing environment and that you will love Hawaii as much as we do. We are happy to share our local knowledge if you need help finding things, we are happy to recommend where to shop, eat, find farmer’s markets, where to sail or dance under the stars………or just stay at your Hawaiian home and enjoy another spectacular sunset.
Mahalo (thanks) for taking the time to read this description, a hui hou (see you soon)

The road north to Hawi (Kamuela Highway) is also a great place to pull over and watch the whales. Roughly 6,000 to 8,000 humpback whales visit Hawaii each year and current studies may increase those estimates- there may never have been a better time to come and whale watch in Hawaii....moreless

This is our second stay at this property and this time, although the weather was more unpredictable than last Autumn, we were equally impressed. There is a lot of room to blow off steam here. We felt as if we each had a separate wing and yet the house is comfy and not impersonal. Most of the time we spent outdoors; there are loungers as well as dining table and chairs and a bar b-que so you can enjoy the awesome vistas both day and night. It's a great location for star-gazing. The North Kohala coast tends to have hot and breezy weather and the beaches are easy to get to from here. Also, we both love the 'down home' feel of Waimea town/Kamuela and you can eat there without breaking the bank. Hawi is a lovely town too and Hilo is not such a long drive from here. So if you're looking for a mixture of r & r and exploring I would consider this is an ideal base. The service we received from the property manager both times was thoroughly professional. The house is spotless and we have no complaints at all. I would not hesitate to recommend the property to anyone.

Beyond the Dream!
Beyond the Dream!
I am a Japanese tourist who stayed this house for five nights during the year-end and New Year holidays with my family and my sister’s family, including two kids. This is my 5th experience to stay at a rental house on the Big Island. I have been satisfied with all of these housings. However, this housing is exceptional and I highly recommend you to stay there. Upon arrival, we were so surprised at clean and luxury rooms. They were really well maintained and furnished with luxury and good taste. In particular, we love the Hawaiian guilt at the living room. The dining room, living room and the patio are all uninterrupted and cozy space. From the space, we enjoyed watching sunset in the evening, and at night gazing the stars such as Southern Cross over the Mauna Loa, which are invisible from our country. At the last moment, we had big problem… Nobody wanted to leave this house. This is fantastic memory for us. The owner responded to any question from me in a sincere attitude. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the owner for providing an opportunity to spend quality time with my family.

This was our second visit to the Island of Hawaii this year and would highly recommend this home for the following reasons: - Location: The home is minutes away from some of the best beaches on the Kohala coast (Mauna Kea & Hapuna) and is 30 to 40 min from the airport, and Costco. Other destinations such a the farmer's markets in Waimea & Hawi, Pu'u O Valley & Mauna Kea are all easy drives. Most importantly for us Da fish House is right around the corner (look them up on Yelp for more info) This is a great local fishmonger where you can pick up some of the freshest fish that you are likely ever to eat. - The House: The home itself is very nice. It has 3 large bedrooms plus one additional room that can also be used as a bedroom without any interference in day to day living. The kitchen and living room are spacious and can easily accommodate a group of 6 - 8 adults, we were a group of 6. Outside there is a large lanai with a dining table and chairs to relax on while watching the sunset over the ocean. The kitchen is well equipped with mot everything that you will need for cooking. - Overall experience: Our overall experience on our vacation was terrific and this home was an important part of this. There were only two things that I can mention which were less than perfect: 1- I don't believe that the owner has been renting the home for too long and was not well setup for Visa processing. There was a delay between the time of making my reservation and actually having the deposit charged to my credit card which made me a bit nervous. Everything worked out fine in the end. 2- Other homes that we have rented in the past came equipped with boogie boards, snorkels, fins and other beach/snorkeling gear. This home did not have all this type of gear, there was of course the basics including beach towels, chairs and an umbrella. I would highly recommend saying in this home.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful house with us! We stayed there for 5 days and it was great! Wonderful view, especially from the master bedroom…wake up looking out to blue water and palm trees! Beautifully decorated, VERY clean, spacious and comfortable. Layout of the house is perfect for a family. And perfect for two couples, as each end of the house has a bedroom with en suite bath. Nicely appointed, it had absolutely everything we needed. Patio is very large with different areas to sit so you can be in or out of the sun at all times. We BBQ'd dinner every night, really enjoyed the large patio area. Although it is located in a (very) small community, we found it to be very quiet and private. Loved the flowers and trees surrounding the house too. We will definately be back!

