For 2017 season ~ Two new wicker chairs and table have been added to front porch, new outdoor lobster cooker, new grill purchased 2016, TV with Roku and netflix added to the queen bedroom, new set of cordless phones spread throughout the house. We properly maintain or home! 10/2012 She's getting a major facelift this Fall. We're having the roof done with standing seam metal in a burnished slate color. 4/2012 We've just completed our latest, and biggest landscaping project. We've put in 100 ft of raised beds (berms really) & filled them w/a variety of plantings. It's really creating a sweet back yard oasis. 11/11 Pete has put down new ceramic floor tile in the sun room. 4/11 Put in a Jotul gas fireplace & a flat screen TV in the living room. 5/11 Placed a new Char-Broil infrared grill & 2 new cushioned wrought iron chaise lounges on the patio. 11/15 The kitchen is ALL new - paint, appliances, lighting, butcher block island, cabinets, hardwood floors - which are throughout the house. The 1 full & 2 - 1/2 baths have received new paint, granite or corian counters & cabinetry. All 3 bedrooms, the living & dining rooms, have been renovated w/new paint or wallpaper & trim. Very nice updates while retaining the charm of a 100 year old Maine Captains house. 5/10 The laundry room w/spanking new front loading washer/dryer is done. 6/2010 Finally we're on to landscaping. We've added an arbor entrance w/honeysuckles, climbing hydrangea, ornamental grasses, etc, & a 12x18 slate & river rock patio off of the sun room, all overlooking the backyard, which is also where the dog run is set up. The property is surrounded by old growth pines, Norway spruce, fir trees, wild rose bushes & unique ledges, that we're enhancing w/new gardens. All beds have new linens, quilts, allergen mattress pads, pillows & headboards. Book a private boat charter w/us - you can walk to where we'll pick you up from - for a lighthouse tour, dinner cruise, seal & birdwatching, clamming, Island picnic, whatever your heart desires, on our 37' converted lobster yacht w/full on board facilities. You're not here yet? We'll leave the brand new motion sensor lights on for you!
Welcome! We know that you'll enjoy this property as much as we do - finding fun and happy surprises throughout. The property is situated to take in all of the harbor happenings of both working & pleasure craft, but removed enough to be relaxing & entertaining. Beyond the immediate harbor view is Penobscot Bay, both Barred Island & Crockett Cove Nature Preserves(both w/great hiking trails), & the beautiful Camden Hills. There is a great pocket beach, directly across the road, that our neighbors have graciously given permission for our rental guest to share. Our covered front porch w/3 cushioned wicker rockers, & small dining area will draw you out for Burnt Cove's famous sunsets we're so fortunate to have a birds eye view of.
You'll enter through the Sun room, which will quickly become a favorite spot. It sports a bistro table set & 2 wicker chairs.Next is the completely renovated kitchen w/new hardwood flooring, lots of new cherry cabinets & all new appliances. You'll find the kitchen to be fully stocked for all of your cooking & baking needs. Off the kitchen is the dining room with oak furnishings, including seating for 8, a buffet & bar. This room also serves as a great spot to check your email, although internet access is possible throughout the house with our Wi-Fi connection. The living room is next, with it's over sized picture window,(& binoculars) taking in all of the harbor happenings of a working waterfront. It is outfitted w/ comfortable leather furniture & a fully equipped entertainment system (DVD/5 CD changer/I-pod Dock/surround sound)- We also have board games, puzzles, & books from local authors on hand. Next is the hall which does double duty as an office/writing area & also looks out to the beach & harbor - our tabletop telescope has found its home there. Rounding off the down stairs is a combination 1/2 bath (flush & sink) & all new laundry room, w/stackable washer/dryer set, iron/ironing board, etc. There is also a direct entry, one car garage.
