About Susan Reider

Rob and Susan found their forever home in Camden in 2014, after searching for the perfect property for several years. Now retired, they owned a small consulting firm in Houston, Texas that helped international oil and gas companies develop sustainable community investments near their operations all over the world. They are avid art collectors and some of their folk art collection, maps and photography is displayed in the carriage house, along with some of their antique furniture. Susan is also a horse person, and this theme comes across in some of the art as well.

Why Susan Reider chose Camden

This property is in-town living at its finest. About one-half acre in size, the property provides ample room to garden, relax, and watch the grandchildren play! While passing through Camden some years ago, Rob and Susan were both immediately struck by the beauty of the area and the friendliness of the community. They began to vacation in Camden, and quickly determined that it was their ideal retirement destination. Camden is unique in that it is a very small town, but has 12-month recreational activities and also an active intellectual community, demonstrated by the annual Camden Conference, the Camden International Film Festival, a very active Philosophical Society, and 97% community library membership! Casual conversations with strangers often lead to fascinating conversations about current events, ideas or nature.

What makes this apartment unique

Visitors will find the carriage house to be very quiet and private, but so close to everything Camden has to offer. It's also furnished with interesting art, carpets and furniture so that those with similar tastes will be motivated to consult the collection of art books on the shelf to learn more! We've also tried to supply the kitchen with everything needed by guests ranging from a gourmet cook to someone who merely wants a coffeemaker.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My husband and I had a spectacular two month stay in this carriage house apartment. The space is spacious yet cozy and provides everything a couple would need for a short or long term stay. The kitchen is fully equipped to cook anything...nothing was overlooked. There is a brand new 5 burner gas grill for the apartment and a picnic table in the beautiful backyard. The interior is full of character and showcases the owner's many years in South America and Africa. The bed is very comfortable. The whole space is light, bright and charming. The apartment is located just a 4 minute walk to the Mount Battie trail head that leads to a stunning summit overlooking the harbor, downtown and surrounding landscape. It is also less than a 5 minute walk (0.2 mile) to the main street of Camden. Walkability and proximity to everything makes this location the best in town! Nice neighborhood with friendly neighbors. Great running at Beauchamp Point. A run round trip is 5-7 miles (depending on the route) from the apartment. The nearest grocery store is downtown (French & Brawn) or for a chain-store there is a Hannaford’s 1.3 miles away. Check out the local library for excellent guest speakers and workshops (yes, tourist are welcome). Camden is a premier town with plenty of things to do. The owners live in the front house part-time. When they are not there, that house also rents on Airbnb. But, consider yourselves lucky if they are there. They are some of the most interesting, thoughtful, sincere, hardworking and just plain terrific people you will ever meet! They are constantly thinking of ways to improve their properties for their guests. They care very much about their guest’s experiences, but yet, they do not hover or invade your privacy. They have a very professional manager, Kate, who handles the bookings and things when they are away. I HIGHLY recommend this property!! From the place itself, to the neighborhood, to the town, to the owners and manager - this place is our absolute favorite! We are, without a doubt, coming back for an even longer stay.

Wonderful location

Thank you for a lovely week in Camden. The location is ideal for walking to everything in town and the backyard provided a shady retreat in the afternoon.

We arrived to find fresh flowers and a welcoming gift that will be a sweet memento of our visit.

The Carriage House has everything for an extended stay including a well-equipped kitchen and very convenient washer/dryer.

Susan and Rob are gracious hosts and we hope to return next summer!

Fabulous Stay!!

  • 5 of 5

Getting to know Camden and all it has to offer was done in the best possible way while staying in this wonderful, cosy studio apartment, situated a few minutes walk from the town center!! The hosts were so very gracious and the carriage-house was equipped with everything you could possibly need in a space perfect for a couple seeking privacy and a relaxed getaway.

The accommodations were more than just beautiful and comfortable. They had been carefully selected to reflect the well traveled lives of the owners, with artistic and cultural history behind each rug, table and piece of art. A truly unique and memorable stay!! Thanks Susan and Rob, we will be returning soon!!

Absolutely Perfect!!!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent two wonderful weeks here. We found the place to be immaculate and equipped with everything one could ask for. The unit is beautifully furnished and decorated. The kitchen is so well equipped that we were able to enjoy many meals here. We both found the bed to be very comfortable and slept really well after days of hiking and exploring the area. When we arrived, we were greeted with flowers and a welcoming gift. The owners, Susan and Rob, could not have been more genuinely friendly and helpful (with suggestions, maps, guide books). I would love to come back again and very highly recommend it. What a treat!!! Thanks Susan and Rob.

Peace and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

What a delightful week we spent in the second floor of the carriage house in Camden! It is the building to the right in the photo. The proprietors made us feel just like we were at home and everything was just wonderful... and quiet! Camden proved to be the perfect place to park for day trips all along the Maine coast.

The carriage house was spacious, charming and clean. Location walking distance to harbor, hiking trails, restaurants and shops. Driving to more coastal points and historic towns a snap. Loved the beauty and welcoming atmosphere of Maine!

Camden is the "jewel of MidCoast Maine." Famous for its beautiful harbor, it's the home of the Windjammers, large sailing vessels that berth here in the summer and in the U.S. Virgin Islands in the winter. It's also at the foot of Camden Hills State Park, which offers unique views of the coast from the highest elevations in Maine, other than Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, visible on clear days across the bay. From Camden easy day trips include: the ferry from Port Clyde to Monhegan Island, as well as other ferries to Islesboro, Northhaven and Vinalhaven Islands; Acadia National Park; the Olsen House, made famous by Andrew Wyeth; the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland; the Common Ground Fair; the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine; and quaint lobstering villages like Stonington, Winter Harbor, Port Clyde, Friendship and Tenants Harbor. Inland activities include fresh water fishing, kayaking and canoeing, hiking and antiquing.