My best friend, my sister and I lucked upon this beautiful home when our prior arrangements fell apart. We could not have been more fortunate. A spacious, contemporary home with three airy bedrooms and three luxurious bathrooms. An up-to-date kitchen with every conceivable convenience made it super easy to cook in and eat on the patio with amazing sunset views. Close to beaches, and far away enough to have elbow room. Would definitely recommend staying here and will likely come again.

My husband and I live on the island and rented this lovely home as a getaway to celebrate my birthday. It was perfect...nicely decorated home (beautiful blue colors) with all the conveniences, a comfortable king size bed ( not too hard and not too soft) with an expansive ocean view, jacuzzi bathtub, close access to the beaches and ocean, star studded nights and even dish washing and laundry soap, We felt welcomed by the owner ( who was not there of course) as friends/family guests, not just renters.

This is a charming house, super clean and furnished with everything one could need. The kitchen has everything for even a discerning cook, and the towels, beach chairs, etc. are also provided. The views, especially at sunset, are wonderful -- and the location very quiet and peaceful. Good snorkeling is just down the road. And excellent selections of groceries are within an easy drive. Although we spent most time outside, the WiFi and cable TV are very convenient. Truly, this house had everything we could have wanted, and more than expected. A find for any vacation.

* Location: Away from people and stores-can be good or bad depending on what you want; * Reservation: Easy process, you send check for rent, cleaning, deposit & they send you instruction; * House: Clean, spacious, well furnished, well stocked; * Management: easy to contact, friendly, lives around the property; * Access to Other Areas: Easy access to Waimea (20 min), about 1hr to Kona, abt 2.5 hrs. to Hilo; * View: You have nice ocean view from this hill-although it's not too close; * Bugs: this is tropical island, there are bugs and geckos. Found tiny tiny crawling insects around all the sinks in the house, and white headboard in the bedroom which I had to kill daily and two bug bugs which my husband had to chase under the bed. We were told it was due to the failure of previous renters to keep the doors closed. I have no comment on that.; * Bed: It was so soft that it had absolutely no support. They offered to come and open the doors to other bedroom to try the beds but told me they were all same so I didn't bother. Slept on the sofa which was firmer than the mattress. * Water: you will have no hot water unexpectedly, with no reason. Had 2 cold showers and they again offered to come and turn on the back up generator or something.; * What you are renting: I thought we were renting a house (whole house), but since there were only two of us, they only had one bedroom opened. I am not sure if they collected less cleaning fee for that or not.; *Birds: There are lot of birds around the house. I hope you love birds and can sleep through anything because those birds are loud and they start exactly at 6:28am. If you are like me, a sensitive sleeper who wanted to get some sleep on vacation, try elsewhere. I hardly slept in this house between the mattress issue and the birds.; * Beach Outing Needs: They have beach towels, beach chairs (2), bags, ice box, etc. It was really convenient for all day outing.; ** Must Try: Go for breakfast in Waimea - Hawaiian Style Cafe & Waimea Farmer's Market have great food, veggies, fruits, flowers, and people! Night Manta Ray Snorkle/Dive - Big Island Divers (Kona), it is an unforgettable experience you must put on your bucket list. Fish Market (down the hill from house), cheap & freshest fish you can buy and BBQ at home, yum! Hilo Bay Cafe (Hilo), the best food I had on Big Island. There are always locals hanging out at the dock/port down the hill from house. Watched sunset with the locals-they were singing with ukelele!

The perfect place
The perfect place
For us this was the perfect place. We did not want to stay at busy resorts or condos, nor at expensive homes on the beach. The ranch style house is in a residential neighborhood, quiet, immensely relaxing environment, spectacular patio and very well located for the North Kohala coast. Set on a sloping hill about 1.2 miles from the shore line you have a spectacular unencumbered view of the ocean. With our binoculars we watched the whales frolicking in the water, awesome. The house has everything and more, fully equipped kitchen, wi-fi, TV, stereo, bedrooms look out over the ocean as well. The service from the local manager was excellent, but we had no need for it, because this was the "perfect place"
