About Elise Pettus
I am a writer with two sons living in Brooklyn, NY
Elise Pettus purchased this House in 1981
Why Elise Pettus chose Southwest Harbor
I spent summers in Maine with my family since I was small. My parents bought the house and left it to me. We have used it as our family vacation spot for the last 15 years.
What makes this House unique
Every stay up here has been magical for our family. We love the park-its dramatic mountain and ocean views, love all there is to do, love being on boats, etc. Great place for guests to visit- there is so much to do! Whether its visiting world famous gardens, island hopping, hiking, playing golf--or mini golf--its all here!

The house and its immediate surroundings are a beautiful microcosm of what attracts us to Maine. The house is in the most peaceful part of Southwest Harbor, nestled between a thicket, a small pond behind a row of trees, a boat-making shop, and the harbor itself. The combination gives a sense of vacation peace but also a sense of being part of a working, if sleepy, harbor life. The harbor itself is a stone's throw away from the house, visible from plenty of parts of the house itself, and present in the smells, sights and feel of the place. But the veranda and, especially, the backyard are very pleasant places to sit, read, rest and be. The house itself and also the barn have a worn or fatigued quality, befitting a lived-in vacation home and for us more a source of charm than a drawback. The bedrooms particularly were very tastefully adorned and the beds extremely comfortable, with lots of lovely paintings and prints and literature to warm the house. And the master bedroom on the top floor, with its grand bathroom and grander views, is really stunning. This is a beautiful and unforgettable place of home and wonder, both.
We absolutely loved our stay! Barn is a bit rustic. There were 6 in our group and stayed very comfortably in the cottage.
My family and I enjoyed a week at this beautiful cottage by the sea! Southwest Harbor is breathtakingly beautiful, this charming home was w wonderful place to come back to at the end of a day of biking, hiking and swimming. The yard was large enough to set up games and the large front porch a great place to gather (Mosquitos were our only challenge). Bedrooms large and beds very comfortable, bathrooms have all been updated. The only drawback was the furniture in the living room, dining room. Very worn down and not suitable for 6 ft. Tall men. Also the internet service was not dependable. Other than those issues our memories of this vacation house will be treasured.
Our family, six adults and a six month old shared a wonderful vacation here this past summer. Having visited Southwest Harbor many times I was looking for an old house with a "Maine feel". This home was exactly what I was looking for. The area is beautiful and despite a couple of rainy days all went well. The caretaker graciously loaned us another kayak and that was great. We kept busy and enjoyed showing off one of our favorite vacation destinations, especially to our very outdoorsy son in law from Montana, on his first visit to Maine. We love Southwest Harbor and I'm sure that we will visit many times in the future.
That being said, I feel that there are a few items that should be mentioned regarding the rental for those who are renting there for the first time. As the previous reviewer said, the upstairs bedrooms and the master suite are great...the downstairs furniture is very in need of updating and is uncomfortable. The dated furniture adds to the charm of the home however, guests need a place to sit and relax comfortably. The kitchen is functional and a good gathering place. ( Keep in mind this is an old house.). The barn was a big disappointment to us. No one was interested in sleeping there mostly due to the torn screens and the spiders (ok, it's Maine and it was damp)... one of the paper lamps was hanging in shreds so it just wasn't as appealing as we had hoped for or quite as the pictures had led us to expect. Another note was that there was no TV in the house, even though it is listed on the posting, also no iron or ironing board. (Maybe most people on vacation don't watch TV but it would have been nice to pop in a movie on a rainy day.) Also the proximity to the Hinckley property and construction trucks passing in front of the house at certain times of the day could be a nuisance to some guests...
I write this review only so that future guests are aware of what to expect and by no means to say that we did not have a very nice time. It's a great old home and I can see how the owner cherishes all the family memories made there. However, because we use VRBO so frequently and read the reviews to gather information, I thought it important to add my comments.
Just down the road from the Cranberry island ferry. Take a bike or walk and spend a day enjoying the art, history and delicious food on Little Cranberry!
