About the property

House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Featured as the “International House” on the show Tiny House Hunters, The Carriage House has touched hundreds of people with its charm and amazing energy. It was hand selected by the TV show producers as one of the most unforgettable vacation homes in San Diego. Here is the link to the short advertisement. http://www.fyi.tv/shows/tiny-house-hunting/season-3/episode-6/small-and-modern-in-san-diego

We’ve had tons of great reviews, but the one comment that keeps coming up is how our attention to detail reflects our love for the place. Since the beginning, our goal with The Carriage House has always been to provide a place that is not just your run of the mill, but part of the vacation experience itself, and to utilize a portion of the proceeds to help unwanted horses. We’re going on five years now, and have helped many horses including eight wild mustangs that were taken from their native land. Because of guest like you, those eight horses now roam thousands of acres in Idaho.

Something else we like to provide is, after you confirm your reservation, we send you a hefty welcome packet that contains lots of local advice on restaurants and places to visit.

The Carriage House was originally built in 1913 and still showcases the dark mahogany floors, antique doors, and gorgeous tall wood beam ceilings. It's located in one of the most sought after areas in San Diego, the historic Mission Hills District. Formerly a home for the horse groom's family, The Carriage House, was recently remodeled by a local architect who transformed this gem into a spacious one bedroom/one bath that is now perfect for anyone who appreciates modern comfort and artistic design.

Features include a king sized signature Heavenly Bed with amazing pillows and linens. Custom lighting that was imported from Morocco to perfectly fill the home with ambiance. WIFI is available as well as two Smart TV’s that provide access for you to log into your online movie accounts. Storage is provided in the walk-in closet and there is also an additional sitting room that can be closed off for privacy. The home offers a washer/dryer, central heat/air conditioning, and a kitchen set-up for a chef that includes copper pans, spices, and (of course) a gas stove.

Most guests like to dine outside on the private outdoor patio. It's one of those experiences where soft light, a BBQ grill, and a few glasses are all you need.

THINGS WE LIKE TO DO:

Walk to the local restaurants, only half a mile away. It's a lovely stroll through the neighborhood of 100 year old trees.

Take a five-minute Uber to Old Town for authentic Mexican food and dancing.

Venture just four miles away to the famous downtown Gaslamp district where you will find entertainment, theater, live music, movies, and shopping.

Walk around the corner for morning coffee at the local bakery/coffee shop.

Schedule a massage or take a yoga class just three blocks away.

Throw the beach towels in the car (supplied) and head to the beach about 10 minutes away. We can assure you, at the end of the day you will appreciate coming home to a quiet neighborhood away from the crowds.

About Susanne McCall

We feel so blessed to be the owners of The Carriage House. Originally we set out with a goal of buying a vacation home to create a reliable stream of revenue for horse rescues. We couldn't believe it when we found an actual Carriage House. Most of these homes that used to hold the horse carriage and caretakers family have been torn down. Despite our full time, sometimes hectic jobs, we love meeting guests who stay at The Carriage House and have made lifelong friends. We feel like its not just us giving back to the horses but all of our guests who are part of this team. For those interested, we send letters with follow up stories on all the horses helped through donations of The Carriage House. What could be better than staying in an amazing place and helping rescue animals.

Why Susanne McCall chose San Diego

The Carriage House is influenced by our extensive travel and experience staying in boutique hotels. Being in Mission Hills, the most prominent area of San Diego, was a bonus for us when we found the property. We take walks when we are on vacation and loved the fact that our guests can stroll along under hundred year old trees. For us, the place we stay on vacation is part of the experience therefore no detail can be too small. Artistically, the Carriage House decor is focused on a modern worldly feel so that guests from all over the world will feel comfortable. This property is an important part of our goal in creating a reliable source of revenue for the purpose of saving horses. Your stay in The Carriage House directly benefits the lives of horses by providing hay, shelter, and medications. The fact that this home was originally a Carriage House, which held the carriage and was a living area for the caretakers makes it even more special to us. Our hope is that our guests return home from their vacation with their own Carriage House story to tell.