On the second floor you'll find the full bath with a tub/ shower combo. The large backyard awaits w/a gas grill, picnic table, 2 great chaise lounges (on wheels), a water view, & a run set up for the dog. The equally large front yard looks out over the cove and the beach. Our home is a great spot to reconnect with your own family & a wonderful location from which to explore all that Stonington & the islands beyond have to offer. Kayaks can be affordably rented here on the island & the pocket beach makes for a perfect launching spot to explore the nature preserves & other islands - or you can take either a class or guided tour. We're less than 2 miles to downtown Stonington. We keep a very helpful directory of menus from area restaurants, island highlights and upcoming events you may be interested in. From past experience, we've found renting from Saturday to Saturday works best, so we'll follow suit with this home.

Sue and Pete Buxton purchased this House in 2009
Why Sue and Pete Buxton chose Stonington
This property abuts a treasured family cottage located on land that has been in the Buxton family for close to a century. When presented with the rare opportunity to purchase this home in the sought - after Burnt Cove area last year, it felt like the right thing for us and for our children. We are fortunate to have a spot that we feel so connected to, which will continue to be in the family for many years to come. We're excited to share this special home with you and your family.
What makes this House unique
You'll find many advantages to staying at the house at Fifield Point. The home is spacious and well appointed. The beach across the road will provide hours of enjoyment, or if you prefer, there is 'Sand Beach' near by also. Our boat trips depart from just across the road. The local market, pharmacy and gas station are within walking distance. We are also close to both Crockett cove and Barred Island Nature Preserves and hiking trails. The cove in front of the home is one of the most scenic around, you'll witness an array of both working and pleasure boats, birds (eagles, loons, ducks, etc), spectacular sunsets and an ever-changing scenery.

We had a great time at the Buxton's house on Burnt Cove. It was an ideal location to enjoy all that Stonington/Deer Isle has to offer. The house itself was comfortable and well-equipped. The owners were available and helpful (Although we didn't really need anything!); information about the house and the area was provided upon our arrival.
The view of Burnt Cove from the house front porch, where we could watch the daily activity of the lobsterman and enjoy sunsets most evenings made for a memorable stay. The fog rolling in to Burnt Cove from Penobscot Bay late in the afternoon was a magical sight!!
We would recommend this property and felt it was as described in the listing as well as a real value.
Wonderful Host & Amazing House
My husband and I, who live in Maine near Brunswick, decided we really needed a vacation. We wanted to stay near the water, somewhere quiet before tourist season picked up. A week before our vacation in Eastport the home we had rented fell through due to snow (they couldn't open it up). We found this place and kindly asked if they would be willing to accommodate us and our two dogs last minute.
We were met with such graciousness, kindness and hospitality by the owners. Something we, as fellow Mainer's super appreciated. They completely understood and happily opened their home. The house was perfect and we loved our time on the Island. A few mornings I went for a run and then crossed the street, sat on the rocks, and soaked my feet in freezing cold ocean water. The dogs went swimming a few times and were in heaven (we made sure to towel dry them super well and leave them on the glassed in porch to fully dry though before letting them into the house). It was perfect. The neighbors we talked with were incredible - as are most Mainer's.
Even off season there was plenty to do. Most of the touristy places were closed, but that was the point of us getting away. We live close enough to tourist season in another part of the state. We had no interest in it.
My husband and I absolutely dream of going back to this property, and Stonington in general. The owners stocked the house with the most delicious coffee I've ever had from 44 North as a welcome gift (a year later and I actually buy their coffee and have it shipped home as a treat now and again).
I cannot say enough about how lovely this property is. It's comfortable, cozy, calm, all amenities are provided, and the owners are so wonderful (as are the people of Stonington and the surrounding towns). We cooked often on the small wood cook stove in the kitchen (we use wood exclusively for heat in our own home, so we knew how to make and manage a fire safely). That said, the kitchen is up to date and stocked incredibly well. The house is so comfortable and comforting. A hot coffee on the porch in the morning overlooking the ocean, and a comfortable bed at night was just what I needed.
We love Maine and everything about it. Stonington, this home, and the awesome owners only increased this. We can't wait to go back.
Thanks so much for the wonderfully thoughtful review folks! We will miss you this season ~ but will look forward to meeting your newest little member of the family in your next visit with us! We just love making new friends through our little rental business. Best to you all and see you in the near future.

Amazing views and Great Location!
This was our first family trip to Deer Isle and we had the great fortune of finding this rental. The house is lovely, the kitchen well equipped, and the views from the porch are amazing. The location is perfect for relaxing; not too close to town but not far away either. There are also a number of nature preserves nearby for wonderful hiking. Could not ask for a more thoughtful family to rent from, a better house to rent or a better location.
It's in the details
The details are all there! We managed our vacation home in the mountains of Colorado in a manner that we felt we were sharing - sharing our home with friends. We felt that generous spirit from the Buxton's Stonington house. All the details are right. If you like to cook - its all there. but of course it is not just about the details it's about location. Perfect. Quiet - great inlet views. A real lobster village i not some touristy faux deal. Real people. And just far enough off the beaten path to not feel a a part of the summer swarms that inundate more "popular" towns. Yet there is the island's best grocery store a couple minutes way and it is a quick drive to town when the need for restaurants and other services arise. The town of Stonington is classic and the people are genuine. So we can heartily recommend this house! Thanks for sharing!
Fall trip to Stonington
I am a first time user of VRBO or any private home as a vacation rental for that matter and found the experience to be stress free and very rewarding. As another user stated, Pete and Sue's home is like staying at a friends house. It is a very cozy house with a homey feeling that only comes from owners that care! The house has a great view of the cove which would come alive each morning with lobster fisherman going out for a days work. In the distance you could here the pleasing sound from the Mark Island Lighthouse which only added to the romanticism
Meeting the owners for a sunset cruise on the Susan Marie was a highlight of the trip as they are very knowledgeable about the island and are willing to answer questions or explain things to their guests. The owners recommended things to do, places to eat, and general island information. I highly recommend hiking the barred island and settlement quarry trails which showcase some of the natural beauty. I also recommend eating at the Whales Rib Tavern which served us an excellent meal on par with any restaurant in Chicago. Also, do not miss an opportunity to get local fresh lobster to bring back for a lunch or dinner at the house (Carters seafood is what we choose). Don't forget to pickup some local roasted beans from 44 NORTH to take home with you as we did.
On our last day, the owners invited us over to their barn (boat shop) so we could see Pete's current project, restoration of a hundred year old wooden boat, again answering any question we had and explaining life on the island and how they came to this point in time. Pete and Sue are about the nicest people you could meet and I really can't say enough good things about them and their home. Finally, one of the main reason I initially chose their property was because they're DOG FRIENDLY and Seamus, my soft coated wheaten terrier, goes everywhere and I really appreciate anyone who recognizes that the dog is part of the family too.
I hgihly recommend a stay here...you won't regret a thing!!!
Artist's dream vacation
Sue and Pete are such nice and friendly people, and this is reflected in this charming and very comfortable home. It didn't feel like a rental, but more like a visit to a friend 's home. Every last detail has been considered to make your stay delightful, from the very well equipped kitchen with new appliances to really comfortable beds and new bathrooms. While the house has the feeling of an old Maine captain's house, it still has all the modern amenities. It was also immaculately clean. But all of this was not my favorite thing about this house. I am an artist and I loved having the lovely studio in the back yard. It was completely charming and had a view of beautiful Burnt Cove. I spent many happy hours painting there, and was happy I didn't have to put my oil paints in the house. Also, a word about the back yard which is amazing. A huge granite boulder(about the size of a whale),runs along one side of the yard. A pretty little path meanders along the top and leads to the studio. There is a table on top of the rock and we had a beautiful lunch up there one day. There is so much to like at this property I could go on forever....beautiful sunsets, fascinating harbor with working and pleasure boats, friendly people, grocery store within walking distance, wonderful hikes, the interesting village of Stonington. It was really a perfect two weeks!
The owners offer, at reasonable rates, custom boat charters, on their 37'converted lobster yacht, the 'Susan Marie'. Tour the local waters, explore other islands, see light houses, seals etc. Take a dinner cruise on or to a neighboring island. Groups of up to 6 people can be accommodated. Full on board facilities. A wonderful way to experience the coast. Capt. Pete has navigated these waters all of his life, either as a fishermen, boat builder or explorer and will instantly make you feel at ease.