What makes this house unique

What we love about this place is how centrally located it is. It is literally close to everything. At the same time though, you get to get away from the hustle to your own oasis in a quite neighborhood. Walk to the local shops and have coffee. You'll find great restaurants less than one mile away. Actually our favorite restaurant in San Diego is called the Red Door and is so close you hardly need the car. Looking back, we used to sit at this restaurant and, over a few glasses of wine, discuss how we could start a business to fund horse rescues. I guess this house right around the corner was listening!!!!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Gretchen and I had a wonderful visit to the carriage house. The property is lovely. We hated to leave so much that we lingered as long as possible before our flight. We loved the house, the neighborhood and the city. Your directions were clear and your outline of places to visit and eat helped tremendously. We ate at Juniper & Ivy, The Red Door & Trust for dinners. Breakfast each morning at the Farmers Bottega and 2 afternoons at Balboa park wondering and sustaining ourselves at Prado.

Thank you again. We will be back.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

The house is absolutely beautiful and very clean. It's in a nice area as well. We definitely enjoyed our stay and if we come back without our kids again we would be delighted to stay there. You do have to take an uber pretty much anywhere you go but that was expected. We loved it!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The accommodations were PERFECT! Exceptionally clean and a warm/comfortable atmosphere. We loved how the house was decorated.

Being from Texas we really felt like we were "in California". Lovely stay. I would definitely return and recommend this stay to anyone. WE LOVED IT!

Quality and serenity in an wonderful neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

We just spent four incredible days and had a wonderful experience. Noteworthy items include how beautiful the house and the neighborhood were, as the architecture and gardens were serene. Secondly, after living in Miami, NY and now Texas, the farthest we drove anywhere was 20 minutes! The Carriage house is perfectly located. And finally, we came to San Diego and we did not have an agenda of activities to check off a list. We wanted to arrive at the Carriage House and go from there! We both loved the experience and would highly recommend the carriage house.

Exquisite little jewel

  • 5 of 5

Every item in the Carriage House has been selected with great care care - specifically for comfort & beauty. The garden contributes greatly to the sense of relaxation you feel, immediately upon stepping through the gate. Even the neighborhood is friendly with lots of gardeners and dog-walkers willing to wave and chat. We enjoyed every moment of our stay!

Wonderful romantic getaway

  • 5 of 5

The Carriage House may fit the definition of a 'tiny house' but with high wood and beam ceilings and a great layout it provided plenty of room for two of us celebrating our 39th anniversary in a city we hadn't been back to for 20 years. The cottage itself is located in the gorgeous Mission Hills historic section of San Diego which has million dollar plus restored craftsman, bungalows, and Spanish style homes. It is also near many great restaurants in Mission Hills, Hillcrest and downtown San Diego. The central location was 10-20 minutes by car from Old Town, Little Italy, Balboa Park/San Diego Zoo and the beautiful San Diego Beaches.

The house itself is an early 1900's restored Carriage House whose original purpose was to store horse-drawn carriages and the related tack. The wonderfully quirky decor reflects its historical past and the owners (Susanne and Elizabeth) interest in horse training and rescue. There is a very comfortable king size bed which can be closed off from the sitting area with couch and television by curtains and a small but very functional bathroom with a fixed/hand-held dual shower. The kitchen is fully stocked and has a 4 burner stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher - as well as a gas grill on a small outside deck. The deck and front of the house are fenced off from the street and very private. There is also a separate enclosed brick floored patio area with separate seating and television. The house has cable and wifi which worked well for our entire stay - despite an unexpected San Diego May heavy rainstorm that kept us inside for most of one day. Upon arrival we were greeted by a freshly made bed, soft towels, soap/shampoo, fresh flowers and a bottle of wine!

The Carriage House is a great option for couples seeking to get away for a short (or longer) stay in San Diego. It is definitely on our list of favorite places we have ever stayed, and we hope to get back again soon.
